Hello everyone. I haven’t posted in a while, I try to offer advise as much as possible. our reflux is totally under control so i am grateful in that area. Emma’s sleeping is like a newborn. Up every 3-4 hours, fussy when she does wake. You can see 4 teeth on top and 2 are getting ready to break the skin. Of course they have been like that for a month, this takes forever. So I assumed the sleeping was b/c of that. I was just dealing with it and knew it would pass sometime (ya just get used to it). Well today she got a fever, 101.4 all day. No diarrhea, no throwing up, nothing. Just the same crankiness. She doesn’t pull at her ears and somedays are better than others when it comes to eating. So of course I always blame it on the teething. Doc seems to think possible ear infection and wants to see her in the morning. I feel aweful if that is what it might be, she has never had one and I never even thought about it. Do these symptoms sound familiar when your little ones got a ear infection???
January 31, 2006 at 3:21 pm #383AnonymousInactiveBrandy – Sorry your little one isn’t feeling well . . .it sounds familiar to me. Don’t feel bad if an ear infection is the case – my soon to be two year old just got her 12th double ear infection (shes also had three singles too!) and I was none the wiser when this one came up.
Sophia’s ear infections always seem to coincide with heavy teething and usually its a cold that aggrivates the situation – some kids are just more prone. Its been ten months since her last ear infection and like you, I had been keeping my eye on her teething (with two year molars). She had been a little edgy and her appetite was lower than normal but I upped her fluids and chaulked up the crankiness and the few night wakings to teething. In the past she was MISERABLE at night but I think that was uncontrolled reflux and MSPI on top of it all. LUCKILY I had been giving her motrin/tylenol for the teeth but then she got a fever of a 104 for 24 hours and thats when I went into urgent care . . .I was actually thinking sinus infection because believe it or not at almost two she was saying “nose nose nose” . . .figured by now she would be telling me about ear pain but I guess not – lol. Anyway, any time you’ve got a cold/teething coinciding with a higher temp its always good to get them checked out just in case.
BTW – still keep an eye on it if they give her an antibiotic if she does have an infection .. .if she doesn’t seem to be feeling better within 48 hours it could be the antibiotic isn’t working and she may need a different one. Atleast thats was the case a couple of times with Sophia.
Its so hard to tell with these little ones especially when they are really bothered by teething – lots of cuddles and plenty of fluids will get her back on her feet hopefully :-). Hope she feels better soon.

PS – if she needs an antibiotic make sure you keep up with the diaper rash protection since it really can do a number on their tummies and diarrhea is often a side effect which causes nasty diaper rashes. Ask your doctor about starting Acidiphilous too .. it helps my dd a lot when shes on meds. Increased amounts of yogurt are also a big help.
January 31, 2006 at 3:39 pm #387AnonymousInactiveOH Thanks Liz. That makes me feel better. I am sorry she has had so many infections. One of my good friends little boy had 8 infections his first year. They put tubes in his ears and he has been fine ever since. Have the docs thought about that? I had them too and they did wonders for me. I have been really lucky to make it almost 11 months without one, I was stupid to the symptoms. She has had a on again off again cold for the past month too. Just the congestion and runny noses. Nothing too bad. I just hope she hasn’t had this for too long. Thank you so much for the great advice I really appreciate it!!!
Is the Acidiphilous a probotic?
January 31, 2006 at 3:46 pm #388AnonymousInactiveBrandy – yes, the acidiphilous is a probiotic and it really helps my dd – my doctor reminds me to use it religiously. I’ve been to an ENT for Sophia but honestly, I think its just teething related and shes prone. I don’t know if tubes would help. I think I am going to go back though and re-discuss it though now that shes talking I would like another hearing test just to be safe. If Emma does have an ear infection I’m sure it hasn’t been too long or she would have let you know about it under no uncertain circumstances. The Sunday I called and made an urgent care appt. my daughter absolutely freaked out, yelling no at her father, hitting the dog, being just plain miserable – I was SO happy I had already called. Besides, since they really can’t communicate all you can do is observe and thats why fevers crop up – to send out a warning signal. Sounds like you did all you could have so far. The good thing about lo’s is they get sick fast and recover just as quickley .
Let us know what happens ..

January 31, 2006 at 4:11 pm #389AnonymousInactiveThanks, I will definetly post when I get back from the doc. When I had my tubes in I was older and when I talked I could not pronounce my words very well and it was b/c I could not hear well enough so I was saying the words like I was hearing them. I think a hearing test is a great idea b/c that would definetly help you decide whether or not to get them. It is about a 10 minute procedure, painless, and worth it if that is what she needs. My mom remembers after I got my tubes, we were in the car with the windows down and I said “I can hear the air.” She could not believe how little I could really hear.
January 31, 2006 at 4:18 pm #390AnonymousInactiveOh so cute and sad too . .. my younger brother had tubes as well and by then he had some difficulties with speech. I definitely don’t want that to happen with Sophia. I just realized today actually that she was saying a lot more since we started the anitbiotic, makes me wonder how well she can really hear things .. . .
I know this though, she can hear the faintest little noise at 2 am which is why I don’t overanalyze it too much ..
January 31, 2006 at 4:28 pm #391AnonymousInactiveI am glad to hear that she hasn’t had a problem with hearing. I so hope that stays true. Even though it is a painless procedure it is still something they have to go through and we would rather keep from it. Can I ask in your opinion which antibotic has helped her with her infections the best??
January 31, 2006 at 7:41 pm #407hellbenntKeymasterFebruary 1, 2006 at 9:59 am #446AnonymousInactiveHey Brandy – did you go to the docs? Sophia did very well on zithromax – although I don’t know if thats the norm .. .
February 1, 2006 at 3:53 pm #468AnonymousInactiveHi Brandy ~ We are going through the same exact thing right now. Three days ago, Hailey started running a low grade fever 99-100 under the arm. Her cheeks were bright red and I could just tell she had a fever. She has no cold right now and no other symptoms. She is also teething and has been working on her two bottom eye teeth for about a month now. I looked last night and they are just about to poke through, the spots look like canker sores. Anyway, last night she woke up with an even higher fever (102 under the arm – very high for her) and so off to the Ped’s office we went today. She does have an ear infection (only her second in 18 months) but he said that the high fever isn’t from the ear infection but instead from some other virus. I’m glad I took her in to be checked, she wasn’t doing any ear pulling or anything obvious either. Sometimes, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
I think they generally prescribe amoxicillian for the initial antibiotic and if that one doesn’t work then the prescribe some of the other newer ones.
February 2, 2006 at 11:18 am #523AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone. I always appreciate your help. Well when I got home from work on Tuesday night Emma was miserable. I could not wait any longer to go to the doc so I took her to a urgent care at childrens mercy hospital. We got there at 9:30p and it took till midnight to get a room. At about 1a I ran to the nurses station b/c she was really hot. It was 103 and they immediately gave her motrin and I got to see a doc. Guess what!! Her ears were fine, she said they looked perfect. They checked for RSV and influenza and they came back negative. They really didn’t think it was a virus b/c she had no other symptoms. Then they did a urine sample, which requires a catheter. It only took half a second but of course she was screaming and I was crying my eyes out. The urine came back with a very high count of white blood cells. They said they did a culture but of course that takes a couple of days for the bacteria to grow if any but they really seemed to think that is what it was. We finally got out of there at 5:30a with amoxilicilian since she had never been on it before. I called into work yesterday of course, I had been up 23 hours straight. I am just glad I went b/c the ped would have never done that. I just can’t believe she is having one so young. I have them all the time. They said it could be as simple as not cleaning as well as she needs it after diaper changes or she might need a ultrasound to make sure it isn’t more serious. So they will send the culture results to her ped and the ped is going to call me when they get for the next plan of action. This is way to much for one day!!! OH, one of her teeth finally poped through on Tuesday too. That’s got to help her crankiness too!!!
Stacey~I hope Hailey gets to feeling better soon.
February 2, 2006 at 12:41 pm #528AnonymousInactiveBrandy – I feel so bad for both of you! Atleast you have a childrens hospital close by that could take of it. Boy. .. hopefully the amox. will kick in and she will feel better really soon the poor baby. Glad you caught it and got her in there though. . .. heres to a more peaceful night!
