For about a week and a half Bryce has been waking up throughout the night just crying. I can tell that his tummy hurts (and it’s not reflux) and eventually he usually passes gas. The only thing I can think of that might be causing it is is increased intake of solids lately.
Around the last week in February he started eating more baby food (Usually about 1 T a day). Then on March 1 he started eating those Gerber puffs. It wasn’t until a week later (March 7) that he started having this painful gas at night. Every food except the puffs he had had before, but he was eating the puffs for quite awhile before the gas started. So I kind of think it’s just increased solids in general causing it, not a specific food.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to help him? I feel like I’ve tried everything! I’ve tried Mylanta. I’ve tried tummy massage. I’ve tried Mylicon in the past but it always seems to make things worse for Bryce, and I think it’s more for “burping” gas so I hesitate to try it. Anything else I could try? I just feel so bad for him.
Should I maybe hold off on the solids even longer? I really hate to stop them because he’s finally doing so well with them considering his feeding aversion.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
March 18, 2007 at 11:57 am #27739AnonymousInactiveIs he eating the same flavor of puffs each time?
March 18, 2007 at 1:23 pm #27746AnonymousInactiveHe’s been eating two different kinds, but both from the very beginning.
March 18, 2007 at 3:13 pm #27759AnonymousInactiveI don’t have any other suggestions, but I know how much gas hurts our little ones. I recently have begun giving Brodie the gas drops again, because he seems to be gassier than normal, with no dietary changes.
March 18, 2007 at 4:02 pm #27771AnonymousInactiveCan you release the gas through his g-tube? Sorry, can’t remember exactly what it’s called when you do that. Maybe someone on the other site could help in the tube feeding forum?s&h’s mum2007-3-18 16:2:55
March 18, 2007 at 10:45 pm #27791AnonymousInactiveThanks for the suggestion, Lori. It’s called venting. It’s pretty much another way of burping. We do do that to get any air out of his tummy, but it hasn’t helped with this gas. I think his gas is more intestinal gas which venting doesn’t help, unfortunately.
I think I’ll try e-mailing my doctor and see what she thinks.
March 19, 2007 at 9:07 am #27803AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear that Heather. Hope the doc has a better suggestion. Intestinal gas is painful.
March 19, 2007 at 9:36 am #27808AnonymousInactivePoor Bryce. I hope the doctor has a good solution for him.
March 19, 2007 at 10:01 am #27810AnonymousInactiveWhen Carson gets real gassy, our doc says it sometimes is his reflux. He says that when they reflux and it goes up and down, they swollow a lot and that creates extra air in their tummies. ?Just a thought? It took Carson a long time to be able to eat those puffs. He can only tolerate the sweet potatoe ones now. Not sure why. Maybe try cheerios instead? They are a bit tougher to *chew and swollow* but they also mash up pretty easily in their mouths. I wonder if he has an allergy/intolerance to an ingredient – the intolerance in his stomach and intestines actually can cause reflux to occur.
I know you said it was not reflux, so just take all of this with a grain of salt! Moms definately know best. I hope he gets past this stage soon.
March 19, 2007 at 10:31 pm #27884AnonymousInactiveWell Bryce only woke up one time with the gas last night! So I didn’t e-mail the doc yet. I’m going to see what happens in the next night or two. I’m hoping he just needed some time to adjust to the extra solids.
Thanks for the suggestions Brenda. I’m pretty sure it’s not reflux. I can usually tell with him if it’s reflux or gas and by the way he’s acting I’m pretty sure it’s gas this time. I also give him his reflux meds right before bed and have tried Mylanta in the middle of the night with no difference.
I was also wondering if it could be an intolerance to something in the puffs. Unfortunately he can’t eat the cheerios. So far he’s only been able to eat things that dissolve pretty well. Well, we’ll see what tonight brings! I might just try stopping the puffs for awhile if it continues.
March 20, 2007 at 11:25 am #27926AnonymousInactiveHeather, walmart makes their own brand of the puffs and they have different flavours (at least in Canada). Maybe some of the ingredients are different?
March 20, 2007 at 11:48 am #27930AnonymousInactiveThat’s a good idea, Lori. I’ll have to check out the ingredients on the other brand.
