Aidan still has the ear infections, and he got his 6 month shots on thursday…Since then he has been not himself..he is running a low fever off and on, 100.8ish, not really that high, but he’s just miserable. His reflux is really acting up, today at the pool, I THINK he refluxed and choked on it, all of the sudden he tried to cry but nothing came out, his face turned really red and afterwards he had the tell tale “reflux boogers” as I call them, in his nose (white, obviously milk)…(not entirely sure the husband didn’t accidently let his face get in the water)I’m not sure if it’s the strong antibiotic, the shots, the ear infection or what…Would he still be having a little reaction to the shots 4 days later? shouldn’t the antibiotic have knocked the ear infection and the pain out by now? (it’s augmenton, amoxicilan didn’t work) no new food or anything…sleeps fine, at night that is he refuses to sleep during the day except catnaps,..just generally miserable during the day..not screaming or anything but just not himself…not sure if I should take him back to the dr or wait a few more days… He’s still eating fine as well…sometimes he just kind of looks “not there” stares into space for a few seconds…
Aidansmom79 2006-6-11 21:8:10 June 11, 2006 at 9:10 pm #9575AnonymousInactiveI’d take him back to the doc to make sure he’s okay, but I’m kind of paranoid that way. Hope he’s feeling better soon.
June 11, 2006 at 9:46 pm #9578AnonymousInactiveohh I understand the being paranoid…I’m that way too, so much so that I think the dr’s are sick of seeing me!! I think I will bring him in tomorrow..just to make sure everything’s ok…ty lori, I remember that hailey had/has a cold?? is she any better?
June 12, 2006 at 6:04 am #9581AnonymousInactiveJill,
Did the doc give him his shots while he was on antibiotics and while he had the ear infection?
June 12, 2006 at 7:38 am #9582AnonymousInactiveJill – sounds like it could be a reaction to the shots, especially if
they gave them to him while he was already sick/on antibiotics. My
doctor won’t even do the shots if M has a bad cold, let alone
infection. I’d definitely take him to get checked out and I hope he
feels better soon.June 12, 2006 at 9:25 am #9593AnonymousInactiveI hope Aidan is feeling better. My doctor also will not give shots if the kids have any kind of infection. It’s so hard to tell what’s wrong when you have so many things going on at once; the ears, the shots, the reflux. I’d definitely take him back to the doctor. Maybe he’ll need yet another antibiotic. Some of these strains are so resistant, and I recently heard that some ear infections are viral.
Good luck and keep us posted.
June 12, 2006 at 4:13 pm #9636AnonymousInactiveI’ve been thinking about Aidan and I hope he is feeling better. I would definitely take him back to the doc. And yes, a child can have reactions from the shots up to 2+ weeks. I believe the DTaP is the one that can cause reactions for a lengthy period of time. Also, I would question your doc as to why he gave the vaccinations when Aidan had an infection. Most docs wont give the shots if the child is sick and especially if they’re on antibiotics.
Please let us know how he is doing.
June 12, 2006 at 4:37 pm #9639AnonymousInactivehe’s seems a bit better, for some insane reason the office is closed today? Fever is gone but still a bit of diarreah. As for the shots on antibiotics, she said it was fine as long as they don’t have a very high fever or something along those lines, Aidan hasn’t had a fever due to the ear infections (and side note, he’s whining now and the 6 year old just looked at me and very pointedly said “give Aidan some respect” toooo funny) I think it was/is from the shots, I remembered he got like this at his 4 month visit 2..thanks for all the support guys, I’m still going to take him in tomorrow to make sure the new antibiotic is kicking the ear infection out. I asked the dr if it was alright to still give the shots and she said it was fine, I trust her judgement on things like that (so far) as even though I had issues with how she terated his little not eating spell, she WAS right that he would increase the intake himself, and he’s been on 30 mgs prevacid since he was 2ish months old! I am also thinking the clinginess is becoming behavioral as I have been spoiling him cause he has been sick and now he starts whining if someone is not paying attention to him!! So, all in all I think he’s on the right track, reflux is still worse than before, but not bad enough to cause me to worry. I’ll post again after the appointment tomorrow!
June 12, 2006 at 6:09 pm #9643AnonymousInactiveI’m glad he’s feeling better. I was worried about him having a reaction from the shots, especially since he is already sick with ear infections. Noah had a moderate local reaction to the DTaP. He’s at a higher risk now of having a more serious systemic reaction, therefore, we have postponed that series for now.
Let us know how the appt. goes tomorrow and how he is doing.
June 19, 2006 at 3:57 pm #10077AnonymousInactiveHey all, at the appt, Aidan’s right ear was STILL infected, the next day however, when I brought my son in for his visit, I had the other doc (the head doc) chek it again b/c we were going out of town, and she said it had cleared up..Everything seems ok now except for the annoying lingering rattle in his chest and him coughing up whatever was doing the rattleing (I’m thinking mucus), and I’m begining to think that he aspirates on his bottles..but they’re already thickened so not much I can do about that, and he doesn’t seem bothered by it all that much…(has an appt next week, another ear re-check I’m going to ask about aspiration and breathing through his mouth then) ty all so much you guys really are my saving grace sometimes!!!
June 19, 2006 at 9:19 pm #10086AnonymousInactiveUGH, I just posted but lost it!
What makes you think he’s aspirating?
June 20, 2006 at 9:05 am #10099AnonymousInactiveHi, just a quick note on the ear infection/antibiotic thing. Augmenton is a VERY strong antibiotic so if that does not clear up an infection then it is probably viral. Or a back up of reflux “junk” but not an actual bacteria.
I know you said that the ears had cleared up but I just wanted to add that for future reference and for other readers. We have to be carful with giving these little ones too many of the “best” antibiotics cuz if they develop a resistance they will be in big trouble in the future.
June 20, 2006 at 3:40 pm #10149AnonymousInactivewell, not really SURE he is Lori, but the rattling then coughing thing has been going on so long that I don’t think it’s a cold, he DID have a cold for about 2 weeks before memorial day( which is when the chest congestion started) with the same rattling/coughing buisness but then he also had the snot fountain going. Now, there’s no cold symptoms just the annoying rattle, it does get worse after he eats which is why I think it might be aspiration, but it’s basically a round the clock thing..sort of sounds like a constant chest cold, then he coughs hard for a few secs and the “rattling” quits. Could also be environmental allergies, we live in georgia, pollen and allergy capital of the world-lol I don’t know anyone who lives here for a year or more who doesn’y have to take at least an otc allergy med..think it’s also teething related maybe? just covering the bases really tp make sure it’s just an annoyance rather than a problem. If it’s just allergies or an asthma thing I can deal with that, both the older one and I have asthma. Eh at least it doesn’t seem to bother HIM to much it’s just driving me nuts trying to figure it out!!!
June 20, 2006 at 3:42 pm #10150AnonymousInactiveKatey, yep I hear you, my 6 year old is immune to amoxicilian!!!! and aparently this one may be 2? too bad I used to LOVE the “bubble gum medicine”-lol
June 20, 2006 at 3:56 pm #10152AnonymousInactiveJill, does he choke on the bottle? Hailey also sounds a lot like Aidan with the reflux rattle…we were told it was because of refluxing during eating and not aspiration. We took her to an SLP who did a swallow assessment. Not sure if this is true, but we were also told that after 6 months (which is when we saw the SLP), that if she were aspirating she would have had chest infections/pneumonia by that point. In Aidan’s case, if he was aspirating on such thick liquid that would be even more uncommon. Not trying to discourage you, just put your mind more at ease. But I do think that it’s worth looking into it since he has reflux. Hope he feels better soon.
