Brief history: I have an almost 3 year old daughter (with global developmental delays) that’s been struggling with silent reflux. From 3 months to about 1.5 years old she was on Zantac and, when that stopped working, she was placed on Prilosec. She was on Prilosec for about a year before we weaned her off. After six weeks of being off the medication, her usual reflux symptoms came back – back arching, very aggressive behavior, biting, self-gagging (to make herself throw up), wanting to be elevated while falling asleep, coughing while crying. Her pediatrician put her back on the Zantac and we are in the 2 week waiting period to see if that will help her.
About five months ago, my daughter had an EGD done to see if she has had any damage from her on-going reflux issues (she didn’t) and she was supposed to have a 24 hour pH probe put in while she was under sedation. We were told that three different people tried to put in the probe in her nose (both sides), but they couldn’t get pass the bend. The doctor suggested that maybe her anatomy was slightly different considering her genetic condition. So, without that pH study, it’s hard to definitively say if she still has her silent reflux issues. (She has speech delays so she’s unable to tell us.) Both her GI doctor and her pediatrician seem to think her behavior issues is more behavioral rather than due to reflux (especially since her EGD came back normal). Does anyone know of any other pH tests that can be done without using a nasal probe? It would be be nice to find out once and for all if she indeed still has reflux issues.
Thanks.
