My 9wk old twin boys have been on Nutramigen for 8 days.
They showed some improvement in eczema but still can take 45-60mins to finish a 3oz bottle or they fall asleep before they finish or they are screaming & writhing while trying to finish 3oz & don’t finish. Sometimes they finish & they are fine. They also still spit up a bunch at some feedings. Sometimes it appears the entire 3oz. Rarely if ever can I get them to take 4oz. Sometimes they barely get 20oz.
They just switched from Zantac to Prilosec 2 days ago.
How long do you give a formula a try & expect continued improvement? Im also battling with ins. co to cover cost. I will go broke paying for formula for twins. Im expecting my Ped to say try Neocate next week @ 2m appt.
I’m losing my mind over this….
September 15, 2011 at 7:20 pm #69042hellbenntKeymasterHi & welcome!
hugs!there’s a lot to read/learn, but soon you will be a pro!please please give the zantac as you wait two weeks for the prevacid to show it’s full effects. If you do not give the zantac along w/ the prevacid then it’s as if there not on any medication at all. do not just take my word on this! read all you can!you must space the zantac and the prevacid 4hrs apart.you also need to learn about proper zantac doseZantac dosing– my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8288&PN=1
and then learn about not only proper prevacid DOSE but proper FORM of prevacid:Prevacid 101;
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1as for formula change- this too, takes two weeks…here is a thread (topic w/ posts) about how to get insurance to cover:
https://www.infantreflux.org/forums/topic/going-to-the-top/goinghang in there!it’s a lot to research but soon you’ll be helping others and TELLing your doctors what your babies need!hellbennt2011-09-15 19:21:02
September 28, 2011 at 9:12 am #69111AnonymousInactiveI would like to know an update for you when you have one. I have a 10 week old boy in the same boat. I just got him eating 3oz, he wouldn’t take more 2oz a feeding. we are awaiting our shipment of neocate. but feedings are horrible and take forever. when he was on sensitive formula he sucked it down 4oz at a time and that was 3 weeks ago. unfortunately we found out he is milk protein sensitive and on the nutramagin he is starting to have the same symptoms as well. He is on zantac for silent reflux which developed from the thinner formula.
September 28, 2011 at 9:22 am #69112AnonymousInactiveWe never switched to Neocate.
Their eczema is pretty much gone.
They still spit up bunches. The biggest change I made was switching them to feedings every 4 hrs instead of 3. I think they were just not hungry @ 3 hrs. I figured smaller amts more often would be better for reflux & Im concerned with them gaining enough weight.
Once I switched to feeding them every 4 hrs its usually back to 20 mins bottles though sometimes if they are not that interested it can take 30 mins. They are also on Prilosec now from Zantac and arent screaming during feedings.
September 28, 2011 at 9:32 am #69113AnonymousInactiveThanks for the quick update. We vary on feedings I try to do it on demand but sometimes he wants it every 2 hours still, I think because he is only taking 2oz. at a time and sometimes 3oz. He only screams at the end of feedings if he has to do poop, which is pretty much every bottle. He has been on probiotics for 3 weeks now too as well as the nutramagin. But he is congested and sneezing and puffy eyed…so I think our biggest issue is the allergy and the reflux is a side effect of the thinner formula. He seems to be alright with the reflux on the zantac, he used to scream the minute the formula would hit the belly and now that doesn’t happen since he has had the zantac in him consistently.
September 28, 2011 at 9:57 am #69115AnonymousInactiveI also give them 2 tsps of cereal in every bottle 4oz bottle.
I feel like my boys rarely care about food.
Ya the Nutramigen has helped them a lot, but know it tastes horrible.
Ya the poop is insane on it though, now they have constant rashes from pooping so much.
Its taken over 3wks for their eczema to go away & it still comes back slightly here & there.September 28, 2011 at 4:48 pm #69124hellbenntKeymasterbest EXPLANATION OF FOOD ALLERGIES/INTOERANCES and their RELATION TO REFLUX that I have found, to date: 2nd post: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=2
