HI- I have a 8 week old daughter who has reflux, lots of spitting up and vomiting in the beginning. Currently that is decreased with zantac and reglan (3ml of Z 2x a day and R 4x a day), however she cries a LOT of the day like someone is cutting off her legs with a chainsaw…. she also only sleeps about 1-2 hours in the day at best- nights are usually pretty good after I get her down, about midnight.
The pain she is in is heartbreaking- I called the dr. and he has scheduled an barium swallow to see the severity of the problem.
I am exclusively breastfeeding and have made the changes to elevated bed, holding upright and all that. She doesnt cry right after or during feedings, its about 30 minutes after her feeding.
I’m interested in this mspi…. tonight for the first time she has slept, its been amazing!! I did realize though, after having the time to actually spend researching reflux b/c she wasnt crying, that i havent had cereal the last 3 mornings- I usually always do, but my moms here so its been eggs and oatmeal. I know that i have had some milk products but a definite decrease from the usual. Is this just conincidince or could it be mspi?????
I’ve seen no blood or mucus which seems to be an indicator so I’m just not sure….
If anyone can help i would love it- i guess its toast in the morning to see if that helps, of course with no butter
Thanks so much

Im new to the boards but not to MSPI. 3 out of our 4 children are MSPI kids, with our new addition just arriving Jan 3rd. I am currently on the MSPI diet so I can nurse. Since you are not seeing blood or mucus in the stools you might not be dealing with MSPI she might just be lactose intolerant. Your best bet is to go ahead and start eliminating things from your diet and start with dairy products. You have to be careful though because there are alot of dairy products in things that you wouldnt think would have dairy. You’ll need to read ingredients lists to make sure. I suggest going to this website http://www.mspiguide.com/helpfulinfo1.cfm which gives you a list of stuff to stay away from. It is hard but not impossible. I have checked fast food websites for their ingredients list to see what I can have, like Taco Bell hard shell tacos, w/ no cheese, and I add tomato. But some places add soy to their beef for a filler, so you need to check each place you go.Hope this helps some!January 25, 2008 at 2:14 pm #47692AnonymousInactiveFrom what I understand the fussing about 1/2 hour later is a pretty good indicator of some sort of intolerance. I would definitely try cutting out the milk and see what happens. It can take up to two weeks for the offending proteins to be out of your system, but if you have noticed her getting better after just a decrease in your milk intake, then she should turn around quickly. Good luck. I hope you can figure it out!
January 25, 2008 at 3:33 pm #47696AnonymousInactiveThanks for replying and for the information. We did have an upper GI this week which showed her refluxing- SO with mspi or lactose intolerance do babies reflux or does it just cause painful digestion?????
Also how do they test or do they for mspi/lactose intolerance????I know I read about taking a biospy of the intestinal tract to test for mspi, but that seems so invasive, or is it just by eliminating things in your diet and making the diagnosis on your own???WOW this is overwhelming and confusing- thanks for your supportive words and information.Heres hoping for a good weekend for everone!Georgia mommyJanuary 25, 2008 at 8:26 pm #47709hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!

Mine has never had bad diapers as a symptom but definitely has MSPI. A good list of symptoms for MSPI can be found at http://www.thepicfoundation.org.
Your little one’s reflux could be a hand-in-hand problem with her MSPI or her reflux could be a separate issue. One common sign of a failed food challenge or accidental eating of some milk/soy in mom’s diet is a flare up of reflux symptoms, I’ve found. A rash and sleep disturbances are also other common MSPI signs. The list on the http://www.mspiguide.com/helpfulinfo1.cfm link mentioned earlier as well as the forum shown on the http://www.mspiguide.com home page are both excellent sources of help when trying to change your diet to determine what is causing your little one problems.February 9, 2008 at 11:01 am #48141AnonymousInactiveNo blood/mucous in the stool here either, but lots of yeast infections. My son was getting them constantly until we cut out dairy. Also, it took 3 weeks to make a difference, rather than 2. I had tried going dairy free for 2 weeks while BF’ing and it didn’t work, but when we switched to hypo formula after 3 weeks we saw a difference. It might help to try at least 3-4 weeks to be sure.
February 9, 2008 at 6:38 pm #48148AnonymousInactiveMy son had blood in stool and also had the biopsy done. I would say that I know you are scared to go the more invasive route, but my son got to be very sick and ended up not eating at all for the most part and didn’t gain weight and had to have a feeding tube and it was a HUGE mess!! He associated pain with eating, so eventually he just stopped eating. If your doc suggests the scope, I would go with it. It was very quick and we knew within a week the results so I could say okay, this is what I’m dealing with.
After 4 mo, I had lost weight, my hair was falling out and I was an emotional mess b/c I was so beside myself after such a long time of not figuring it out. Don’t let that happen to you or your baby. You are on the right track by eliminating, but it may take a few weeks to really see great results, but it sounds like you might be seeing something with the sleep! And we all love sleep!!!February 12, 2008 at 4:41 pm #48173AnonymousInactiveThanks for the links and info.
I’m still not seeing blood in the stool but its still green some, smelly, and a bit mucousy. The prevacid appears to be helping more than the zantac- I havent started eliminating the dairy and soy yet b/c i wanted to give the meds a good chance to start working. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since the change- I guess by the end of the week if its not better I’ll be saying bye-bye to my cheerios. She has had 2 good days in a row, oh how my hopes soared but yesterday and today have been a bit rough ( but still not as bad as some earlier days).I did want to say to Erica I’m so sorry that things had to progress that far, I cant understand why doctors arent more up on the info., why shoulld you have to wait 4 months for answers???I am interested in the biopsy- so it is able to give a positive or negative mspi result? and was it a ped. gi specialist who performed it?I plan on asking our ped. for a referral, unfornately the small town where we live does not have one, so i’m not sure where we will have to go.thanks again, the links are great info.February 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm #48189AnonymousInactiveMy doc was just not very progressive and I was partly to blame for not demanding to see someone else, but I was exhausted and had a 2 1/2 yr old to take care of also. It all just progressed until we finally were admitted to a children’s hospital by a ped GI and I had an answer within 5 days.Have to had diapers tested for occult blood? You won’t be able to see blood in the stool, it’s microscopic blood. The scope just showed in my son bleeding in the lining of the intestines which meant he was not tolerating milk proteins from my breastmilk. It was the ped GI that performed it. We ulimately waited so long to see one and they get me in as an “emergency” and we were admitted that day. It’s a much longer story than that, but that’s it in a nutshell. I just want to save you from some of the things that I went through.February 12, 2008 at 8:39 pm #48190AnonymousInactiveOh and to give you a light at the end of the tunnel, my son weighed 10 1/2 lbs at 4 mo and was developmentally behind with everything because of all of this. He is now a 21 1/2 lb fireball who walks and runs and babbles like crazy and he eats everything we eat!!
