I was denied 30mg of prevacid by our ped for Landen again!!!! He is so congested and I know it is acid.
I was told I could have Reglan instead. Great. How about a drug to empty his stomach out instead of just upping the dose eh?
I was also told that 30mg could cause liver damage. Does Prevacid even cross the liver? Everything I’ve read suggests to me that it goes as far as the small intestine. I want to know what I am talking about when I talk to GI about this on 6/13. HELP!!!
I could just spit nails!
jilly78 2007-5-31 15:37:6 May 31, 2007 at 3:36 pm #35151AnonymousInactiveOh no! I’m so sorry. I’ve never read anything about liver damage. Hopefully one of our pharmacists can comment. Or email Dr. Phillips… I’m sure he’ll give you a description that you can repeat to your ped.
May 31, 2007 at 3:39 pm #35154AnonymousInactiveyes i would email dr phillips. he is the one that called our ped and we got an rx for the appropriate dose. i was however, doing my own dosing before that, because my son was literally on the verge of a feeding averion.
May 31, 2007 at 3:39 pm #35155AnonymousInactiveI agree with Lori…also I have heard some people say that Dr. Phillips has even called Peds for people with the doctor was being…stubborn (I could have said something much worse)
May 31, 2007 at 4:24 pm #35171AnonymousInactiveCarson was on 30mg of Prevacid but then he became neutropenia. So we had to switch to Prilosec. Our Peds GI Spec said that children rarely have any side effects from Prilosec (we are on the generic with beads) even if they are on a larger dose. The neutropenia isn’t a problem until the child gets a cold/ear infection/ etc and then their body won’t be able to fight anything off. It is quite scary so we stopped the Prevacid right away and started the Prilosec. I will add that Carson has always been little and hasn’t weighed more than a wet rag – so that could be why he got this.
May 31, 2007 at 5:13 pm #35172AnonymousInactiveI quickly emailed Dr. Phillips, to which I got a quick reply:
They are making that up about damaging babies livers. This is in an effort to get you to back off of bothering them.
NO reglan – it cause severe side effects in the central nervous system and is not even close to being as safe as Prevacid.
What is his weight now?
Dr Phillips
I am just waiting on a reply since I emailed back with his weight. And I think I may ask for him to call on our behalf. Landen is so congested he can no longer sleep for 5 mins and is pushing the bottle nipple out with his tongue in disgust.jilly782007-5-31 17:14:23

I totally agree!
May 31, 2007 at 8:53 pm #35192AnonymousInactiveI hope Dr. P will call your doctor and get your little guy on the right dose of Prevacid soon.
June 1, 2007 at 3:27 am #35201AnonymousInactivePlease, do let us know what he says. What is Landan’s weight if you don’t mind my asking. Quinn is 21 pounds and the doc says that 22 mg of prevacid is too much for her, but I’ve been doing my own dosing too just like Natalia, just to give her a little relief. I’ve been giving her 30mg of prevacid and 10 mg of pepcid. Plus she is on 1.5ml of Reglan… so I’m curious about what he suggests for Landan. With this dosage, Quinn is doing GREAT with her pain and actually WANTS to eat. But I also never looked up the side effects for what I’m putting into her body and i sure as heck don’t want her to wind up having anymore complications than she already has.
I’m glad that Dr. Phillips was able to email you back.

June 1, 2007 at 8:28 am #35210AnonymousInactiveLanden is 14lbs and 13oz (he is a major comfort feeder) my ped and GI treat him (me) like he is fine b/c he gains weight. I need to videotape feedings and crying spells. You cannot hold this baby without feeling like you could drop him (Sandifers). He is only gaining weight b/c I do not give up during feedings KWIM. It can take an hour to get 4oz in him. He eats best when he is half asleep normally. I know that isn’t good. I guess he is a sleep-feeder or dream-feeder.
30mg may be on the high side. But I figured by the time I got 22.5, he’ll weight 20 lbs and need 30mg and I’ll spend 3 months fighting for that! I will post Dr. Phillips reply as soon as I get it.
Thanks for your replies!
June 1, 2007 at 10:23 am #35238AnonymousInactiveI am one of the ones that Dr. Phillips called my ped. I also did all med increases myself.
June 1, 2007 at 4:32 pm #35288AnonymousInactiveDr Phillips response to Landen’s weight:
SO what is he taking now?
He needs 10mg three times per day
A 30mg prevacid solutab broken into fourths and then give 1/2 and 1/4 of a tablet. And since I cannot get 30mg tablet, he said we could do a half tablet of pepcid complete at night (4 hrs after the solutab) to try and help. If the new GI doesn’t give me the 30mgs on 6/13, I’ll see if Dr. Phillips can call for us.
June 1, 2007 at 4:51 pm #35290AnonymousInactiveThat was the dose that turned things around for Myles. I hope your gi agrees. If not I’d definitely ask Dr. P to call him. It’s worked for some moms here.
I hope the Pepcid complete helps in the meantime. Pepcid complete works great for my reflux and I’ve read of some babies here doing well on it, so hopefully it will work for Landen too.
