March 3, 2012 at 2:10 pm #69988AnonymousInactivemedications did not help my daughter. well, when they put her on prevacid after 12 days she finally slept for 4 hours in her bassinet one night. she had carafate, and once or twice i gave it to her in the middle of a feed and it seemed to help her a little.
i was breast feeding her, but she also was given bottles. breastfeeding was sometimes a wrestling match because she was hungry, but obviously it hurt her to eat. she ate enough, but she could not keep enough of it down to gain enough weight. this child spit up all day long. i would read posts where people would say that their child was spitting up 7 times a day–and i’d be thinking, sylvia spits up 7 times an hour.we had to hold her almost 24 hours a day for the first 2 months of her life. i could not even go to the bathroom (i’d set her in the swing) without coming back to her screaming. she was on oxygen for the first month of her life because she kept desating in the hospital–they though her lungs were immature. she was emergency c-section with the cord wrapped around her neck 3 times and had to be resuscitated when they got her out. she was 6 lb 4 oz at birth—and 6 weeks later she was 6 lb 10 oz. i was supposed to be induced a week early because she was going to be my 4th v-bac after 2 c-sections. they did not even get the induction started and they could see she was having trouble—her heart rate kept dropping—so they rushed me into surgery and got her out as quick as they could. they told me she could have been dead the next day–i’m sure glad they had me planned for an early induction.i learned later that when a baby is under stress that their lungs will actually develope faster—and that reflux can cause them to desat.the medications did not help sylvia because her reflux was so severe because she had been born with a hiatal hernia.I’m sure she was in pain and that is why we had to hold her constantly for the first few months. she slept on my chest in the recliner. i really had no idea how bad her reflux was until she had her ph probe and her scope. as far as being in pain, the doctor said that it was all she had ever known.I bought a big waterproof cloth and put it on the carpet in my family room to try and keep it from getting ruined from the massive amounts that she spit up.March 3, 2012 at 2:23 pm #69989AnonymousInactivethe only way that i was able to get any sleep as she got a little older, was to take her in bed with me (i hate children in my bed) i would prop pillows around me so that i would not roll over on her, i would get her latched on, and we would sleep that way. as long as she stayed latched on, she would sleep, i think it was soothing to her esophagus. if she didn’t stay latched on, she would wake up.
i also used a pacifier with her–they help to sooth them also. i’m a big believer in pacifiers–i worked for 3 months to teach my twins to take pacifiers. all my kids gave them up on their own by the time they were a year old. except sammie, because she was a finger sucker instead.it sounds like the medication is working for your son since he only shows mild reflux. the surgeon told us that ALL babies reflux, they just don’t all have acid reflux. unless the biopsies show some unexpected severe reflux inflammation, i don’t think reflux is your son’s problem. a litle mild inflammation on meds would probably be considered normal—i think i told you before that alot of moms on here would still get results of mild inflammation with biopsy reports when their child was medicated. the key word is MILD.we have a set of twin grandbabies, a girl and a boy. they are getting near a year and a half. the little girl is a little angel babie—-and the little boy is a screamer. i have always thought there is something going on with him. he doesn’t just cry–he SCREAMS when we watch him and clings to his mother when she gets him. i don’t know what he is like at home for her. we have watched him for several hours at a time he he has screamed almost the entire time. he is starting to get better, and sammie is really good with him–she is the family babysitter.March 3, 2012 at 3:44 pm #69990AnonymousInactiveJust curious how is your daughtr doing now?
March 3, 2012 at 6:59 pm #69992AnonymousInactivemy daughter is doing great. when her baby teeth came in–she cut the first one 3 days after her fundo—she had enamel hypolasia. when she was 3 she had to be put under and have about 12 teeth worked on–she ended up with 8 or 9 stainless steel crowns. i thought it was my fault because i had given her pediasure in a bottle to get weight on her so we could avoid having to have a g-tube put in.
the dentist told me that her teeth looked clean, but that she had enamel hypoplasia. i was a litttle worried about how her permanent teeth would come in–but the enamel on them is fine. she has hardly been to the doctor since she had her tonsils and adenoids removed. she is a fairly skinny little thing–but almost all of my kids are that way. we did have to check her for celiac last year because she was having alot of stomach aches and we know she has oneof the main genes–but she did not have it. we also had to check her for juvenile rheumetoid arthritis last year because she was having some joint pain. but that came back ok, too. just various aches and pains that came in clumps for some reason or another.
recently, she has been getting alot of mildly sore throats–i can see the infammation back by her uvula—it looks like a film atttaching it to the sides of her throat, but she doesn’t have a fever. i’m thinking maybe she has some allergies. but, overall, she has been in good health with very few problems. she’s a smart little second grader with hair clear down her back and big eyes—she looks so much like my twins did when they were little. she is above grade average in reading and at grade level in everything else. she doesn’t seem to have been permanently damaged by her two years of failure to thrive.March 4, 2012 at 4:24 pm #69993AnonymousInactiveSo did your daughter have the Nissen without the g tube?
March 4, 2012 at 7:08 pm #69994AnonymousInactiveyes, my daughter did not get a g-tube when she had her fundo done. she was eating ok, so they did not feel it was necessary. however, she weighed 16 lb.3 oz on the day of her surgery, and 7 weeks later she still weighed 16 lb.3oz. the surgeon wanted to put a g-tube in at that point, but the ped gi thought we should give her one more month. i managed to get enough weight on her to avoid the g-tube—i don’t remember how, but i did it. there was another time, when she was a little older, after we had gotten her esophageal thrush cleared up and she had been doing really well, when she got sick and started losing weight. the ped gi said we might have to consider a g-tube if she did not gain enough weight. we saw him again in a month, and he asked me how i had gotten the weight on her—i had been giving her pediasure. so i managed to avoid a g-tube two different times. i did not want to have to mess with one. sylvia stayed FTT for the first two years of her life. she was only around the 3%. it has been enough years now that i don’t remember if she dropped below that at times.
March 5, 2012 at 3:02 pm #70012AnonymousInactivetisnelgrove, have you tried spoon feeding him? In one of your posts you said he took solids from a spoon successfully. Perhaps you can do what I did and spoon feed him his breast milk or formula as well. This is how I kept my son out of the hospital. The Prevacid did stop his pain but it was too late because by the time we got him on a high enough dose (at 5 months) he had already developed a feeding aversion. The site of a bottle would make him scream, but he would take just about anything (breast milk, formula, cereal, etc.) from a spoon.
March 5, 2012 at 7:51 pm #70018AnonymousInactiveSo we are in the hospital tonight just thought I’d give a brief update…..LO has now been screaming for 5 hours straight and I’m miserable and I know he is!!! His GI dr decided to put him in with a NG tube tonight after two weeks of miserable feedings…..so here we sit!!!! And I’m sure it will be a miserable night for us as LO will probably not sleep here ! He has to co sleep withe at home anymore on his left side!! He also has two teeth coming thru and some awful looking ears!! 🙁
March 5, 2012 at 10:26 pm #70019AnonymousInactivehe’s cutting teeth and has two ear infections?–no wonder he doesn’t want to suck on anything. it seems kind of weird that your doc would put him in the hospital with an NG tube after only two weeks of difficult feeeding from a bottle—is this the same doc that wants to do a fundo??? his weight is good and i asssume he isn’t dehydrated since you said he was eating from a spoon fine. i think Christine’s idea of feeding him his formula from a spoon is a really good idea. also, you could start to teach him to drink from a regular cup at his age, it would only be small sips, but he could do it. a sippy cup still requires him to suck, usually, so it would hurt his ears and teeth, but a regular cup would not put the same kind of pressure on either one of them–i sure hate to see them make him dependent on an Ng tube and CREATE more eating problems than him just not wanting a bottle or a sippy cup. i’m a little concerned about the doctors you are seeing . i am concerned they are leading you down a path that could create more problems for you. where are you located?
there may be someone on this board, or someone Laura can contact that is near you and help you to find a better doctor.the things they are doing just seem really weird and a little excessive—-I’m not sure they aren’t missing the forest for the trees.let’s see if i have this right, he has no weight problems, he isn’t throwing up, he’s not dangerously dehydrated since he is taking food from a spoon, his ph probe only showed mild reflux, apparently his biopsies have not shown any serious inflammation—-as i assume they should be back by now. he likes to eat food off of a spoon. the biggest issues are that he screams alot and doesn’t want to suck on a bottle or a sippy cup, and he isn’t a good sleeper.Personally, i would get him out of your bed, by his age he is old enough to be developing a habit that will be really difficult to break. You could try putting him to sleep on his stomach during the day when you can keep an eye on him–he might be much more comfortable that way. as far as you saying that he only cat-napped—i had one child that only cat-napped for the first year of his life. after a year ahea started taking longer naps.obviously something is making your baby unhappy—but it sure doesn’t sound like it’s reflux–especially when you say he is cutting two teeth and has two bad ears. has he had other ear infections? also, babies can be cutting teeth for quite awhile before you realize what is going on—this could be part of his not wanting to suck on a bottle. if he has had other ear infections, that also could explain it. if he only had one infection but never got rid of fluid, he would be uncomfortable when he tried to suck onn a bottle.there is just somethign that seems really weird about whatever is going on with him and your doctor seems to be going to the extremes before checking out other possibilities. i don’t think i have ever heard of a doctor putting a baby into the hospital with an NG tube because they had two weeks of bad bottle feeding—especially when they are not having weight issues.do you really trust this guy?kevieb2012-03-05 22:43:31
March 5, 2012 at 10:34 pm #70020AnonymousInactiveHis weight had dropped some when we went in the office today so he said to give him a break from trying to suck, I don’t know???? I tried to give him solids today to and that went downhill too:( he took a couple of bites then was screaming so I don’t know what to do?!?! I am in Columbia Sc
March 5, 2012 at 10:50 pm #70021AnonymousInactivehow much did his weight drop?
March 5, 2012 at 10:55 pm #70022AnonymousInactiveHe was 15 lbs today. He was 16 lbs at his 4 month check up.
March 5, 2012 at 11:08 pm #70023AnonymousInactiveif he dropped that much weight since his 4 month check up–WHY did they not say anythign when he went in for his ph probe and scope???!!!!! they would have weighed him when they admitted him for those procedures–that should have put up major red flags. are you telling me that they have not weighed him anytime bvetween his 4 month check up and his appt today at 5 1/2 months???? with all the trouble you have been having, this is the first time they ahve weighed him???? get away from these doctors as fast as you can. if they are as bad as you are saying, they are going to do major damage to your baby!!!!
