Ped. Said Milk before 1 year?

Ok. Today was Marshall’s 9 month check up and the ped. said that we could start milk before one year of age if he was not anemic. She actually gave me a hand out that said you can start at 9 months?? He was not anemic but she did say that since Marshall had reflux, we can wait until he is upright more, like between 10 and 11 months to start weaning to whole milk. Has anyone started their little one before 12 months of age and has anyone’s ped. said the same? I feel like he needs the formula at least until 11.5 months and maybe then start weaning? I would like to know what you girls/guys think about this.

Maybe I’m a little too strict on this, but I believe there are certain things that kids need to wait until they are at least a year to eat either because their systems need to mature more, or it could cause allergies. Milk is one of them. I also think there are things in breastmilk & formula that aren’t in milk that it would be good for them to have until they’re at least a year. My kids’ grandparents think we’re insane… but oh well.

This is just my opinion though. You do what you feel is best for your baby.

Did you say milk at 9 months of age????

I’ve been asking myself the same question about milk lately. Since when is it considered so urgent that we get our babies onto whole milk? Is it a “dairy conspiracy” or what? Did you happen to read my recent thread, “Myles’ one year check up?” My doc was horrified that I was still giving Myles formula. Personally I think it’s rediculous. I gave my two older children formula until they were at least 15 months old and then a combination of milk and formula until they were 18 months old, and that’s what I intend to do with Myles. Sheesh! It must be something in the air.

BTW…Marshall is a very cute name.

you know, years ago, when my oldest kids were babies they used to say no milk until a year old. at some point in time they decided it was ok to give kids milk after 6 months—-i hadn’t even heard the 9 month thing.

I rather like the idea of a Dairy Association conspiracy with the Pediatricians…I bet the pharmaceutical companies are involved somehow….just kidding (or am I?)
