hey J 🙂 don’t worry, there are not any decisions you are making that can’t be reversed :)… i never did soy, because the doc put him right to the alimentum because a lot of babys are allergic to soy too… my husband was on soy and my mom said she thinks i didnt tolerate milk too well either now that she looks back on it.. but the only symptom shane has of mspi was crying all the time.. which could of been from the reflux anyhow.. soo i am not sure.. but i know that your son will get better like mine did.. i think i would try the RTF for atleast a couple of weeks if i were you, but only you know what to do, if you think the soy is helping with his crying than stick with it, it sure is cheaper ;)… and also the alimentum didnt help my son with the reflux, but i think it did with his colicky symptoms, if it did help at all … with the PEPCID, it is prescibed from the doctor, just like zantac, not the chewables.. its very safe, and really has helped along side of the prevacid.
well stick in there.. it will pass soon~ its either the meds or the formula that you can change, and your bound to find out which will help…
November 2, 2006 at 8:49 pm #17114AnonymousInactiveyou have to get the pepcid from the pharmacy with a prescription, because it is different than the OTC kind. and you also wouldnt know how many mg to give a baby as their are no directions on there for infant use. i know a mom on here tried the zantac that was OTC and it did nothing for her baby.
also when my son was on alimentum i added beechnut rice cereal to it to thicken it up.November 2, 2006 at 8:50 pm #17115AnonymousInactivelauren –
two questions. the first may be because i am so tired (4 months with no sleep really fries the brain cells)….was does “RTF” stand for? i know i am going to be like “duh” as soon as you tell me, but i cannot figure it out for the life of me right now!
finally, where can i find info to back-up the pepcid request when i see my doc tomorrow. thanks!

colicky symotoms=reflux. so if it helped then it did help the reflux, because if they cant tolerate regular formula, then the milk proteins iwill damage their GI tract and aggrivates reflux. a formula like alimentum will stop the GI damage and control the reflux.

November 2, 2006 at 9:16 pm #17118AnonymousInactivehi tracy,
i have been currently thinking about if he needs the alimentum.. we put him on it around the same time as we upted his prevacid.. about a couple weeks into it he was a very happy.. what i meant by not helping the reflux, is that he has been still very refluxy, like waking up and quirming all night, short naps, and acidic spit up. even though he has been good (crying wise) there has still been acid symptoms.. ( if that makes any sence). so, i thought that colic can exist on its own, and be different then reflux, because my husband was a colicky baby, and didnt have reflux (at least not that they knew of).. sooooo i thought the alimentum has helped him more with tummy problems, or just with digesting the formula better…(if it has helped).. because he has still been refluxing. soo, that is why the doc just added pepcid. and he seems a little better.. the doc and i both am not sure if he needs the alimentum, so we are going to try and get him on the goodstart next week, and see how it goes… does this make sense? let me know what you think
and to J~ tracie anwered the ready to feed and pepcid question.. i am not sure where to get info from, i do know its an H2 blocker drug and the prevacid is a PPI, and sometimes babys need both..

haha
my name is Natalia, and my sons name is Trace. you must of thought i was Tracy by accident?anyway, i have done much research on the subject and my pediatrician concurs that “colic” is, about 99% of the time either reflux, or some sort of MIlk/ soy protein allergy or intolerance, or both. You see, babies cry for a reason.
Back in the day, they labeled babies as “colicky” because they had no real answers.
i absolutely refuse to listen to any doctor that tells me my son is “colicky” and i just have to wait it out.
Now that he is on zegerid and NEocate, he is no longer “colicky”
its a bunch of bologna.
nataliachick72006-11-2 21:29:57November 2, 2006 at 9:31 pm #17123AnonymousInactiveJohanna,
Yes, I’ve read that too. That there can be break through acid with PPI use, and sometimes an H2 blocker is needed in addtion to the PPI for that reason. Sorry, I can’t find any of the links but I’m sure the doc has heard of break through acid….and hopefully will let you try some Pepcid for it.
