My son was just diagnosed with MSPI. We started him on Alimentum last weekend and it was an amazing difference. Then 2 days later we started thickening his bottles with rice cereal and it seems a day or so later he’s become gassy/colicky again. I just read about Beechnut, so maybe it is the rice cereal. I was using Gerber which I saw has soy oil, but I thought soy oil/lecithin was ok to eat when I was trying the elimination diet. A little confused… If he needs Neocate, would Alimentum have worked for a couple of days and then stopped?
Also, I saw on ebay some pretty good deals on Alimentum (like $16/can). They have 07 exp dates and sound good, just wondering if anyone had any bad experiences.

Sometimes with these formula’s things get worse before they get better. Also it can take a few days for the reaction to build up which is why it seems to work at first but then stops. If things dont improve after being on the Alimentum for a couple of weeks then he might need Neocate. If things do improve without rice and you feel that the bottles need to be thickened you might try the Beechnut or something like simply thick or thicken up.

We were on nutramigen for a few months with gas problems that really got bad last month, went to alimentum for 2 weeks, gas problems back again, and now going to neocate. The doc. said that the milk proteins can build up in their system so sometimes it takes a while before we notice a problem. Also, rice is a problem for us too. We are using simply thick nectar consistantcy and beechnut barley. I know alot of moms skip the rice and go right to oatmeal. Hard with MSPI babies. Usually their systems are so sensitive, you have to wait longer to introduce solids. Hang in there! Sarah

It just took him a couple of weeks to get used to it in his digestive system. Sometimes it is hard to tell what is bothering them and it is just guess work. I hope you figure out what is bothering him!

Although his rash went away and his diaper area is no longer red. This weekend blood started showing up back in his poop (past 4 days, every poop). So my doctor is putting him on Neocate for a two week trial. Its so frustrating to think that we had the problem solved and then have everything unravel again!
