My son Ian whose been doing wonderfully on Simply thick and elecare for a few weeks recently got a cold (a week ago). It’s been getting better every day with minimal coughing and sneezing yesterday. However, daycare did call me home because he was crying uncontrollably and they (and I) assumed it was because he had to have bowel movement. I brought him to the doctor-he was fine-smiley, happy, came home had prune juice and a big bm. Now last night he was up on and off with weird little cries out. Sometimes he woke playfully, but mostly weird little cries-like nightmares. Now today, every time I put him down for a nap, he wakes up screaming and crying. Then, for the last hour this weird yellow thick spit up. Other then that he seems perfectly normal and happy, but I’m freaking.
Any thoughts?? Prune juice is doing this maybe? Cold took a bad turn? Reflux?? Thank you!

January 27, 2006 at 3:01 pm #190AnonymousInactiveSounds like maybe mucous from the cold? Did doctor check his ears and listen to his chest? It is cold/flu and RSV season.
Have you called the doctor? Please keep me posted and email me anytime.
January 27, 2006 at 3:15 pm #192AnonymousInactiveI am trying to think when Isaac had to drink prune juice what color was it coming back up. I think it was a red/purple color.
January 27, 2006 at 3:22 pm #193AnonymousInactiveYes, when Marisa has prune juice (which doesn’t sit well with her) it would come back up a brownish/purplish color.
January 27, 2006 at 3:24 pm #194AnonymousInactiveI can’t remember if she checked his chest but definitely not his ears. I did tell her a 1000x he had a cold but yesterday it was barely visible as it was getting better. Symptoms definitely around today again. He’s not pulling his ears or anything and his mood is really great.
This may sound dumb but whats RSV?
Thanks guys. Waiting for Dr. to call back.
January 27, 2006 at 4:51 pm #198AnonymousInactiveThe yellow thick spitup sounds like its from sinus drainage thats been swallowed. Noah would have that if he spit up or vomited when he had a cold. The doc could also see it in the back of his throat when he examined him.
RSV is a viral lower respiratory infection. Here’s a link if your interested in RSV: http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/rsv.html
I hope Ian starts to feel better.
January 27, 2006 at 5:13 pm #199AnonymousInactiveThat makes a lot of sense, Lisa.
Tracy – what did the doctor say?
January 27, 2006 at 5:30 pm #200AnonymousInactiveHe thinks most likely cold (same thoughts on mucas coming back up) because there is no fever and Ian is in such good spirits. We’re just both stumped on why he can lay flat no problem but when he tries to sleep or when he finally falls asleep he wakes up hysterical. We’re thinking maybe that’s a separate issue of teething-he has been eating hands like mad. Who knows-it’s such a guessing game. He doesnt think it’s reflux just because of the way he’s been acting-plus even with all the spit up he’s done today, he’s been giggling. Eating has been ok not great not bad.
Oh my heavens!!! RSV is the scariest thing I’ve ever heard. My doctor said we want to be careful on the off chance that is what it is as well. I called my daycare already and asked them to call the parents of the children who are with colds right now just to make sure. They think I’m cookoo and I probably am, but I just had a mini heart attack when I looked rsv up! I’m going out of town this weekend and of course, am now a nervous wreck to leave town.
Thank you for the warm wishes!
Tracy
January 28, 2006 at 6:48 am #220AnonymousInactiveTry not to panic and enjoy your weekend. Let us know how he is!
January 30, 2006 at 1:52 pm #308AnonymousInactiveTracy – how was your weekend and how is Ian?
January 30, 2006 at 3:38 pm #311AnonymousInactiveHi Karen-
Well-weekend was puzzling. His cold definitely is better (whew-RSV panic over for now)-sneezing, couging, congestion started to decrease day by day. His nose is still gunky in the am, but goes away mid morning.
We kept up prune juice every day (undiluted-original suggestion by Dr. S) and he got irritable more and more-not screaming just no smiles for us. I’m praying that is not ANOTHER intolerance like rice and formula but rather just made him crampy. And, it did not make him poop any sooner. He still went on the third day to the letter time and all it did was make it super watery rather then loose like normal. My dh and I have decided to stop worrying about it and let nature take its’ course. He’s at least consistent. He does seem v. uncomfortable by that third day though.
Finally, we’re having a weird bottle aversion problem and again I have to stand by that I don’t think it’s acid. Now, he is teething bad-he’s getting two on the UPPER left back! Not sure if they’re molars, but one is definitely angry and ready to pop out any minute. So I know that’s affecting the eating, but he’s also wriggly while he eats and still pulling legs up like it’s pain in abdomen. Do you think that’s connected to the teething too? I’m worried it may be the simply thick because he was doing it last week prior to the prune juice. Can’t get him to sit still for more than 2oz and then he just pushes bottle away.
Sleeping is back to normal at night – sleeping 10 hours straight, but all weekend he would take these two hour naps 2 -3 a day. Maybe that was getting rid of the cold?
So he”s not in out and out pain but he’s definitely not himself. We get the big shots tomorrow (joy). Any words of advice? Of course, am going to bombard ped with questions and my new obsession is celiac disease because Ian’s had all that rice since 1 month.
Little down-Sister in law had a baby 2 months behind us and their baby never cries, is developmentally where Ian is now, and they’re really enjoying parenthood. I am too and I don’t in any way want them to go through this, but I’m bummed we have these ups and downs and I do worry he’ll never be able to eat anything ever. Over the top I know, but it’s one of those down days for us.
How’s sweet Marisa? Read on another post she’s taking the alimentum ok! Are you having any bottle refusal at all? ARe the poops picking up?
Thanks for listening!

January 30, 2006 at 5:47 pm #315AnonymousInactiveTracy,
I’m sorry to hear that Ian is still not well, but at least he is on the mend from the sounds of it.
I also have a niece who is just 3 weeks older than Hailey, so I know how it can feel when you see other people in your family with non-refluxers. To make things worse, my niece happens to be the happiest, easiest baby you’ve ever seen- eats everything, sleeps well, loves everyone and everything, and is super-baby in terms of development (crawling, pulling up, sitting up, waving, and clapping at 7 months). My sister also had a baby 3 months ago, and he sleeps all the time, is so happy, never cries, eats like a horse, and is super easy. It’s hard not to compare them, but I try not too because it just gets me down. In fact some times if I’m having a bad day I can get quite bitter about it. Some babies are just harder as infants, but I like to believe that one day, they will become the most wonderful children and adults. Hang in there.
January 30, 2006 at 6:51 pm #318AnonymousInactiveGlad to hear it re congestion. Do you have a humidifier in his room?
Prune juice is strong – could definitely be giving him cramps. It does Marisa – I totally avoid it.
Bad teething could definitely cause bottle aversion. Marisa is getting
close too and it seems like the eye teeth actually! Who knows though. In Ian’s case – seems like maybe mixture of gas/constipation and
teething? You could always give Mylanta 15 minutes before one of his
bottles to see if it helps – you’d know re acid/reflux maybe that way?Marisa is doing well so far. Had a really good BM Saturday but only a
pebble since then. I think she’s OK with the Alimentum so far but hard
to tell. She does have some pimples on face but no other rashes and
seemed happy and slept well today so fingers crossed. She does CONSTANTLY have thumb/fingers in mouth today but i think it’s more of a teething/gas thing than reflux.
Some babies just develop faster than others. Ian will catch up! As for
shots, Marisa reacted badly to the 4-month ones. 102 fever, really
cranky, etc. But only lasted about 2 days. Give him Tylenol before you
go and 4 hours later and bring a bottle with you to calm him down after
shots.Let us know how it goes.
January 30, 2006 at 11:17 pm #335AnonymousInactiveOh yes-humidifer absolutely. But cold seems to have moved on thankfully.
They told me he didn’t eat much at daycare today and was in ‘ok’ mood. Pretty much same with me-he’s just not as smiley happy as usual. Tonight, he has started stiffening up again (not bending, etc) arching during spit up and spitting up a ton!! But no crying during feeds or even arching during the feeds. Just gas like and fidgety symptoms then. We’re thinking of starting the prevacid again but I just hate him being on it if he doesn’t need it. He did so well for so long without medication and we can’t figure out for the life of us why we’re going backwards. Unfortunately Mylanta never worked for us. Plus, even if it was silent reflux-wouldn’t I hear it going up and down. Or is it an acid in stomach pain kind of thing? . Maybe teething aggravates that? I thought teething was causing the food aversion and the lack of bowel movements causing the stomach discomfort (they’re not hard btw, so I don’t think it’s constipation). I did start hylands which really seem to work. Do you think it’s a lactose thing? I’m only using 2 little pills a day. Who knows-could be a mixture of everything. it’s so confusing!
I’m not worried that much about Ian’s development-it’s just hard to see him lose interest when he feels like this.
Wow! I sure can rant, can’t I??
So has Marisa stopped her curious eating patterns then? Is she still taking the breaks and refusing? Hoping it’s getting better. I always say, Ian ate Nutramagin without any problems-it just caused him pain afterwards. I think I’ve told the board before, but dh always describes it as a deal with the devil. Fix one problem – start another. It’ll probably take awhile for system to get back on track-I’m sure the bm’s will catch up soon. Wow – she’s almost 6 months!!! That’s so exciting.
I’ll get the tylenol ready! Cross your fingers.

January 31, 2006 at 6:19 am #345AnonymousInactiveGlad to hear it with the cold. Worried Marisa will have one any day now
since DH had a whopper of one last week and I have a bit of it myself.Maybe time to see a new GI doc and get those tests done so you will
know better what you are dealing with and can then treat more
comfortably? Does your Ped have any GI recommendations? Supposedly the
Cornell team is good but I’ve only heard that by word of mouth.I don’t give Marisa the Hylands anymore. Most people love them but
something in them seemed to bother her – not sure if it were the
lactose or the chamomile (I also have a chamomile/ragweed allergy).Could still be constipation, even if soft. Someone here once posted
about that – forget the details but you may want to do a search.Well she’s still taking breaks and getting gassy – and probably more
gassy on the Alimentum, but I am hoping that’s just her body adjusting
since she is eating well (31 ounces yesterday – up from 26-28 on
Neocate) and seems happy otherwise. If her constipation doesn’t
regulate itself though, we are going to have to see a new GI doc about
that – but our Ped wants to give it another week or two on the
Alimentum first.Yes – very exciting – but she’s a rolling maniac! Two nights in a row
now she’s rolled onto her tummy in crib and woken up screaming (she
thinks she’s supposed to play/exercise on tummy, not sleep). After
rolling her back onto her side it often takes her an hour or more to
fall back asleep. Hopefully she learns to like tummy sleeping soon.
Plus she rolled in there so much that she got her leg above the crib
bumper and stuck in the rails. Didn’t hurt her but definitely scared
her. She seems really close to crawling (or creeping anyway) too.Good luck today – keep us posted. Dreading Marisa’s 6 months shots in a couple of weeks.
