Hi everyone!
My daughter Lucy is 8 weeks old today, and she has been quite fussy since the day she was born! At about 3 weeks, she began pulling off the bottle and screaming in the middle of feeds — I wasn’t really sure what this meant, but she was diagnosed with reflux about two weeks ago. She also gets frequent hiccups and is rather difficult to burp. Also, she has to be held and walked around constantly — no sitting down except for feeding — does this sound like a symptom of reflux
We started Axid 9 days ago, and I was hoping it would be working by now. However, she is still screaming, crying, very unhappy. Maybe it’s not just reflux? I don’t know.. Should the Axid be working by now?
I’m at my wit’s end. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks!
Robin

It sounds like reflux to me. The axid should be helping some, but many of us have had to go on to stronger more effective meds such as prevacid, zegerid and nexium to actually see the happy babies we knew we had. Again Laura’s intro will help tons. The axid is very weight sensitive so that may be part of the problem as well. You could give some cherry mylanta supreme about 1ml up to 5 x/day to see if that helps. This is a temporary solution and doesn’t last long, but it does help. Also be aware that if you give to much it can cause loose stools… just a side effect not anything wrong with it. I hope that helps some. I am sure some other moms will chime in soon. Glad you found us.

I am not familiar with axid but just wanted to say hello and to hang in there. Our son’s reflux seems to be somewhat under control as of about a week ago, he is almost 14 weeks old.
This is a great site and although I don’t get to it as much as I’d like to, there is a whole lot of support and knowledge here………………Take careJuly 6, 2008 at 2:43 pm #53439AnonymousInactiveHi Robin,
yes, Axid is an ‘acid reducer’. Like Beth mentioned it is very weight sensitive and most of us found it to stop working after about a week. Actually we used zantac at first and it never helped us at all! We had much more luck on a PPI drug. You can check out http://www.marci-kids.com for the most recent information on ppi’s and the best dose for your baby using their ppi dosing calculator. Many docs underdose and a lot of us have had a hard time getting docs to dose the marci-kids dose, but that is the only dose that helped us!!Also, what kind of formula are you using? Many refluxers have a very immature digetstive system and are MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerant). Your baby might do better on a hypoallergenic formula like Alimentum or Nutramigen or an Elemental formula like Neocate or Elecare.July 6, 2008 at 3:00 pm #53440hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
I’m laura & here’s my welcome/intro:also I would guess that you have ‘room’ to increase her axid. it can be as high as 10mgs per kilo- read through here:July 6, 2008 at 3:26 pm #53441AnonymousInactiveHi and welcome!! You sound like me back in the day! We were prescribed zantac (similar to axid) and when it did NOTHING I started to 2nd guess whether she even had reflux or not. I figured that medicine should be the cure all. I was soooooooooo wrong and my doctor wasn’t knowledgable about PPIs and other forms of reflux meds…so it took my persistence, research, and pushing the doctor before we finally got Sarah on a high dose of zegerid. The rest was smooth sailing!
I am so glad I listened to my gut and didn’t just ‘give up’ and think I had a ‘high needs’ baby. You need to keep fighting for what you think is best and read read read. You’ll quickly discover there are other options to consider!Good luck and I’m glad you found us! The mommies on here are FANTASTIC!
July 6, 2008 at 7:53 pm #53443AnonymousInactiveThanks for all of the feedback! We are going to see the ped. on Tuesday, and I’m going to push for a prescription for Prevacid (this is what she said would be the PPI of choice if I didn’t feel the Axid was working). I’m going to ask her to make sure the dosage seems adequate for Lucy’s weight, too. I’m just frustrated because I don’t know how much of her screaming/crying/general fussiness is temperament, how much is reflux, and how much is “colic” (whatever that is exactly). But she definitely seems to be in pain, especially when she pulls off the bottle during feedings, and I can hear her swallowing often, not during feedings, as though she is regurgitating but it’s not coming all the way up (she’s not a spitter at all).
Anyway, thanks for the info and support. I will keep you all posted.
Robin
