I have a few more questions. I seem to be bouncing around these forums. I finally got my dd prevacid. The dr prescribed 7.5 mg 2x per day. for my dd who is 14 pounds. Is this a good starting dose? Also, does prevacid cause fussiness? Are there any other side effects to be aware of?
November 5, 2008 at 8:19 pm #58377hellbenntKeymasterok I’ll do a conservative dose calculation, bcse that’s what I can do, off the top of my head…
14lbs = 6.4 kilos‘high’ dose of prevacid, FIVE YEARS AGO, LOL! is 3mgs per kiloso 6.4 x 3 = 19.2mgs a day of prevacidyour dd’s dose is 15mgs a day so my educated GUESS is that there is room to increase!NEXT: what FORM of prevacid? read this: Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1November 5, 2008 at 9:08 pm #58381AnonymousInactiveI would say that it’s a good starting dose but it’s also a very conservative dose – if that makes sense.
I would definitely check out marci-kids.com but also keep in mind that it can take 2wks for the Prevacid to start working.
Be sure to check out Laura’s link – lots of great info!
November 6, 2008 at 12:44 pm #58397AnonymousInactivelooks like these 2 lovely ladies answered the question about the dose just wanted to add: if you have axid, zantac, etc. be sure to continue giving it until prevacid kicks in. just make sure to space it 4 hrs from the prevacid. if you stop giving it, your LO will be super fussy since prevacid takes time to work and it will seem like your LO isn’t on anything at all. you may already know this.
P.S. we also had an adjustment period on prevacid where when we gave it on an empty stomach, landen seemed fussy for a few weeks and even had what appeared to be some cramping. imagine how you feel when taking meds on an empty stomach. it takes getting used to. once it kicked in, and the reflux got under control he was much better.hope this helps some.November 11, 2008 at 1:07 pm #58548AnonymousInactiveHow long does it take for the prevacid to work? I am giving it to DD two hours after a meal. Then I feed her an hour later. She is also getting Zantac twice a day. We are starting day 6. I thought it would have kicked in by now!
November 11, 2008 at 5:13 pm #58562hellbenntKeymaster‘proper’ dose? of prevacid? zantac?
anway, it was day 12 for us. it was THAT obvious…November 11, 2008 at 7:43 pm #58570AnonymousInactivethe prevacid is 7.5 mg two times a day… the zantac is 2 ml twice a day… Why does it take so long for prevacid to work? Anyone know?

November 16, 2008 at 9:01 pm #58757AnonymousInactiveaargh! I wish I would have found this site a week ago! My DD was on Zantac .8ml 2x daily. A new pedi started prevacid 7.5 mg once daily and said to just stop the Zantac. No wonder she’s had sleep issues! I tried to offer cereal 2 days straight and have been paying for it all week. I’m sure it was a combination of NO zantac and the cereal. I was a drug rep for 7 years and I’m really starting to hate doctors.
November 17, 2008 at 5:57 pm #58777AnonymousInactiveWe were taking prevacid and zantac and we were told that my daughter was allergic to dairy. I was breastfeeding so I removed dairy from my diet. I hated our pediatrician so I found someone new and she in turn referred us to a new GI. The GI said my daughter was not allergic to dairy so I could start eating it as soon as I wanted. Additionally she said she did not know why the previous GI was giving us both. Apparently one reduces acid and the other blocks it. She increased our dosage of the prevacid and had us eliminate the zantac. The next morning our daughter woke up and was smiling. It was the first time she wasn’t fussy and crying or screaming since she was born. You may want a second and 3rd opinion.
The lactation specialist at the hospital recommened the new pediatrician to us and we are so pleased with her. My daughter is 18 months now and has outgrown the reflux and colic. She too cried for at least 12 hours per day. Good luck to you – it does get better! -
