Infantreflux.org | Possable delay in gastric emptying?

So Brielle is basically 11 months old and her reflux is still as bad as ever. But now Im starting to wonder if its more than reflux. She can eat lunch at noon and at 5pm she will still be throwing up pieces of the food she ate at noon. Is that normal?

It sounds like she might have DGE if it takes her that long to digest her food. You could ask her doctor about an emptying scan to find out. Is she gaining weight okay?

Weight gain is fine. She is just still throwing up her food hours after eating it.

I would maybe ask her ped about some motility meds to try to see if helps. The longer the food stays in her tummy the more chances of spitting up and vomiting. My dd is on erothimitin (sp?) and it seems to help.

Commonly prescribed motility drugs for infants include Reglan (metoclopramide) and erythromycin, and here in Canada we can also get Motilium (domperidone) which my daughter is currently on. Not sure if you can get that in the US though. Reglan can be controversial because of potential side effects in infants and children, but I know a few moms on here have mentioned using erythromycin for their little ones.

So sorry to hear you and Brielle are having as tough a time as ever. So are we, and it can be so discouraging when you are hoping for them to hurry up and outgrow it! Hang in there, and try to take it one day at a time. Good luck!

She is allergic to Reglan. That one we tried when she was first diagnosed. Havent tried the Erythromycin and her ped is so mad that the US wont let the Motilium be used he because he said that is the best drug on the market.

I personally wouldn’t put my DD on anything with potiental side effects like Reglan has…no way. i would deal with it until it got better…but just my opinion…I hate meds in the first place though.

We recently had the same issue with Owen. He would eat at 6pm and then 7:30 bottle and at 10:30-11 pm he would throw up stuff from supper at 6– like whole pieces. I have kind of limited his meals and fed him more often. I also only let him have a 5 oz bottle at betime since he just ate. His reflux is well under control now though and her’s doesn’t seem to be.

Are you still bf’ing? It’s of course always hard to tell how much they are taking in that way. Is she sleeping any better??
