My son has been on Prevacid solutabs 15mg per day for over two weeks now and Nutramigen for over a week. The reflux symptoms seem better but he now has a rash on one side of his face again? Could this be a milk allergy? I would say his stomach is better on Nutramigen but not great.
He is not napping unless held and he wakes frequently at night and will not go back to sleep after 4am. (I do have the mattress elevated) I am just at a loss because the pedi did not test him for a milk allergy but they said he does have the symptoms for an allergy.
I guess my question is: what are they symptoms of milk allergy, and should I try an elemental formula such as neocate?
Thanks for your responses
October 19, 2009 at 7:40 pm #64311hellbenntKeymasterthe rash would concern me. if you haven’t changed detergents, etc, and your gut feeling is that it’s the formula, then you can try neocate. you can even get your insurance to cover it.
have you checked the prevacid dose at http://www.marci-kids.com?
are you giving in two doses?
are you giving it on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later?you cannot do any accurate testing for allergies at this age. well, if things don’t improve, an endoscopy can be done and they take tiny biopsies and if there are EOS cells present, then this can point to an allergy.
also, have you had diaper tested for occult blood (blood you cannot see)? if there was blood in the stool this too could point to allergy. otherwise, it might ‘just’ be an intolerance…the differences b/t allergy and intolerance: go to Groupie Intro, click on ‘main’ MSPI link and once there go to page 2…October 19, 2009 at 7:45 pm #64313AnonymousInactiveCouldn’t have said it better myself! I agree with everything Laura said.
October 19, 2009 at 7:55 pm #64318AnonymousInactiveI was wondering why they couldn’t just test him for an allergy? I am giving the prevacid on an empty stomach at least 30 min before a meal, twice daily. I just don’t know what it is at this point. It seemed like he did better on the nutramigen for a while and now we are back to bad sleeping and tummy aches.
The rash is so minor its like little pin pricks on his cheeks, neck, and back. But it was gone on his face for about a week and now it is back today? I have a couple of cans of elecare i think i might try.
thanks for the advice!
October 19, 2009 at 8:03 pm #64320hellbenntKeymasterany formula change you make, or any change at all really, you must give a good two weeks…so if you’re trying elecare you’ll need to give it a good two weeks…now, of course if the rash disappears right away then it’s a sign, lol! but you still need to give it two weeks…
as for allergy testing: it’s just not accurate under the age of two (and barely accureate then, lol. ok no lol)
if you have any zantac you can give that, too, making sure to space it 4hrs from the prevacid. we can help you figure out the dose…October 19, 2009 at 10:14 pm #64326AnonymousInactiveto add to what Laura said about the allergy part… most babies don’t really have allergies to milk or soy it is just an intolerance and they can’t test for that. And the part about allergy testing not being accurate until a certain age is sooo true. My son is allergic to eggs we found out at 18 months and just had it reconfirmed last week via skin prick for his flu shot. Good ped allergist will not test for food allergies before the age of 1, most like to wait until age 2 and then age 3 for environmental. HTH.
