So can I give prevacid OTC to my little one because my bottle is running low and GI won’t refill.
February 22, 2012 at 8:53 pm #69905hellbenntKeymaster[adding this in: I know I can come across as a snarky know-it-all. I am sorry. I just get so frustrated for you]
I’m not a Dr. I can’t tell you what to do. If it were ME, I’d give everything I could to help my baby’s pain. I’d also (continue to) research all the while. Then, I might try & back down in the meds. In the meantime, I’d try & find a dr who is willing to work w/ me to help my baby. It might even be that tests are needed…but I’d have to research to know which ones…I wouldn’t just medicate for no reason. I’d take notes & try different meds & doses & forms…every change can take a good 2 weeks…it’s a lot of trial & error…You’ve SEEN that the prevacid helps. So if you know it helps, then yes, I’d say to get prevacid OTC. You can order one of the products to make your own compound. Or, you can just get the capsules, open them up and give the beads. give the beads on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later. when you give the beads you give w/ applesauce. one tsp. this is hard to give to a baby, but you can use your finger & a syringe of water and try your best to wash it down…or take the top off a bottle and use it w/ some water to suck some water down to wash it all down…OTC w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc:

February 22, 2012 at 10:30 pm #69906AnonymousInactiveI have never thought prevacid has worked that well for him but it’s all the docs around here will prescribe!! I was thinking of trying OTC zegerid and mixing it myself. Just wondering if you’ve heard of this working when prevacid did not?
February 23, 2012 at 7:33 am #69909hellbenntKeymasterI have . And you can now also explore the other products available .
February 23, 2012 at 7:22 pm #69913AnonymousInactiveWell it seems like nothing is working for him. After 3 days on carafate he is still screaming and moaning most of the day. Tonight he screamed for 2 hours. I really don’t know what to do anymore!! Do you have anymore suggestions? Have you ever heard of medications not working for reflux? Is that even possible? I am so depressed. I also have a seven year old son and I feel like all my attenition is going to Logan. And no matter what I do…he doesn’t get any better.
February 23, 2012 at 8:04 pm #69914hellbenntKeymasterIf you truly think that nothing is working, I’d TELL dr that your baby needs a scope, NOW. they will look for EOS cells and even for thrush. they will look for irritation. if dr won’t agree, please get another one. and another one. I’d demand answers! hang in there!
as far as medication not working- it might just be that it’s not ENOUGH of a dose to even make a dent….I don’t know carafate dosing…ask the pharmacist??
February 24, 2012 at 2:25 pm #69916AnonymousInactiveLogan has never responded to any reflux treatments so the more I think about it something else has to be going on right? Positioning has never even helped him! I just don’t know what else it could be but his dr told me that if carafate didn’t help the would go back in and scope him and dilate that part of the esophagus. Do you think this will help him?
February 24, 2012 at 3:59 pm #69920hellbenntKeymasterwhen they do the scope TELL them you want biopsies taken (they should be doing this anyway?) and that you want them to look for THRUSH also. Esophogeal thrush isn’t as unusual as you might think & you can’t see it- it’s in the esopogus & you can have it w/o having it in your mouth…the INFORMATION from the scope will be beneficial to you, not the actual scope/dialating per se…
February 25, 2012 at 12:46 pm #69927AnonymousInactiveSo we are now pushing fluids thru the weekend but even with the carafate it seems as if he’s developing a feeding aversion so he will see the dr on Monday or Tuesday and sounds like they may even put him in the hospital if warranted ! I am such a concerned mom 🙁

February 27, 2012 at 12:17 pm #69933AnonymousInactiveYour posts bring back some terrible memories for me. My son DID develop a feeding aversion due to untreated reflux. It was nearly impossible to get the meds you needed when he was suffering because doctors didn’t take reflux seriously and rarely prescribed high enough doses, and Prevacid was not then available OTC. You can bet I would have been buying it and using it if it had been available.
I’ll tell you what finally helped me keep my son out of the hospital and off of a feeding tube. I started spoon feeding him his breast milk. He had developed a strong aversion to the bottle and he would not nurse either. The doctor told me to get him to eat or he was going to have to get a feeding tube. For some reason the thought of trying the spoon occurred to me and it worked. I’d prop him up in an infant seat and put the spoon to his lips and he’d slurp and swallow. It was messy and very time consuming, but it kept him fed and out of the hospital.
As for the Prevacid, it took 10 days of the right dose (30 mgs per day / 10 mgs three times daily. He was on the solutabs) before I saw him get any relief from his pain, but by then he’d already developed a feeding aversion so that even when his pain was gone (I could tell because his screaming and irritability stopped) he still would not take a bottle or sippy cup until he was 13 months old. He associated the bottle with pain. So I spoon fed him his breast milk (and all fluids) until he was 13 months old.
If you want to try this, I’d suggest using one of those plastic picnic type spoons because they are deeper and hold more than a baby spoon. Don’t push the spoon into his mouth. Just set it on his lower lip and push down slightly. Hopefully he’ll open his mouth and slurp like my son did. Even newborns will do this while waiting for mother’s milk to come in. They use little cups in the nursery and call it cup feeding. The spoon is easier though, I think.
Good luck. I know how hard it is. I pray you find relief for your son soon.ndrose2012-02-27 12:17:40
February 27, 2012 at 3:24 pm #69937AnonymousInactiveOk so I had a productive visit with his GI dr today!!! His normal dr is out of town so we saw a different one though! He took him off all his medications and put him on nexium 10 mg packets twice a day and also schedule him for an endoscopy and ph study this week! Does this dose of nexium sound right??
February 27, 2012 at 4:05 pm #69938AnonymousInactiveI’m glad to hear that you had a productive visit with the GI doc. I don’t know anything about Nexium or dosing for Nexium, but I wish you the best and pray it works.
Is he eating?
February 27, 2012 at 5:56 pm #69940AnonymousInactiveThank you for your suggestions! He is still eating although not well and when I say that I mean he pushes the bottle out of his mouth and slaps it away! It takes a while for me to get a bottle in him. I am praying for him!
February 27, 2012 at 7:34 pm #69941hellbenntKeymasterNexium dosing, directly from Dr. Philips: “from 1 month to 12 months 0.65 mg/ pound per dose, typically three doses per day”how much does he weigh?I’ll caculate 16lbs:0.65 x 16 = 10.4that’s 10.4 mgs 3 times a dayyou could try giving the 20 that the dr said to and then, if it doesn’t work, bump it up to 10 mgs three times a day- if it works, you could say,”oops! we were giving him THREE doses instead of the TWO you said, but LO! and behold! the 30mg is working, thank you so much!”hellbennt2012-02-27 19:37:58
