Hello all, our story is SOOOO long I’ve tried to condense it here:
Jasper is 3.5 months old, diagnosed with reflux and laryngomalacia and was also tongue tied (posterior). Has always been really gassy which i thought was related to air swallowing from laryngomalacia and tongue tie.
He had been on zantac since 4 months which helped with his reflux symptoms unless his dose needed to be increased in which case we always had a relapse.
I went off dairy and soy (except hidden dairy) from weeks 5-8 but it didn’t seem to make a difference so I didn’t suspect MSPI.
3 weeks ago I got so tired of his nighttime problems with thrashing and crying in his sleep for hours each night that I went on total elimination diet. I suspected allergies because I’d seen a couple of mucusy stools and also a redness around his anus.
On November 22 we switched from zantac to prevacid solutabs which as you probably know are made in lactose.
November 28th I gave up on the elimination diet as it didn’t seem to be making any difference.. there was still redness around anus and still same sleeping problems.
Three nights later he was up two nights in a row with HORRIBLE stomach cramping and gas. Our pedi GI said to stop the concurrent zantac we were giving him (until the two weeks it takes for prevacid to kick in) and that night we stopped he was pretty good.
What followed were two ok nights (like normal crying in his sleep with gas from about 4-6:30 am etc)
Then, last night all hell broke loose. He was impossible to put to sleep, cried in his sleep all night long I believe from reflux as well as terrible gas.
This morning he had a small BM and I noticed a burn like rash around his bottom. His check rash also returned.
Here is a picture of both:

My question is for those of you with babies with MSPI does that picture look like the sx of it?
Also, I was thinking he was having a bad reaction to the lactose in the prevacid solutabs, but perhaps it was a reaction to me starting dairy again after giving up on TED?
Is it possible that I could see symptoms worsen with a dairy challenge when they never really got better when OFF dairy??
Any insight would be so appreciated.. it’s so heart breaking to watch my little boy suffer 🙁

Could be a combination of that and going back off the diet? I would do the diet again (I can’t say from experience, but I can imagine, it is SOOOOO hard) but then change the form of prevacid and do one change at a time to see what is really the culprit. Zantac also made both of my boys fussier…..
Hang in there!December 4, 2008 at 3:12 pm #59191AnonymousInactiveI think you might need to go back on TED and give it a good 2-3 wks before you give up b/c it can take that long for the offending proteins to clear out of babies system. I believe they are out of your milk pretty quickly, but not out of babies system for some time. I will say that Cooper had MSPI and never had any real rashes to speak of, he did have mucous in his stools but he only ever had 1 diaper rash and that was not related to his MSPI. I would stick with the solutabs and restart TED if I were in your shoes.

Beth is right… the offender is out of your system within 4 days usually but it lingers in baby’s system a bit longer & then the irritation to the colon that it causes can take up to 6wks to heal (it took 5.5 wks w/ us).
HTH & hang in there…
December 9, 2008 at 4:03 pm #59394AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to update.. I’m pretty sure he’s allergic to lemons and that was the source of his rash.
December 9, 2008 at 5:47 pm #59403AnonymousInactivewhy are you feeding that kid lemons???!!!!! what kind of mother are you, any way?????
JUST KIDDING!!!!! i’m sorry, i couldn’t resist pretending to think you would feed him plain lemons. it’s just been one of those days……….December 9, 2008 at 9:16 pm #59414AnonymousInactivei know it’s hard to hear that you have to stay on TED longer to see results….i remember when I received the same comments and thought…@#$%.
but…it won’t be as bad as you think (although you may not be thinking it’s bad).
i saw that you are doing NAET… so you can theoretically add things back in as they clear. I would stick with the diet. However, you could also have your practitioner test things that are okay to eat…for example I stuck with TED but had her test rice, turkey, sweet potatoes, apples, pears and some others to get a little more variety.
We also did an intolerance saliva test to rule those out. I will find the web address for the lab I used and post it hereDecember 9, 2008 at 9:36 pm #59416AnonymousInactiveand is that a hydrocele i see in the photo?
