Hello
I am a new mother of a 5wk old girl. She was born at 36 weeks and has reflux. She gets very red in the face and grunts and I am not sure if this is a BM or if she is fighting the reflux? She is taking Previcid ( at least when I can get it down). I am not sure if this “red face” is normal for a infant with reflux and it worries me some.
Also id it safe to let her sleep n her back? I am terrified she will choke. So she is still is her car set.
Any thoughts would be helpful
March 28, 2008 at 3:13 pm #49521hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
I have a LOT to say & (most of) it’s here:
Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1
please PLEASE read/skim/scroll through, as the info
REALLY WILL HELP YOUas for the car seat: you do what you do until things get better!if baby is happy & sleeping in the carseat then keep it that way until you get the reflux under control. TRY, though, for some tummy time, bcse you don’t want baby to wind up w/ a flat spot on the head…for day time naps (so you can WATCH) I suggest this : Try putting him on his tummy & put a beanie baby on his back for 2 reasons- to see that he’s breathing (the beanie baby will go up & down)& for the weight- put your hand on his back & then slowly leave it & the beanie baby is there instead…
please check http://www.marci-kids.com because my (educated) guess is that your baby’s prevacid dose is not high enough
also, if it’s the solutabs, then you need to be giving it on an empty stomach then followed by a meal 20 minutes later…from the ‘main’ link I gave you above, ‘Groupie Intro,’ look for ‘Prevacid 101’ where all of this is explainedso glad you found us!~laura
March 28, 2008 at 4:55 pm #49530AnonymousInactiveWelcome! Glad u found us! There are some wonderful moms on here with GREAT advice.
I second everything Laura said!My son slept in his car seat until he was about 3 months old and we got his meds and formula situation under control. It was the only place he would sleep. If you are worried about her choking in her sleep, maybe invest in an Angelcare monitor. I personally have never used one, but know some moms who have. It could help put your mind at ease. Walmart has a great price if you have one nearby, you can Site to Store ship for free. Amazon usually has the best prices on everything, but there is shipping involved.Make sure you are giving the Prevacid correctly! VERY important. You can find this info in the Groupie Intro that Laura posted above. My son used to grunt/snort when he was smaller and his reflux was not well controlled.**HUGS**HUGS**HUGS**March 28, 2008 at 8:13 pm #49542AnonymousInactiveHi and Welcome. Laura covers so much when she responds that I don’t have much to add. Things will get better. It may seem like it takes forever but things do get better. Do what you have to to get some sleep. I wish I had listened to that advice when my lo was younger but I totally believe it now.
March 28, 2008 at 9:31 pm #49548AnonymousInactiveHi there and welcome!
Sorry you are dealing with reflux!Landen would grunt really bad and for him it didn’t stop until his MSPI was under control (he ended up taking Neocate formula). I think his stomach was really hurting him on top of the silent reflux.hang in there!! It DOES get better and until then, we are all here if you need anything!March 29, 2008 at 12:47 pm #49574AnonymousInactiveHello
Thank you all for your responses!! I have read the Previcid 101 and have a few more questions.
Is the caracream the same as the compound the pharmacy would make?
Also is Previcid make with aspertame? If so that makes me a bit worried. I dont think that stuff is good for you.
Thanks
March 29, 2008 at 1:08 pm #49576hellbenntKeymastercaracream is something that you have to find on your own. Contact marci-kids, maybe they can help you. from Prevacid 101 you can read more about caracream and how to possibly find it. after reading that, then you can ask marci-kids if you can still try & track it down via FlavorX…so, yes, it is a product that a pharmacy can use but it is also a product that YOU can use at home. the first step is finding out if you can even get some.
compounded prevacid made PROPERLY is hard to get. BUT, it’s not impossible, just very hard. you need to print out EXACTLY how to get it compounded (link from Prevacid 101) and then find a very nice, cooperative pharmacist to go along with the EXACT instructions. you might even have luck having the doctor write it out as an actual prescription of how to exactly ask for it to be made (% of this to make _ml dose, etc)both caracream & compounded do not have to be timed around mealsthe solutabs, yes, they do contain some aspertame and they do contain some lactose (milk sugar, not milk protein, but some babies do react to the solutabs & maybe they’re reacting to the lactose, maybe the aspertame & maybe the flavoring…)hope i answered your questions?March 29, 2008 at 3:01 pm #49580AnonymousInactiveHi,
Sorry if I missed it, but are you breastfeeding or formula feeding (& what type if so)? I ask because the grunting you mention reminds me so much of both my boys as newborns. They grunted and they grunted and they grunted SO loudly, and in both of our cases, it turned out to be protein intolerances that caused the grunting, the excessive gas, and a lot of the discomfort in general. Many babies with acid reflux also have protein intolerances, which can make the reflux symptoms so much worse. The biggies are milk and soy protein, but my youngest son was also bothered by just about any significant amount of any protein in my diet.March 29, 2008 at 5:45 pm #49583hellbenntKeymasterMspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1
March 29, 2008 at 8:23 pm #49587AnonymousInactiveHello Again
I am formula feeding my little girl. Yes Laura tha answers my questions, but I have a few more. (I am so glad i found this site)
For those of you that say your kids outgrew acid reflux how long does that take?
Also she has a lot of gas. How do it tell if her grunting and “red face” are from the reflux or the gas? Should I go back to my doc and ask him what is going on? Maybe increase the does. She nows weights 6.9
Has anyone had any issues with the breathing along with the reflux. Sometime(like after she eats or has a lot of grunting her breath is a labored. A bit of retracting and sometimes she has a few short breaths then back to normal. I am not sure if this is newborn periodic breathing? My doc said it is because she is putting on so much weight. (she gained 14 oz in 7 days).
Thanks again for all your answers. It is great to have this site. I am worried sick over my baby!!!
March 29, 2008 at 9:15 pm #49590AnonymousInactiveFor us, a lot of gas was a symptom of milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI).
My son Ben outgrew the worst of his reflux by about 8 months of age, but my daughter Paige is now 16 months and still needing Prevacid. A lot of little ones seem to improve around the 9-12 month age, but some still need meds past 1 year of age.March 29, 2008 at 9:27 pm #49591hellbenntKeymasterthe weight gain sounds like she’s comfort feeding…many babies do this to soothe the burn…
also, this might help (this is not from me, it’s from a Moderator at the Yahoo breastfeedingreflux group):
what’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed. -
