My in-laws live in Dallas and I live in Wilmington, N.C. It has been very difficult to see a specialist in Wilmington and so far, we have only seen a nurse practitioner associated with UNC Hospital at a satellite office in our area. Jackson has had a barium swallow test and the results were normal. However, his reflux is not letting up and he is 9 months old. I feel like he has not truly been evaluated by a competent doctor with extensive knowledge of GERD. Our pediatricians have been very young and inexperienced, and they have not given us any really good advice.
I am thinking of making a trip to Dallas, staying with my in-laws and seeing a real specialist while I am there. First of all, do y’all think that it will be worth it? Is there anything that they could do for me or is this just a wait and see thing? Jackson has never been allergy tested and his only real symptom is the excessive reflux (he does choke on formula and gag on solids). Our family does have a history of allergies and some food allergies. He is well medicated- 30 mg prevacid (we got that dose from a family doc). I just feel like I need to talk to a true expert. Someone who will look closely at Jackson, determine if any further diagnostics are necessary and give us a plan of action. Any advice? Am I jumping the gun? If not, who would you all go to if you had just one shot at a doc in Dallas?

& I would check out the thread ‘Finding a GI’ that’s at the top of the post, here:May 31, 2008 at 1:55 pm #51982AnonymousInactiveAnother option might be looking elsewhere in NC so that you aren’t having to travel so far. I am sure there is someone in Greenville ( I went to school there and the hospital is huge) and if not.. Bensmama (Naomi) is in Winston Salem so she might be able to recommend someone there that way you aren’t having to go so far from home. Just a thought.

We saw Dr Jae-Koo (Jack) An in Dallas-I found his name on this site, and was very glad that we did. He hooked us up with the right meds (we hope-it’s still new for us), but he also is getting us scheduled for a suck/swallow study (because we choke and gag as well) much faster that our current pediatrician ever seemed to be inclined to do so. However, I can tell you as a Dallasite-it takes a while to get the study scheduled-so be prepared to stick around for a week or two…But back to the choking/gagging-at least for us-he thinks it is completely unrelated to the reflux and not a significantly serious issue. Of course-try telling me that when she’s choking! We’ll know more next week when we do the study.-ShellieBBerrysMom2008-08-06 12:21:39
