Goodness. We went to our first appt. with the new ped. GI (our old one left the practice). Today was supposed to be a follow up. I am just a bit puzzled by the advice he gave me. Let me know what you think.
I told him that Evie had been doing great on hidden dairy, cheese and yogurt and that I did a transition myself about a month ago with about 7 scoops neocate and one scoop good start. This went well for about 3 days and then on the 3rd or 4th day, the mucous diarrhea was horrific. So, I stopped all dairy, soy again and symptoms resolved. I told him also that it could’ve been a coincidence b/c of all the other dairy she had been doing fine on. Maybe it was just a virus??? Anyhow, he tells me to begin transitioning her to soy milk. Not soy formula–soy milk, using 7 parts neocate one part soy milk and to see how this goes. I ask him about goats milk, he tells me that it doesn’t have enough folic acid, I ask him about fortified rice milk, he tells me its all carbs. Then… he tells me that if the soy doesn’t work, I should start giving her OJ with calcium added!! She’ll be a year in about two weeks. Did I just get med school advice circa 1980?? Or does this sound right to anyone??!!!?!February 14, 2008 at 8:52 pm #48239hellbenntKeymasterEvie has dh’s birthday!
(& thanks again for helping me at work! katie helped me, yay!)Adding a bit of soy milk to formula doesn’t sound that weird.the OJ, well let’s just say it scared me to death so that poor Jonah only drinks it now at age 4 and change when we’re out to breakfast & that’s not that often, LOL!February 15, 2008 at 6:48 am #48248AnonymousInactiveLaura, what’s wrong with OJ???? My kids don’t drink it but you’ve got me wondering. I always figured that it wouldn’t be that good for a kid with GERD due to the acid.

I have a suggestion and you can take it or leave it. Since Evie is on Neocate and even though she has been doing well with hidden dairy maybe try a switch to Alimentum or Nutramigen before going to a totally milk based formula. We just made the switch from Nutramigen to Gentlease and then my next step will be the Enfamil Next Step Lipil and then finally to milk. Mainly because we have a case that was given to us but also b/c I am chicken to go straight from Gentlease to whole milk. Maybe try one of the other hypo formulas and then switch to Goodstart and see how that goes. Just a suggestion or do soy milk if you are comfortable with that. But let us know how it goes. And Laura and Lori, I won’t even give Cooper oranges yet let alone OJ… I don’t even like that b/c of the acid myself….February 15, 2008 at 8:30 pm #48274hellbenntKeymasterlori, I don’t like OJ bcse it’s so acidic so I was always petrified to give it to Jonah. also he reacted to it when I drank it while breastfeeding…
