Hi everyone! I am new to this forum and thankful to have found some support in this area. I have a 4 month old son who I am exclusively breastfeeding and have since birth. My ultimate goal is to continue nursing until he is one.
Long story short (but not really…sorry for the length!!), I noticed blood in his stool when he was around a month old (not really any fussing, gaining TONS of weight, and still is…. 7 lbs. 9 oz. at birth, 17 lbs. now). Was told to cut all dairy, and did (even hidden). Blood streaked stools (tiny steaks that I have to look for) continued off and on for a while. Then I decided that maybe b/c of his large weight gains and my oversupply, that maybe it was lactose overload instead, so I began block feeding (started with 3 then moved to 4, then to 6, which seemed to do the trick), and I began just avoiding obvious dairy. Well a couple of weeks ago, the blood came back, he seemed super super fussy, not sleeping as well, etc. He has also had a pretty constant diaper rash that I’m only able to control with Desitin at EVERY diaper change (around anus…allergy ring?) He also is pooping several (anywhere from 3-6) times a day and it appears to be mucusy and occasionally green. He also seems to be chronically congested, which is also a sign of MSPI, right??SO.. Finally I decided that maybe it wasn’t lactose overload and MSPI instead. Today marks one week since I have gone on a complete dairy/soy free diet. I know all of the hidden dairy/soy ingredients and I am meticulous about reading labels/etc.He is still having green mucusy poops several times a day, but it has been probably a day or 2 since I saw any blood streaks. Diaper rash is still there and being controlled with desitin. He seems considerably less fussy and also less congested. My questions are:1- Do you think this sounds like MSPI and I’m on the right track with this diet? Or am I crazy and it’s something completely different?2- How long before his poop gets “normal”? Like not so frequent, not mucusy, not green?3- Since I had sort of (?) been avoiding dairy already, shouldn’t it get out of his system faster? I’m just worried that I’m not right in my “diagnosis” since it’s been a week and the rash/frequent pooping haven’t gotten better yet.I’ve talked to the ped. about all of this and they are a little bit clueless about all of it. No one has pushed me to give up nursing yet (probably b/c of his large weight gains), but no one suggested (or even mentioned) MSPI.I’m terribly sorry that this is so long, but I am desperate for some encouragement! I am perfectly content to stick with this diet for several more months if needed. I just want to feel like it’s making a difference!January 11, 2011 at 7:49 am #67537hellbenntKeymasterHi & welcome!dashing out the door- here are some links to get you through the day- please ignore this yellow as I type – it comes from me doing a search and then copying & pasting into this post-enjoy your light reading 😉no, seriously! you’re doing great mama! you’re on the right track!I’ll check back on you later 🙂~lauraErin’s sticky: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12948&PID=105126#105126

I can totally relate. Here’s a little bit of my story, it sounds similar! My LO is now 5 months old and when he was 7 wks we started having green mucousy blood streaked stools, nasal congestion (think Darth Vader) and ezcema on his tummy and legs. I’m also exclusively BF’ing and at first I only eliminated dairy. It seemed to help a litte, and the color changed back to yellowish after about a week, but still tons of mucous and blood streaks…long story short I went on a total elimination diet for about a month and in that time the ezcema cleared, congestion went away, and his diapers went back to odorless, mucuos/blood free and yellow. I have been able to determine he’s reacting to dairy, soy, eggs, and tomatoes. The doctor told me to avoid nuts as a precaution so I am.
I would keep trying your elimination diet, don’t give up!!! It can take a long time for everything to get to “normal”. For us it was over 4 wks!!January 12, 2011 at 1:51 pm #67550AnonymousInactiveThanks for the advice and the great links :o) I’ve also been avoiding eggs and nuts (didn’t mention those in the original post). I think I’ll give it another couple of weeks with what I’m doing so far, and if I still see symptoms, try the total elimination diet. I’ve been throwing the idea around for a while, but I’m a little worried about my supply suffering if I do that. The diapers have been less (almost no) mucuosyand more yellow for the past couple of days, so hopefully I’m onto something with the dairy, sory, eggs, and nuts. Thanks for your responses! It’s so helpful to hear other people’s experiences with this.

My supply seems fine, I haven’t had any problems with the baby loosing weight or not gaining weight. I’ve also been taking a multi-vitamin and calcium supplement. Good luck! Give us an update when you have one!
