Hi. I am new here, mother to Mikhail who is just 5 months old. I have been reading the boards for sometime now and have found them so useful and have been relieved to see that the symptoms Mika was experiencing were the same as what other children are experiencing. We have known he has severe silent reflux for sometimie now and have gone through a lundry list of medications and have not found any relief. He is still crying, screaming, or whimpering all of the time, barely eats – it is a struggle to get him to take 15 oz a day, and doesnt sleep well.
After reading this board and the MARCI kids site , we have increased his dosage of prevacid to 22.5 mg/ day as of 2 days ago and it doesnt really seem to have much of an impact yet. I was wondering if there was an issue with how I ws administering it? We use the 15 mg solutabs, which we break in half and dissolve in water and give to him with a syringe 3 x/day. He grazes all day, so it is hard to find a perfect time when he has an empty stomach. Is this the right way to administer? Also, i noticed many of you said to give the Zantac with the preevacid ( 4 hours aprt) but to use both. Am i understanding correctly, or is this just during the transition phase?Lastly, Mikhail is currently on Enfamil Lipil. He was on Nutramigen for several months and was doing fine on it, but we switched at one point becasue we didnt think it was making a difference and we were at our wits end with congestion he was experiencing at the time and thought it would help. It is mich harder to burp him now and he farts alot. I am thinking he may do better back on the nutramigen and tried to switch him back yesterday. Well, turns out he now hates the taste of nutramigen and wouldnt take it all, even when i tried mixing the two. Do you ahve any suggestions on imroving the taste? Do allimentum or neocate taste better?I know this is alot of information, but we are soo desperate at this point. Any thoughts/help you can provide are much appreciated. This is our first child and it has been so hard to have not yet seen him happy for any extended period of time. Thanks,TazJuly 2, 2008 at 4:53 pm #53306hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
the other formulas taste worse I believe- to go back to nutrimigen I would slooowly introduce it to the enfamil bottles- like once ounce nutrimigen and the rest of the bottle enfamil. if this is too much, start w/ half an ounce- just slooowly do it.as for the switch to the higher dose of prevacid(sounds like you’re doing fine w/ administering it), it can take maybe a full week to see it’s affects. as for the zantac, yes, this is mainly for the transition time for starting a PPI, but you can use it whenever you see it’s necessary. there was a time when my son was on both for quite some time. I would figure out the maz dose of zantac (10mgs per kilo) and give this too (4hrs seperate from the prevacid). I would also look into caracream! NEW NEWS IN JUST TODAY!!! yay! https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11191July 2, 2008 at 5:25 pm #53310AnonymousInactiveHi. thanks for the quick response. With the Zantac, did you just do the full dosage once a day?
Also, i dont really understand how the caracream is supposed to be used?July 2, 2008 at 5:39 pm #53312hellbenntKeymastercaracream- this is where you get a prescription for either prilosec or prevacid capsules. then you buy the caracream kits (now called Buffer Babies). you then act like a mad scientist at your kitchen table and follow the instructions (or get your husband to do it, LOL!) for how to mix up the capsules and the mix. then VOILA! you have an easy-to-give liquid that you can give at ANYTIME (don’t have to time around meals) to your screaming baby. whoohoo!!!
the zantac I would give the full dosage split into 2 or 3 doses given throughout the dayJuly 2, 2008 at 6:02 pm #53324AnonymousInactiveThis may be a stupid question, but do you have to have a script for the Caracream? Since we have been on the go so much this summer, its been a PITA to do the Prevacid waiting game. I’m pretty sure I can get a script for the Prevacid capsules from my pedi (just not in the dosage I want). Do you get it from the pharmacy or Marci kids?
July 2, 2008 at 6:06 pm #53326hellbenntKeymasteryou will have to clarify with marci-kids. it’s been done both ways, so not a stupid question! There are NO stupid questions.
when I first started, I got caracream from the U of Missouri via dr philip’s office- there was no marci-kids (actually there was a website http://www.chocobase.com I think it was LOL!)
then, there was zegerid, but you could still get caracream. long story.
at this point you could actually get caracream from the pharmacy.
then it was hard, almost impossible to get caracream.
then, you could get it here & there from marci-kids/U of Missouri/Dr philips.
now you can get it again! HALLELUJAH!
