New symptom

Ben has been doing fairly well on his new meds (zegerid 20ml), however, today he has had a new development. He has started to projectile vomit. He has only done this one other time when he had a viral infection(according to the ped). Well, he has now done it several times today. He seems really upset when it happens, but then, all of a sudden he is happy and smiley. Has anyone had experience with this change? Is this something I should worry about?

I’m sorry to hear that. I wonder if he could have another virus. Or maybe the Zegerid is making him throw up. Some babies have a hard time with the high sodium content and it causes them to throw up. How often is he throwing up? Is it usually soon after his Zegerid dose?

The other possibilitly is that it’s just a flare up of his reflux. My little guy used to have flare ups in which he’d projetile puke all over the house all day long for a while and then things would calm down again. He was a puker even without the flare ups, though. But there were lots of ups and downs in regards to the frequency and amount.

If it’s right after the med, I’d also wonder about the sodium in the zegerid. Otherwise, he’s around that 4 month mark where reflux worsens, so I’m wondering if that could be it. Hope you figure things out soon.

I can say from experience that when Cooper was about Ben’s age, I posted a boo hoo about his horrible spitting day… I think I change myself and him about 10 times each that day. It seems that reflux worsens around 4-7 months. My ped even noted that at our 6 month visit b/c they are becoming more mobile and putting more pressure on their tummies which can make even non spitters spit… so if it isn’t around med time or a virus, I would just say he might just be having a flare related to his age. Our flare lasted about 3 days and then things got back to normal. Still spitting, just not enough to have to constantly change clothes. Good Luck.

Like Christine mentioned, it very well could be the Zegerid. We had this problem when we first started it and ended up switching to the 40 mg. packets. They have less sodium bicarb, so you have to add extra buffer, but they are usually gentler on the tummy.

thank you guys for the great info. i had no idea that the reflux got worse at this age. grrrr!! ah well…he seems to be doing better today. we haven’t had any projectiles yet…just the usual unhappiness with feeding.

i’m still concerned about how many calories he’s getting (he’s such a big baby)and i would love to switch him to no oatmeal, just formula, but i’m worried to try it. any advice, suggestions? it seems that when i’ve cut back in the past he really struggles with how thin the formula is.

I am pretty sure that shanes reflux was worse around that age too.. but he was mostly a spitter not vomitter.. the only times he would vomit was when he was getting sick.. like a drip or something.. or even teething would cause it. Oh yea and vaccinations caused it too!! Did he just get vaccinated??

I would cut down the oatmeal by possibly changing the nipple. When we thickened his formula we had a special nipple for it.. when we didnt we had the normal stage 2’s. The oatmeal might be adding to his DGE if he has that.. and make the spit ups more often as well. But i did notice an increase in the volume of spitting up when we lessened the cereal.. so i would be prepared for that. I think that oatmeal doesnt thicken as well as rice anyhow.. so there might not be too much of a difference in the volume for you!

My advice on cutting back on the oatmeal is to do it little by little. It may even take a few weeks, but just cut back a little at a time. I know my first we thickened his formula and it took him awhile to get used to not having it so thick. He was much better off though not having it thickened.
