hello my name is krystle i am 23 years old and the proud mommy of
Madison who is over 2 months now! she came to my world at only 34 weeks
due to eclampsia !! i spent 3 weeks everyday 16 hours in the hospital
with her and never left her side.. i was plan on breastfeeding but with
my blood pressure pretty high and life threating i never got milk.. so
i decided to go ahead with the powder formula…. everything was going
great ubtil about 2 weeks ago.. madison started crying and crying and
crying… she would stick her tounge out like she was bringing up acid
in her mouth and i know its something because it is a “bitter beer
face” we go to the doctor.. he tells me that it could be a reaction to
the rotavirus shot and that it causes cramping and lots of
uncomfortable feelings… she has always had gas real bad… the doctor
told me to thicken her formula with barley cereal.. we have been.. and
she has also been taking prevacid 15mg a day….nothing has changed im
not sure if maybe her formula which is neosure 22 cal is the cause of
this.. the docotr told me that she is not ready to switch formulas yet
because she isnt at thhe right weight yet.. gas drops dont work.. gripe
water doesnt work, he told me to try a quater teaspoon of malox before
feedings.. that dont work.. and i am tired of seening my baby suffer…
any suggestions…im tired…. stressed and being a new mom i just dont know!!!!!1
November 23, 2008 at 1:36 pm #58924hellbenntKeymasterwelcome krystle! you & Madison have been through a lot! but now you’ve surfed on-in to a great place!
I would stop thickening…your baby is getting the extra calories from the neosure, right? so see what happens if you don’t thicken? I only say this bcse she is so little and her digestive system is so sensitive…you can TELL (don’t ask! just TELL!) your dr that you want a Swallow Study to actually find out if Madison NEEDS the thickening. This is a test, done by a SLP (Speech language pathologist- sounds so WEIRD bcse she’s an infant and not talking! But, this is the person who does the test). During the test they watch HOW she swallows and look to see if there are any problems with her suck and/or her swallow, and, if she is aspirating, getting liquid into her lungs, when she drinks. IF there are any problems with any of these things, then they will tell you HOW to thicken- there are ‘thickening agents’ (brand names are Simply Thick and Thick It) that get added to the formula to thicken it and you are told the EXACT consistancy/thickness of how much to thicken- they use words like ‘honey’ and ‘nectar,’ etc, to tell you exactly how thick to make her formula. If you want to continue thickening while you wait for the swallow test, or if you try not thickening for a day or two and find it to be disastrous, then you might want to try Beechnut brand cereal, as it does not have any milk or soy proteins which can upset reflux babies.as for the prevacid: what form is it? if it is the solutabs, then you MUST give it on an empty stomach, follwed by a meal 30 minutes later. if it the capsules, you also need to give on an empty stomach, follwed by a meal 30 minutes later but you also need to give the beads from the capsule w/ some applesauce or pears. If it is a liquid, called a compound, that the pharmacy makes for you….well…it is highly possible that it is not being made correctly Please read here: Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1Also: you ‘should’ give the medicine in 2 doses because babies have very fast metabolisms and they speed right through their dose, so a single dose doesn’t last all day…There is a LOT of information to learn, but soon you’ll be posting all that has helped you and you’ll help othersSo glad you found us!~lauraI have a LOT MORE to say J & (most of) it’s here: Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1
Please PLEASE take the time to read/scroll/skim through the info from this link, as it truly will help you! You can always refer back to it!
