i had a horrible check up..
shane hasnt gained weight in 3 months!!he weighs 24. 4 pounds….and is 20 mos. old.is this really low??not sure what to do about it. i think the fact that he doesnt have whole milk doesnt help. but.. still.and i am going to a new ped GI.. hopefully he can shed some light.. our current one just wants to put him on a antihistamine and make his appetite stronger.. but i think he missed the part when i said that he eats just fine .February 21, 2008 at 11:01 pm #48488AnonymousInactiveMy sitter’s son did not gain ONE SINGLE OUNCE during his entire second year of life! Granted, he was very very chubby at one year old and now is a slim little boy but it’s not unheard of. Weight gain should slow down in the 2nd year of life.
I think it’s good you’re going to see a new ped GI though to get some answers. Hopefully they’ll tell you everything is fine…or at least offer some solutions. You have struggled so much with his intolerances and trying to find foods for him. I’d hate for you to have something else now to worry about too. GOOD LUCK!
February 22, 2008 at 1:39 pm #48503AnonymousInactiveIt can be very normal to have the weight gain slow down at that age. If he eats very well then it may just be that he is just going to be thin due to genetics. Also did your dr do a height to weight ratio? They do that with Isaac when he sees the feeding team at the hospital.
February 22, 2008 at 2:30 pm #48509AnonymousInactiveumm i am not sure what a height to weight ratio would be.. but they did take his height..and he is 50% for height..and i think 20% for weight.
February 24, 2008 at 11:00 am #48543AnonymousInactiveHey lauren, I’m just now getting to this.. Sorry to hear about Shane, but I know it is true that they really slow at weight gain that second year. I would guess Ben hasn’t gained much either, as he has really thinned out quite a bit.
However, if you are worried, have you thought about coconut milk? I ask because a friend of mine has a 1 year old who is allergic to everything.. seriously, all the big ones.. milk, soy, eggs, wheat, nuts, corn, you name it.. Anyway, he is drinking a mixture of rice milk and coconut milk. I think his mom said she adds 8 oz. of coconut milk to 32 ouz. of rice milk. She said that her son gained 4 lbs. in about a month or so!Anyway, just a thought …February 24, 2008 at 12:40 pm #48544AnonymousInactivethanks naomi.. i will def. go and pick some up! i totally forgot about that.. and have been meaning to try it.. thanks for reminding me.. i’ll let you know how it goes!
February 24, 2008 at 10:22 pm #48559AnonymousInactiveGood idea Naomi! I’ve heard of adding the coconut milk as well. It’s full of good fats. Doesn’t taste real great by itself so mixing an 8 oz can into a larger jug with some rice or goat’s milk would be great for added fat and calories. Just FYI Lauren, it is common for coconut milk to seperate so you will really need to mix it well every time you serve it. It develops a thick white almost solid “fat” on top and a thin “water” on the bottom. I didn’t know that the first time I used it and wondered if it had gone bad or something!
March 14, 2008 at 4:15 pm #49003AnonymousInactiveYou could also buy some unrefined coconut oil usually found in whole food or natural food stores and put some on his bread, popcorn, and so on. It is better for him than butter which he probably can’t have anyway and like the coconut milk it has all the good fats. Let us know how it goes.
What are Shane’s reactions when he has dairy products? Do you know if he is allergic to them or if it’s just an intolerance? I’m curious about what is going on with Justice and his not being able to have dairy. We just had him tested and they said he is not allergic to dairy, but only did the skin prick test and they didn’t listen to anything I said.March 15, 2008 at 2:16 pm #49022AnonymousInactiveshelby~
his skin prick test came back very very low allergy to dairy and even lower to eggs.i would call it an inolerance.when he has hidden dairy he is o.k (i think).. but whenever i try dairy with him like yogurt for a few days.. or cheese for a few days.. he wakes up crying at night.. several times a night. I have tried this 2 times.. I am going to try again when he turns two.I am thinking of trying soy with him soon.. but i am nervous!March 15, 2008 at 4:09 pm #49029AnonymousInactiveJustice’s test came back no allergy to anything and yet if he has 3 or 4 goldfish he is up all night crying and screaming. We can’t even do one piece of chesse without all night waking and crying. I have no idea what is going on with him. Thankfully we can do soy though.
March 15, 2008 at 8:35 pm #49035AnonymousInactivethe new gi we went to made a point.. she said that if he was intolerant or allergic to dairy or soy.. then he should be having tummy problems about an hour or 2 after eating it.. not just at night. Like if we gave it in the morning.. we should notice something in the morning.. not 12 hours later…
hmm.. all i know is that shane was waking up as well when he had dairy.. coincidence??? i dont know…March 15, 2008 at 9:51 pm #49042AnonymousInactiveI think the GI might not be right on that one… Delayed allergic reactions (IgG mediated) often take hours or even days to show their effect, and sometimes it’s not just a GI effect. IgG reactions often cause inflammation in places other than the gut, like the ears, sinuses, lungs, brain, etc. If the reaction is IgE related (which should show up a skin test) then that would be an immediate type reaction, but IgG related reactions are usually very delayed.
Ben didn’t show a skin reaction to milk either (skin test is IgE) but he showed a significant reaction on the blood test (IgG).March 16, 2008 at 4:58 pm #49051AnonymousInactivewhat is inflamation of the brain??! what does that act/appear like?
March 16, 2008 at 10:54 pm #49062AnonymousInactiveLauren – Ben would wake up screaming hysterically in the middle of the night – absolutely inconsolable (we and his ped now think it was terrible headaches). He would rub his head against things (also headache related). Also he was very irritable, lots of tantrums, etc.
March 17, 2008 at 9:44 am #49074AnonymousInactiveI will tell you guys all of Justice’s symtoms and you ladies can tell me what you think. After he has dairy it is usually later in the day that we can tell a difference not right away. Also usually at night. Anyway, very cranky, runny nose, cough, reflux, up all night even if given benadryl, exzema, mucousy diapers, gassy, and constant scratching especially his bottom and his head. There has been one time that he had a fever, but we’re not sure if that was dairy related or not. We are confused often with Justice. As for the reflux he doesn’t have reflux anymore unless he gets dairy. He apparently gets that from me because I also don’t have reflux unless I have dairy. Justice’smom2008-03-17 09:44:40
