My son was diagnosed with reflux today…but I know a lot of times reflux is a symptom…I’m trying to decipher if he has an intolerance or what could possibly be causing the reflux, or if it’s more developmental.
He had pretty regular stools for the first week or so of his life, but he was projectile vomiting for the first week or so. He was switched to soy when his doctor found out he was projecting, but soy seemed to make him constipated & his stools were very hard & pebble like. Then he was put on Alimentum & has been on it since, which seems to have helped somewhat but not entirely. His stools are dark green, kind of slimy/sludgy & foul smelling. Is this more an issue with Alimentum, since he had different stools on other formulas, or could it possibly be intolerance related?
He also only poops every second or third day…usually third. He gets VERY fussy as the days go on & he hasn’t pooped. Usually he strains, grunts & turns red even though his stools are very slimy & not solid, which I find odd. He also ALWAYS has a red anus after he poops.
His tummy often gurgles & he passes gas quite a bit, but is a pain to burp…we MIGHT be able to get one good burp out of him & the rest of our attempts are futile. He spits up a lot, sometimes hours after eating, even in his sleep, which he then wakes up crying.
I’m sure his ped will prescribe meds next week [he was on Zantac & it made him really aggressive, so we’re hoping to try prevacid] but I’m wondering if that’s simply going to help with the reflux but not with anything else…
Does this sound like an intolerance [MSPI] or maybe a gastrointestinal infection? Suggestions?
