And yes we did have a scope and ph study! Both showed mild reflux . The GI dr felt as if it isn’t even worth treatin but like I said did give some carafate to soothe his throat.
March 7, 2012 at 10:08 pm #70044AnonymousInactiveit sounds like they haven’t been checking his ears on a regular basis—he’s right that an ear infection isn’t likely to make a baby scream for 3 months—but he could have had several ear infections that you didn’t know about. they don’t need antibiotics for all ear infections—they discovered alot of them will clear up on their own without antibiotics—but that doesn’t mean they don’t hurt like the dickens! i think the over prescribing of antibiotics for things like ear infections and viral sore throats helped create MRSA—and believe me—it is one nasty infection to have. the edge of my lip is still numb from having it 3 years ago.
your son could have gotten an ear infection some time ago and possibly had fluid in his ears that was just plain uncomfortable—even if it didn’t hurt. remember, the only way they can tell us something is wrong is to cry, or in some cases, like my grandson, scream for hours.also, relux is an uncomfortable sensation, even when it doesn’t hurt. i have really bad reflux from a hiatal hernia—i am sitting here right now with the feeling that there is something stuck in my throat. i really need to have a fundo myself, my surgeon talked to me about it 15 years ago. he told me that as young as i was and as bad as my symptoms were, it was just a matter of time before i was going to have to have surgery. Our ped gi and i had a discussion once about the fact that some doctors think that some babies with reflux that is properly treated, are still fussy because of the funny sensation that they still feel in their chest or throat and so they fusss because it is their only way of lett us know something doesn’t feel “right.”i have had to sleep in my recliner sometimes because my chest hurts from reflux. i’ve also woken up swallowing and almost gasping because i have had stuff come up all the way to the top of my throat while i was asleep—-fortunately that has only happened a few times.March 7, 2012 at 10:12 pm #70045AnonymousInactiveYou could definitely be onto something!!! He has had some good days!! But mostly just Bad, Bad, Bad!!!! Anyways I will let you know how the visit with the ENT goes in the am!
March 8, 2012 at 7:35 am #70046hellbenntKeymasterMarch 8, 2012 at 9:40 am #70047AnonymousInactiveChristine, no my son did not have a ph probe, just an Upper GI. They told me it showed mild to moderate reflux. I guess they were referring to how much stomach contents came back up, not how much acid.
Teia, I’m so happy to hear that your little guy is doing better. Weren’t they checking his ears all these months? Is he still on Nexium?
March 8, 2012 at 3:55 pm #70049AnonymousInactiveNo nexium! They took him off all his reflux meds! ENT dr walked in the room at 1230 and said he needs ear tubes so we went to the office at 2 and he put them in! So I guess we will see what happens now.
March 8, 2012 at 4:20 pm #70050AnonymousInactivedidn’t the guy examine him first? my kids had to be fasting when they had their tubes put in. kind of weird that this guy would walk in the room , not check your son himself, and then put tubes in 1 1/2 hours later.
My twins both got tubes at 11 months, done in a dr.s office, but they still had to be fasting. molly got tubes at 8 months, done at the hospital by and ENT, but she had to go in fasting, too.kevieb2012-03-08 16:23:36
March 8, 2012 at 5:33 pm #70052AnonymousInactiveYes sorry! He said both of his ears looked bad and the left one was full of fluid! He also got a history from me but he put them in right in the office
March 8, 2012 at 5:35 pm #70053AnonymousInactiveJust didn’t give all details….I’m running on very little sleep right now
March 11, 2012 at 2:25 pm #70060AnonymousInactiveSo it seems after my youngest has screamed for the last 3 months of his life…diagnosed with and treated for reflux , it was a lot to do with his ears!!! Just 3 days after getting tubes in his ears, his acres if has decreased probably by 80 percent so hopefully we are fighting an uphill battle now!
March 11, 2012 at 2:49 pm #70061AnonymousInactiveHere’s my question. He still seems to have some feeding issues so I am wondering if he should go back on his prevacid or do u think that will get better???
March 12, 2012 at 3:18 pm #70062AnonymousInactivedoesn’t sound like he really needed the prevacid–i think i’d work with him a litttle while first—he’s still getting used to the idea that his ears aren’t going to hurt when he tries to eat. can’t believe the docs didn’t check his ears before–that’s like one of the first things the docs would check whenever i took my babies in.
the surgeon that did sylvia’s fundo told us that ALL babies have reflux, they just don’t all have acid reflux. he also told us he didn’t think it was a good idea to change the natural ph of their stomach for a long period of time. this is why i have fought taking the meds myself for years–but i’m going to have to give in and take it or else go ahead and get surgery. the doc tried to tell me this 15 years ago bought i didn’t want to do surgery—wish i had done it back then when i was feeling bettter. if i had known i had a hiatal hernia back then, i probably would have gone ahead and gotten the surgery.sounds like you have gotten your little one’s main issues figured out, now it’s just a matter of taking care of the residual after-effects.my 3 girls that got tubes were all different. they also happen to be the 3 kids that have celiac–but i think that is just coincodence. tianna got alot of ear infections—and even got 2 infections after she got her tubes, kassies only got one infection, but the fluid never went away. they got tubes on the same day when they were 11 months old. molly got one ear infection and we went through 5 different antibiotics—-some didn’t work, some she was allergic to–but we had a dickens of a time getting rid of the ear infection. we kept seeing a different doc every time we went in—and several of them would say, “if this doesn’t clear up, she may need tubes.” then, we would bring her back in, it would be a different doc, and he would sy the same thing. (we were waiting for a new doc to come and our ER docs were taking turns keeping the office running) i finally called the office and said if it looked like she was going to need tubes, i’d just as soon go ahead and do it. the doc made the arrangements for us to see the ENT and she got tubes at 8 months old. Just a funny thing, that is not important, but after her surgery, the ENT came out and was talking about having his grand daughter over and he took off his booties and showed us that his toe nails were painted—his grand daughter had insisted—i thought he was a really funny guy to show us that.March 12, 2012 at 9:06 pm #70063AnonymousInactiveI appreciate all your advice!! Well he started screaming fit again today:(! He had a few! I am so depressed. I just want him to be happy. Hopefully he will grow out of this. I just have no idea what to do anymore. He is growing and developing fine. I just wish I knew what to do:(
March 13, 2012 at 1:57 pm #70066hellbenntKeymasterwell, the ‘mildest’ med is zantac. give some of that and see if it helps?
March 20, 2012 at 9:52 pm #70096AnonymousInactiveI had the same problem, I sent my poor husband to the store to get some mylanta and thought he was crazy when he said he coudn’t find it. Then I looked it up on-line and it’s all been recalled due to something about alcohol.
