Okay to start out My name is Crystal 23, I have a son who is 16 months old who has Hirschsprung’s Disease, and also a daughter who is almost 2 months old who also has Hirschsprung’s Disease, and my Husband who is 25. Hirschsprung’s Disease is when the ganglion cells in the intestine don’t form properly and the are unable to pass stool properly. My son had 8 inches of his large intestine taken out, and my daughter had 16 inches removed.
This is where I need help.
My daughter who is almost 2 months old has had episodes of projectile vomiting in the past. One here or there. They tested her for pyloric stenosis when she was almost a month or a month old. That came back negative. She didn’t have any throwing up periods until now. She also is in a lot of discomfort. She makes this weird noise like she is sucking in air and will continue to do this off and on all day long. And she squirms when she is making these noises. She also draws her legs up, and throws her head back. She sleeps descent through the day. But at night she is horrible, I have to sleep with her on my chest, rather laying in her bassinet. And she continues the noises off and on all night long. Last week she started projectile vomiting all her feeds for 2 days. So seen a ped. GI and she said that she thinks she is lactose intolerant, and has acid reflux. She put us on Axed, and switched us to pregestimil by Enfamil. Sent us home, and she was still projectile vomiting every feeding, So we were admitted to the hospital put on IV fluids, and also a Pepcid through her IV. She did better, she sleep through the night there only waking to feed, and only vomited a few times. She is on Alimentum (SP?) by similac now, and I am going to switch her to nutramigen (sp?).Does this sound like reflux??? She had lower GI’s done and x-rays to make sure she doesn’t have a blockage from her Hirschsprung’s disease, and all came back normal. But she is in so much pain on and off and day and night long, and making those funny noises. I am just apprehensive since she has another disease.
When does reflux usually occur? Can the just me okay (but in pain, and make funny noises, and not sleep through the night) and then start projectile vomiting?
I’m just so confused. What do you think. I also need to be on a formula that doesn’t constipate her (since she has a problem pooping on her own anyways) Which one would be best for her? Pregestimil, Nutramigen, Alimentum?
Any other advice…..PLEASE HELP!!
My father also has Barret’s Disease, can reflux be genetic?October 25, 2008 at 12:51 pm #58021AnonymousInactiveOh, and she was taking 4 oz. at a time, and now that she had the projectile vomiting issue’s I can sometimes only get her to take 1.5-2.5oz at a time.
October 25, 2008 at 12:56 pm #58022hellbenntKeymasterHi & welcome! yes reflux can be genetic…it can also appear oout of no where. there’s not always a sure-fire answer as to where it came from…
I have a LOT MORE to say & (most of) it’s here:

also: sounds to me that baby is perhaps MSPI – there is a lot of onfo about this from the link I just gave you- but your doctor is a bit____…not sure what to put here? let me just say this: it is fairly rare for a baby to be lactose intolerant. What happens is that they are INTOLERANT or allergic to milk PROTEIN, not to lactose, which is milk SUGAR….
it seems fairly probable, because your baby is 2 months old, that your baby is having issues w/ milk and/or soy PROTEINS:2 months is ‘enough’ time for these proteins to build up in baby’s system and to start presenting problems/issues…hang in there!October 25, 2008 at 1:14 pm #58025AnonymousInactiveAlso she is on Axed. Her GI Dr. said to give her 1/2ml twice daily. That just seems like a low dose to me. She is 2 months old and weighs almost 11lbs. Does this seem right?
October 25, 2008 at 1:17 pm #58026AnonymousInactiveWhich formula would be best for MSPI? I have her on Nutramigen (sp?) as of now, but I also have Alimentum, and Pregestimil. Which one do you think would be best? And if she has MSPI, does this mean she has reflux as well? Of just an intolerance?
October 25, 2008 at 1:27 pm #58028AnonymousInactiveYes, reflux could be genetic.
Our pediatrician asked me, if me or my brother used to vomit when we were little.
I didn’t refluxing when I was little but my brother used to have projectile vomit when he was a baby, so our ped writing down all our family history, and said its run in the family. If your baby has MSPI, Neocate or Elecare is your best bet.
Alimentum/Nutramigen still has trace of milk on it (eventhough already broken down).
You could try thicken the formula (to help keep the formula down) using the simply thick. Are you breastfeeding too? If you are, try to avoid the food that triggers the reflux.
And is she tested for delayed gastric emptying/DGE? if so, she may need reglan/domperidone or any motility drugs, to helps the stomach empty faster so helps with the reflux episode.Good luck!
October 25, 2008 at 1:28 pm #58029AnonymousInactiveMSPI does not always mean reflux. We did well on Nutramigen, but then again-our GI specialist does not know if our DD grew out of her MSPI or if she was misdiagnosed by her moron first pediatrician.
And I feel like I am a poop expert since we also use Simply Thick for her feedings, which makes EVERYTHING simply thick in her body. At this age, you can give 1 oz prune juice or 1-2 oz apple or pear juice to get the body moving. Eventually, whatever you have her on, her body will adjust and the poop parade will begin again.and on the juice-those amts are only once a day. and prepare yourself with the prune juice-whoa nelly.BBerrysMom2008-10-25 13:29:33
October 25, 2008 at 1:34 pm #58030AnonymousInactiveAlso could I switch her to whole cows milk? Would that help..or am I crazy for asking that??? I don’t know a lot about reflux since I have spent the last 2 years researching Hirschsprung’s Disease, so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I am trying to look through all the forums, but with a 16 month old, and a screaming 2 month old..I’m finding it kind of difficult if you could imagine…LOL
October 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm #58032AnonymousInactiveNo cow! not until they are at least a year old-especially if they think that she is MSPI. Seriously-I would go to the grocery and get the Neocate-see if it makes a difference. Girl-if you lived in Dallas, me and the Blueberry would go get it for you. Hang in there!
October 25, 2008 at 1:41 pm #58033AnonymousInactiveNO, no WHOLE MILK till at least one year of age.
October 25, 2008 at 1:42 pm #58034AnonymousInactiveWell the Nutramigen seems to make her have almost like diarhea I have noticed. She has only been on it for one full day, and I have noticed that I have to do (i do rectal irrigations, and dilation’s, and decompression’s, to help her poop since she has a lot of scar tissue built up around her incision in her rectum, which closes her rectum off to not allow stool to pass) more decompression to let all the poop out. She passes stool on her own, but it seems like she is just having so many frequent stools that she can’t keep up and her little belly is starting to bloat. But I can NOT risk the chance of a formula constipating her. Even with adding the prunes, I have to stay away from anything with rice, or anything else that could constipate her. There’s just to much going on….I’m losing my mind let me tell ya.
October 25, 2008 at 1:50 pm #58035AnonymousInactiveAlso they have never did any test to Dx. Reflux. This is just my ped. GI Dx. without any test.. Could she know this without testing? She also had eczema on her face (so the GI said, and my Ped said it was a form of Cradle cap on her face) So which ever one you want to believe. And the GI said that was a sign that she is not adjusting to whatever she is eating. And other then her discomfort, and the weird noises she makes..(does anyone have any thoughts on the weird noise? She sounds like she is sucking in air) are the only signs she is going off of. Could she just know this without testing her? I think I am repeating myself know…LOL I better stop.
October 25, 2008 at 1:51 pm #58036AnonymousInactiveIts normal with Nutramigen/Alimentum to make the stool loose, but its not diarhea.
October 25, 2008 at 1:55 pm #58037AnonymousInactiveIt’s very liquidity, and frequent.
October 25, 2008 at 2:01 pm #58038hellbenntKeymasterstick with the formula change for 2 weeks and see how it goes- it takes a good 2 weeks for the proteins to clear out/build up
if the nutrimigen after 2 weks is a no-go then try neocateand yes the excema can be caused by the proteins in the formula…Mspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1
