We just got back from the GI appointment. Basically, she told me what I have discovered through trial and error on my own. Owen is very intolerant to milk and soy protein. She said to breastfeed as long as possible with my modified diet and to ignore anyone else that says anything different. She explained how things will be much harder if we switch to formula. She does want us to try Alimentum again to see how he tolerates it incase we do have to switch because of my supply. She told me to call my OBGYN and ask for a Regalon(sp?) perscription to try to help boost my supply. * I didn’t know anything about this, so I was excited to hear it could help.
Owen has to go back again in a month to see how we are doing. She didn’t change his reflux meds because she thinks the problem is mostly aggrivated because of how sensitive his digestive system is. We are not suppose to start any solids until at least 6 months. She expects to see him being allregic to things. She also predicted that we won’t be able to start cow’s milk until 18 months of age. At 12 months we will go to rice milk.
The big change we have to make comes with feeding. She said as long as he eats 12oz a day she is happy with it (this seemed crazy to me). I have been feeding him atleast 10 times a day to get him to eat 20oz. Now we are not suppose to let him snack. We are suppose to offer him a bottle every 3 hours during the day and let him eat what he wants from it. She thinks the eating is behavioral because he was experiencing pain previously while he ate. Now he isn’t, but the bad habits are still there.
I’m prepared to have a very cranky baby while we adjust to the new schedule. Ultimately,I will try to stick to it, but if he is really hungry… I am going to feed him regardless. I know that I can atleast stop trying to feed him constantly, and that is a relief in itself! 🙂
