I have B/G 28 weeker twins. My little girl has reflux for which she is on 1Ml twice a day of Zantac. She is around 11 lbs at an adjusted age of 11 weeks. She has developed quite the aversion to feeding and rarely shows signs of hunger. We basically need to force feed her which breaks my heart. She often screams before the bottle even gets into her mouth and when she doesn’t fight initially, after the first burp she is in pain and then fights. She is clearly ready to sleep through the night, but I am worried because that will cut out a feeding and I am scared she won’t get enough. I hate making her eat, but i am very fearful she will take half the amount if I don’t. The times when she only eats half the bottle she does not show signs of hunger before the next feed. I would love to hear any suggestions from anyone. We have an appt with a GI, but thats not until August. I had brought up adding Mylanta/Maalox to my ped, but she would prefer we do not. We also have her on probiotics. TIA

check zantac dose by weight- I can, and will, but you can get it done faster
TELL dr you need test for Delayed Gastric Emptying- DGE- if she has this then she’s feeling full and not wanting to eat bcse she’s full- her stomach might still be full- TELL don’t ask

I tried the feeding aversion link and nothing came up. Right now she is on bottles that are 80% formula, 20% breast milk. She was on 22 calorie enfacare, but trying Gerber good start now. Don’t think it is helping and may try Alimentum next.
July 1, 2013 at 11:14 pm #72460hellbenntKeymasterfind another doctor(?)
Looking for GI: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660
there are recommendations for ped GIs in your area…
at the same time, also look for a family doctor who will listen to you…
the search button is your friend
here’s a search using keywords
feeding aversion
and going 6 months and newer
try different key words and varying amounts of time, like 6 months & OLDER, etc
as for zantac, talk to the pharmcist – read the info in the link – ask pharmacist about zantac dosing for GERD, not ‘just’ for general pediatric use- it’s in the link- then FAX your dr w/ what you come up with
FAX FAX FAX the dr
don’t wait for a call…
start off with a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the FACTS (no emotions and ramblings)
state current meds, doses & symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
provide pharmacist name & contact info
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to tell them fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests made in fax, ie:
is RX called in yet?
THANK YOU

July 2, 2013 at 12:56 am #72461AnonymousInactiveI am sorry your little one is suffering and you are feeling desperate. But I sure know the feeling!! (((HUGS))) to you!!!
Probiotics are a really good thing but I feel strongly that it is important and very beneficial to also give digestive enzymes along with that. They are not generally a cure all and they certainly help some more than others but I feel they certainly are worth a try for all. π
I agree with the things that Laura suggested and I am not saying to not do those things. I am just suggesting probiotics and enzymes as something to try ALSO.
Just a few weeks ago I received an email from a mom who had read my blog and had some questions. She was/is feeling desperate just like you. Her child doesn’t want to eat and is continually going down in his weight.
So, I asked 3 other moms that have been through this with their children to please email this mom with their suggestions. Two of these moms forwarded me what they wrote to this mom. And I will copy and paste them here for you to read.
But first I want to say that although these moms use the same digestive enzymes and probiotics I use and refer to them as “Martha’s”, I do not sell this product. I do though highly recommend it because it is what has helped me and my children so much. But there are others on this site that have found help with other brands of probiotics and enzymes.
Here is what Federica replied…
I am a good friend of Martha’s and she forwarded your email as I went through the same thing you are. My son Matias was born at 50 percentile and by the time he was 4months he dropped to 25 and eventually off the charts. You are starting early and have a very good chance of doing better than I did. By the time my son Matias was 2yrs a feeding tube seemed eminent but I fought it with all my heart, left my job and dedicated myself to getting him to eat. As I said, you are early, I imagine he is still in the charts.
At 4 months, every feeding was a wrestling match, I had to feed him while bouncing on a Pilates ball just to get him to eat a bit. We had done Zantac, with not much result, then Prevacid with no result. I started taking things out of my diet, diary first, (it takes 2 weeks for dairy to get out of the system so you would need to be off it for 4 weeks to see results) and dairy is in everything. Matias seemed a bit better but not much. Then I took off gluten, and other allergens. My diet consisted on Pears and Turkey. I was going nuts and the baby was not doing much better. No sleep, no eat, loosing weight.
When we visited our Pediatric GI he suggested formula. I was devastated, I was so determined to breastfeed he suggested we just tried for a weekend, and I would keep pumping just in case I wanted to keep breastfeeding. We tried Elecare for two days (hypoallergenic formula) and it took him a while to like it but he seemed happier, he’s constant brow actually went away. I would really suggest you try this to start. SomeGI believe Reflux can be caused or accelerated by protein allergies or intolerances. So you might still need medication on top of formula but eventually with the Digestive Health (Martha’s Probiotics), feeding therapy and even appetite enhancers, he will be fine.
This is my first suggestion, let me know if this helps and I can suggest other things we did. Like I said you are early and you and your LO will be fine. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any other questions.
Then in Federica’s email back to me she said this The sad thing about it all, is that once you are in that deep. Like you with your first boy or mine, you need quick results or things get ugly quick. I wish they would even try syringe the formula just to see if it works. The baby has learnt it hurts and thats why they need to change the milk asap or it will become a bigger aversion.
I wish we all found you earlier! All this moms need to know they need to start Digestive Health at pregnancy so they don’t get there. My second son eats like a PIG! Anything i put in front of him, we just started everything earlier.
You can read Federica’s full story on my blog http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/federicas-story/
This is Priya’s reply to her…
> Firstly a big hug and lot of prayers for you.I can totally relate to you.
> My name is Priya, blessed mom to 19 month old beautiful twin girls.
> I know Martha for the last 2 months. She saved our lives!!!
>
> A little background:
> ————————-
> Me and my dear husband were blessed with beautiful healthy twin girls on Nov 2012.
> i delivered at 37 weeks.
> We were over cloud 9…thanked God for healthy babies.
> First two months were just fine.Though i couldn’t nurse them;i pumped religiously and fed them mostly pumped breast milk and just 1 bottle formula.Around 3rd month, one of our baby Saavna started rejecting bottles. We tried every nipple/bottle.Tried feeding in dark room, with /without music, with/without distraction. Our pediatrician just ignored the issue stating i was just a stressed out twin mom π ….It used to take 1 hour 45 mins just to feed 2-3 oz formula. And when we try to burp her,she will throw up everything she drank. I was ignoring my other baby all this time and felt like a horrible mom π .. .My babies were on the bottom of the growth chart…
> Saavna had barium study done,x ray ,ultrasound and endoscopy, which showed acid reflux.By this time, she developed extreme oral aversion…she was given Zantac and then Prevacid.None of the medicines worked. That’s when i contacted Martha. She is truly an angel .i started giving our babies Digestive health( probiotic+digestive enzymes) .FIRST WEEK ON THIS PROBIOTIC WAS HELL.I spoke to Core health company guy( sorry forgot his name) and he said this side effect is quite common and its just temporary and is called Hertz reaction. Its basically like a cleansing process of the gut.We started noticing the change after the first week. She didnt throw up after that at all and her reflux was GONE!! Now she takes 3 probiotics a day and is 100% reflux free and is gaining weight. I just wish i would have met Martha when my babies were aroung 3-4 months old ..
Lorraine is the third mom I asked to reply to this mom and you can read her full story on my blog. http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/lorraines-story/
I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do and hope that soon you can find answers and help for your little one!!
Happy Mom 2013-07-02 01:02:32 July 2, 2013 at 1:07 am #72462AnonymousInactiveP.S. You can go to the home page of my blog to read what I have written up on why and how probiotics and enzymes can possibly help.
Also…I am not an advocate of using formula. I think is best to first try to get your milk to be something that your baby can tolerate. But of course in some cases it just plain doesn’t work. And too, I know how extremely hard it is to eliminate foods from your diet. I only nursed my first son for 12 weeks and my second son for 8 weeks. π
July 2, 2013 at 8:11 am #72463hellbenntKeymasterReasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:
*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!
