ppi and H2ra use in pregnancy??

I’m trying to get more info on use of ppi and h2ra during pregnancy and and if there is an increased risk that your baby will have infant reflux. I have asked 19 mothers so far if they have used these meds while pregnant and only 3 have and all 3 of their babies have infant reflux. the other 16 mothers either didn’t have reflux while pregnant or took Tums for their symptoms. I have 2 children now and both suffered with infant reflux and I plan to have a third. I took Pepcid AC both pregnacies. any info on this would be greatly appreciated, if there is any increased risk I will not take these meds during my next pregnancy. I would rather suffer than see my baby suffer.

I do not see how taking acid medications can affect whether or not your child will have reflux. Babies who have reflux have it because of an immature LES (lower esophageal spincter), and mothers taking acid blocking meds do not have any affect on that. If the mothers and the babies both had reflux it is most likely just genetic.

I didn’t take anything during my pregnancy with Kaelyn and she had severe reflux. I took zantac during my pregnancy with Alex and she had a pretty mild case. I don’t think that the meds make a difference in a child developing reflux.

I would agree with the others. It’s much more likely that the babies had reflux because their mother’s did. More of a genetic occurence.

I had no reflux during pregnancy and Alana had it. There are probably so many factors in play, including genetics, prematurity (Probably the key in Alana’s case) and just plain old bad luck!!!

I had reflux with both of my boys and took nothing and they both had reflux. My neighbor had severe reflux while pregnant and took prevacid and her baby did not have reflux. Like the other moms said, I really don’t think there is a connection. There have been so many moms on here trying to figure out why their babies had relux and trying to figure out what they did wrong during laobr or pregnancy, but honestly I haven’t seen any connections yet. I think we all want to figure it out so our next babies won’t have it, but sadly I think we’re out of luck. Trust me I wish I knew there was a reason both my boys had it so I could fix it next time, but I just plan on every baby I have having it.
