Painful BMs and gas

My 7 month old daughter has always had gas and explosive BMs . This got a little better when we switched to Nutramigen. The GI brought to my attention that she is taking way to long to make a BM.

I couldn’t believe that i never noticed the correlation between her being really fussy for at least an hour gnawing on her hands and crunching into a ball on the floor, or rocking sometimes she will whimper or let out a few screams until it passes.

I guess i always thought that this was normal? or reflux related… I don’t know i feel really guilty about it now! They put her on Milk of Magnesia to loosen the stools to make it easier for her to get them out but she still takes a long time to evacuate them. She even will scream when she passes gas.

now i know this isn’t normal, but does anybody else have a child with a condition like this?

You know, Bryce had these exact same symptoms when we were fortifying his breastmilk with formula for extra calories. We went through many different formulas and eventually ended up switching to powdered goat’s milk to fortify the breastmilk. Once we switched to this his gas and bm problems completely disappeared. So I’m wondering if Emily is having problems tolerating even the Nutramigen? Maybe you could give Neocate a try?

she’s not too old for neocate is she? It’s been suggested before but since she wasn’t throwing up or spitting up off of it i thought nutramigen wasn’t an issue. I’ll ask the GI about it, but oooh the cost of neocate…

she’s not to old for neocate, but it might be hard for her to take it- if you do go this route you can slooowly add it to her nutrimigen bottles over a period of time, slowly replacing it w/ neocate- as for it being expensive, thre are ways for it to be covered by insurance-

My DS kinda does this…he grunts, screams, strains even for gas and soft bm’s…..hoping he outgrows it eventually.
