Has anyone had this done or know anything about it? They have scheduled my son for next week. I thought I read on Marci-kids that it isn’t the best test to run or the most reliable?
April 9, 2008 at 7:16 pm #50152AnonymousInactivewhen sylvia had her ph probe done it made all the difference in the world in her treatment. we discovered her reflux was alot worse than i realized. she ended up having a fundo just before she turned 10 months old.
April 12, 2008 at 9:20 am #50235AnonymousInactiveHi there. A couple of questions for you….How did they change her treatment? And whats’s a fundo?
April 12, 2008 at 1:55 pm #50241AnonymousInactivea fundo is short for fundoplication. it is when they wrap the top of the stomach around the bottom of the esophagus and stitch it in place to create an artificial valve to stop the reflux. a nissen fundo is probably the most common one done, which is a complete wrap. there is a partial wrap that is done on children with motility problems, but the name slips me right now. a fundo is usually only done when all other options have been exhausted. sylvia’s reflux % was almost 25% overall when you averaged the amount she had when sitting up( 29% )and when she was lying down (19%.) she was also failure to thrive, anemic, and her esophagus was getting ulcerated. we discovered this when she was only 8 months old. she had her surgery just before she turned 10 months old.
when sylvia had her surgey done they discovered she had a good size hiatal hernia, so there was really no other option but surgery for her.April 13, 2008 at 3:17 pm #50279AnonymousInactiveWe couldn’t really get any help until we had the prob test done. Landon, is a silent refluxer so none of the doctors wanted to say that was it or give him any meds. even though I knew that was it and the feeding clinic bet me it was reflux. As soon as the GI got his results she called and said she was sorry, Landon has the worst case of silent reflux ahe has ever seen, and called him in his meds, that night.

Thye may have said that because now Dr. are pushing to have an Impendance probe done.It is similiar to a Ph probe except that an Impendance probe can tell you the exacty PH number of the reflux that comes up. with a PH probe it can’t tell the difference between all the types of refulx. Not all reflux is acidic. Some kids will reflux their food up even when their reflux is 100% under control> My son is in this catagory. His reflux is 100% under control and yet he will vomit 1-2 times per day. It is a behavioral response (learned due to SEVERE reflux in the past) to eating foods that are not pureed.Ds had an Impendance probe and it gave LOTS of useful information. You have a “constant” int he room wiuth you to marik onto the computer all of the hcild’s movemetn,s reactions, (burps, vomits, arching….ect..( they also input in the hcild’s postion. All this adds up to a better test. -
