Anyone out there whose refluxer has undergone a Nissen and G-tube placement? Our 22 month old daughter has severe reflux and a resulting oral aversion and our 10 month old son also has the same. We hoped that early treatment with a proper dose of prevacid and not ‘forcing’ eating would keep the oral aversion from developing with him, but no such thing. Our neurologist is strongly advising the procedure for our son. We did everything we could to avoid a tube with our daughter…behavioral treatment, ongoing OT and speech therapy, but feeding is still quite difficult. Would help me to hear of anyones’ experiences (positive or negative). THANK YOU!

May 17, 2007 at 7:37 pm #33601AnonymousInactivemy daughter has had a fundo. she did not have a g-tube placed because she had been a good eater—it was only after her surgery that we started having trouble with her eating, but it was caused by esophageal thrush, first, and then tonsil problems we did not realize she had. she had a tube hanging over her head twice during the next year after her surgery, but we managed to get enough weight on her both times and avoid the tube. once her tonsils and adenoids were removed her eating, sleeping and weight problems resolved.
she had her fundo just shortly before she turned 10 months old. she was failure to thrive, anemic, refluxing almost 25% of the time and her esophagus was getting ulcerated. turned out she had a good sized hiatal hernia. she has not had a single complication from her fundo. she is 3 1/2 years old now. i would do the fundo again in a heartbeat.
i have other kids that have had reflux problems and i also have reflux problems. i had a scope done in december which showed i had a fair amount of damage. i hate spending the money on prevacid and i hate having it change the normal ph of my stomach—-i have some other health problems and i can’t help but wonder if i don’t absorb my medication and food properly because of the prevacid. i am considering having a fundo myself so that i don’t have to keep taking the meds.

June 17, 2007 at 11:56 pm #37089AnonymousInactiveMy daughter also had a fundo and gtube placement. This was last October, and she was 7 months old. We haven’t had any issues from the fundo, but Aidan is still FTT, despite the tube feedings.
I also would redo the fundo again in a heartbeat.
