dangling off the couch and i ran over and it was too late and he fell
on the floor about a foot. its carpeted…but i dont know what to do im
icing it right now and keeping him awake.should i take him to the er or is DCFS going to get incolved and take him away???
omg i cant believe i am a horrible mother!!
August 22, 2006 at 1:02 pm #11924AnonymousInactiveI think he is probably fine, but if you are worried, and you need to be the judge, then you need to call the pediatrician. You are NOT a horrible mother, and these things can happen all the time. I do not think your peds would call DCF because Trace fell off the couch.
Please don’t think you are a horrible mother! Dylan once fell down the deck stairs with a bloody nose and everything. I was freaking out, called the doctor, so sure I was the worst mother in the world, and of course, Dylan was fine!
Call the Ped if you are worried, and please don’t worry what they will think. I’m sure they see these things multiple times a day!!!!
August 22, 2006 at 1:18 pm #11929AnonymousInactiveMatthew has fallen so many times… i donĀ“t think i was careless but sometimes accidents happen… i am usually holding him by one hand and he is walking and all of the sudden he starts running and there we go… and the floors are tile here for example and he has not ever got a bump!
Watch for his reaction – if he is OK and responding he should be fine. If you are worried then call the ped, but many kids have fallen and they are fine
August 22, 2006 at 1:34 pm #11934AnonymousInactiveHow is he acting? If he was hurt I’m sure he’d let you know.
My kids have fallen off of things, out of things, you name it. I felt like a lousy mother each time, but these things happen sometimes.
If was only a foot fall onto a carpeted floor, I’m sure he’s fine and I doubt anyone would be suspicious if you took him to the doctor. If it were me, I’d probably just watch him closely; unless he fell on his head or neck…then I’d probably call or take him in just to be on the safe side.
What are you icing? Does he have a lump or a bruise?
August 22, 2006 at 1:38 pm #11936AnonymousInactivehe did fall on his head, and i am pretty sure i feel a slight bump. he
cried for a while. i am trying to ice it but he cries bc its cold..i called the ped but she most likely wont call me back till 4 or 5 since she has a private practice and is busy.
this girl on a message board said DCFS took her baby away just because
they were outside with her and it was hot and she didnt want to eat her
bottle and seemed dehydrated. if DCFS takes your child away because of
that then i am sure they would take him if i brought him to the
hospital! this is crazy!has anyone had a baby fall when they were this young though?!

August 22, 2006 at 1:50 pm #11937AnonymousInactiveMarisa fell off our bed when she was about 5 months old. It was about 2
feet and deeply carpeted/padded. She cried for a good 10-15 minutes. I
called our Ped and she said one of the most common calls she gets is
about babies falling off the bed/changing table, etc. She said to bring her
in if I noticed a goose egg bump, if she wasn’t acting like herself, if she
vomited more than once, etc. She was fine after a bit – DH and I were
wrecks and felt terrible.
Just this Saturday at Marisa’s birthday party, my niece (20 months) fell at
least a foot onto our hardwood floor and banged her head REALLY hard.
Immediately went into a goose-egg and she was screaming. Our family
friend, a retired nurse, said that in addition to the vomiting and all to
check that she was alert and to shine a flashlight into her eyes to make
sure they both immediately dilated normally. The next day my sister
called her Ped and they said it sounded like she was fine and not to
worry. She’s doing OK – it’s tender but she’s playing and eating and
sleeping like normal. My sister is a wreck of course.
I would call your Ped if you are concerned at all though – even just for
peace of mind. I really don’t think they would get DCFS involved for that
at all – I find it hard to believe that the other girl’s baby was taken away
for that – and wonder if she’s not telling part of the story.
Hugs to you and Trace.
August 22, 2006 at 2:33 pm #11943AnonymousInactiveColt was about the same age as Trace when he fell off the couch. That is where he took his naps and he was asleep so I went to the bathroom really fast but I heard thump before I got back. He was laying of the hardwood floor and screaming. We just kept an eye on him and he was fine.
August 22, 2006 at 2:35 pm #11944AnonymousInactivethank you guys for making me feel much better. i am going to keep an eye on him.
i was just so worried that he would have brain damage and be developmentally challenged or something….
August 22, 2006 at 3:02 pm #11950AnonymousInactiveMy babies haven’t fallen yet, but my 2 yr is really mean to my baby. I went to throw a diaper away and heard Justice crying and my 2 yr old was dragging him around. My chiropractor says that most babies will have a really bad fall before age 1 and my ped. said they know the difference between when a baby is beaten and an accident. I’m sure your little one is fine. You might want to think about taking him to the chiropractor though. That is just my thought though. I take both of my boys. Of course, our chiroprator is really nice and gives us a huge discount. We were desperate with my first refluxer and took him in. He cryed the whole time. I think she felt sorry for us. She has really helped my first son. He had constipation issues until we took him to her.

The first night I was home from the hospital with Sarah I was nursing in the glider, and the next thing I knew she was lying on the floor. I guess I’d fallen asleep. When I told the ped, he laughed at me, and said that I wasn’t the first parent, and certainly wouldn’t be the last to do that.
With Hailey, I put her on the ottoman in her boppy for a couple of minutes while I went to the washroom. She was sleeping (which was a rarity around our house), and when I came back the boppy was gone… it had fallen off the couch, and I couldn’t find Hailey at first glance. She had slid under the blanket that was at the other end of the ottoman and was covered head to toe.
I guess my point is that we all make mistakes… yours being a pretty common one. My friend’s baby fell off the change table when she went into the other room to go get some wipes… she found out the hard way that he could roll when he banged his face right into the bathroom tile, and was bleeding everywhere.
As for child and family services, I don’t think you have to worry. And I’d be surprised if the story you heard about was the whole truth.
Anyhow, just watch him, and see what the doc says when she calls back. HUGS.
August 22, 2006 at 9:05 pm #12005AnonymousInactiveI’m late responding to this, but everyone else is right. We all have something like this happen at some point in time. Kaelyn was around 3 or 4 months old when she fell out her swing. I had forgotten to strap her in and she took a header right out of it onto the carpet. I panicked and watched her carefully for hours, but she was fine. Dh gave me a hard time about it (mostly joking) and then he made the same mistake with the bouncer a couple of weeks later.
August 23, 2006 at 8:48 pm #12124AnonymousInactiveAidan fell off the bed last week, at LEAST a foot fall onto a wood floor, but all he got was a little bruise on his leg (how he escaped hitting his head I’ll never know) and now that he’s pulling up on things, the poor kid bonks his head all the time. Kids are suprisingly resiliant, my sister is a testament to that, she had FOUR concussions before she turned 5 and has always been the “smart” one!!!!!
August 24, 2006 at 10:47 am #12168AnonymousInactiveI’m late responding as well, but don’t think you are a horrible mother!
When my 8 year old was about 4-5 months old, I had him in his bouncy chair on the kitchen table. That being said, please keep in mind this was my THIRD child at the time and I do know better. I was cooking dinner, he was right behind me, bounced himself on onto our really hard kitchen floor face first, bouncy chair still attached. No apparent injuries at all. Later I found out he broke 2 ribs when he hads a chest x-ray for his asthma. Talk about feeling like a horrible mother!
Also, over the course of about 1-2 months (in addition to the bouncy chair) my middle son had required stitches twice for head injuries. One because his brother kicked a soccer ball at him, tripped him and he hit his head on our porch steps, and the other time because they were playing power rangers in the living room and he flipped over onto an end table.
My middle son (who is now 14) has flipped over baby gaits, climbed out of his crib when he was 10 months old and fell down the stairs, got knocked in the head and fell down by bike handlbars (got 2 huges knots out of that one one on the front and one on the back), fell off the back of a battery car, flipped off his bike into the ditch, it’s endless! He was a disaster area. He was one of those kids that needed a leash or to be in a padded cell. lol.
I told them to knock it off or else they were going to think I was abusing them! So anyway, don’t think you are a bad mom. We all just do things sometimes that maybe aren’t the smartest things in the world, but it in no way means you are a horrible mother!!!
I hope he’s doing okay!!!
