After getting Elizabeth on a comfortable dose of Prevacid, she’s been a smiley, happy baby. Our only issue? Chronic diarrhea for the past 8 weeks.
At first, we thought it was a stomach bug or she was getting sick. Then we thought maybe it was just runny…so we tried thickening it–with bad results. After many consultations with the pediatrician and two special diaper creams, I finally called our GI. Given the fact that it’s mucousy, stringy, and green (even on the Nutramigen), she is highly suspicious of a milk allergy and started us on Neocate. We are sending off a stool sample to check for any “bugs,” but don’t expect to find anything. The GI said we should see some results in a about a week. What have your experiences been? I’m glad I read about Neocate on here before we started–the poop does smell TERRIBLE. It’s definately stinky and dark, but the consistency hasn’t changed yet–still stringy. When should I expect the constipation to set in? We had to use Karo syrup with Owen, so I’m familiar with that route–just want to have enough on hand. Also, how many kids on Neocate outgrow their food intolerance/allergy issues? Owen did by a year, but he was on Nutramigen. Should I pretty much expect that she’s going to have true allergies? (We’ll have her tested for sure, but I like having an idea of what to expect.)Thanks for your help! I just want this little girl’s bottom to feel better!March 30, 2008 at 7:40 pm #49626AnonymousInactiveEvie was never constipated on Neocate. She always only had about one BM a day though. I supplemented with Breast milk for a while but never experienced a huge difference in the amount of poops once she was on just Neocate.
I’ll bet a week is a good amount of time to see a change at least in the consistency.Evie does not seem to have a negative reaction to any foods right now and she just turned 13 mos. Although, with too much dairy, it becomes an issue. She is good with hidden dairy, and yogurt and cheese is tolerated in small doses. She was able to do the “easy” solids at 6 months, we used Earth’s Best Oatmeal for cereal with great success, and then at 9 months, she did Cheerios fine too. Wheat doesn’t seem to be an issue at all, but I am weary of eggs and stay FAR away from peanuts for now. Other than that, I think she eats like a “normal” toddler.Neocate was our savior, and hopefully yours too! Once on Neocate “full time” we did not need any Prevacid!March 30, 2008 at 9:18 pm #49629AnonymousInactiveI think in a week you should see results, but it could take between 2-6 weeks for all of the milk proteins to leave her system. Nutramigen still contains some milk proteins (not as many as regular milk-based formula). Addy was on Neocate for a very long time and never really had a problem with constipation but I have heard a lot of others do.
Addy has outgrown a lot but still can not tolerate dairy, egg, soy, corn, and several other fruits and veggies. But she has come a long way and Neocate was totally wonderful!
Good luck and I hope the Neocate works for her!
March 31, 2008 at 1:03 pm #49654AnonymousInactiveHi there,
i am so sorry she is having Bm issues. I strongly suggest to ask for a stool test to test for C-dificile (sp?) and bacteria overgrowth. Diahrrea (sp?) for 8 weeks just seems too suspicuicus to me. Prevacid can also cause bacetria and c-diff. Also smelly nasty poo and green coudl definately be food intolerance. Ihave seen all kidn sof colors with my dd. In the mean time, you can try some strong hypoallergenic probitoic to help stop the daiahrrea. i recomend custom probitoics or pro biogold by kirkman labs. Those have been very helpful to improve my dd’s gut, food intolerances and bacteria issues.Good luck and hang in there. The Neocate has been great for us, but if there are other Gi problems like bacteria, the neoacte might not be enough.March 31, 2008 at 10:19 pm #49685AnonymousInactiveWhat is c-diff? I know the GI is sending the stool sample to a special lab for testing–I have to pick up the kit on Wednesday, so maybe I’ll know more about what she’s testing for then.
In the meantime, I haven’t noticed any difference yet. We just finished day 3. Elizabeth’s poop is still mucousy, and if I’m mid-diaper change and she goes–it’s frothy (sorry to be graphic, but I need all the help I can get).Any other thoughts? The GI had recommended Biogaia probiotic infant drops. We ordered them, but the few times I used them it seemed to make her uncomfortable.March 31, 2008 at 11:02 pm #49687AnonymousInactiveBiogia porbitoics only has oen strain of good bugs. You need a multiple strain one (specially acidophilus, which helps with diahrrea issues. I would start with a low dose, then increase as tolerated.
here is some info about c-diff
hope that helps and i am sorry she is still sick -
