My name is Amanda and I am new to this how blogging thing and to this forum. I have 2 girls one is 5 and the other is 3 weeks. I am having trouble with reflux with my 3 wk old. She hasn’t been diagnosed yet but she has all the symptons. I breastfeed and all she does is spit up after. Can I get some tips on what to do to keep her reflux under control? I am pretty stressed over this, the only time she doesn’t cry is when I hold her or she is sleeping. She doesn’t like it at all when I am not near her either. My 5yr old was not like this at all!
April 9, 2009 at 12:42 pm #62029AnonymousInactivethere is not alot you can do to keep it under control by yourself. i would ;make an appt with a ped gi as soon as possible. sounds like she needs to be on meds. medication won’t stop the spitting up, but it will help with the pain.

April 10, 2009 at 1:00 pm #62044AnonymousInactiveHi there,
Both of my boys were refluxers and as soon as I noticed things weren’t right, I took them to their Ped.
As for meds, with both of my boys I ended up using Mylanta Cherry Supreme between feeds. It seems like with refluxer’s it’s trial and error at times regarding what will work and what won’t. With my younger son, we ended up having to put him on Prilosec, but it worked wonders when we found the right dose!
I had to keep my boys propped up all the time – in a bouncy seat or holding them upright. Laying them flat just wasn’t an option! There is tons of good info on this forum – that will hopefully help you! Hang in there!

She did great for a week and a half after she went on it. Now she is starting to cry again like before her meds. Just curious cause there are different types of mylanta. Some have alluminum in them and others have magnesium. I heard alluminum isn’t good. What about magnesium?
April 12, 2009 at 12:45 pm #62062hellbenntKeymasteradding cereal to breastmilk doesn’t really work…I’m sorry to say..there are enzymes in the breastmilk that break down the cereal
http://www.kellymom.com is an excellent breastfeeding resource…it may or may not be something in your diet- if poops are ‘normal’ yellow/mustardy seedy breastfed baby poops (occasional green is normal! just not frequent green) then it might not be your diet…if poops are mucousy (looks like snot or the strings from a banana) all the time and are green all the time then it might be something in your diet- als oif baby has foul-smelling gas and seems to grunt and strain to pass gas or to pass a stool- then it might be your diet…anyway I would get to a ped Gi- sounds like your ped is very old-fashioned (telling you to thicken feeds- this can also interfere with your supply) and gripe water- there’s a link somewhere that explains why/how gripe water isn’t always the best for these babies- use the search button on the upper right-hand corner of the screen and choose ‘all forums’ and ‘6 months and OLDER’ to learn from past posters…I usually am the QUEEN of links, lol, but my computer is fried and i don’t have access (or the time to search) to my usual links…i appologize…hang in there! have you gone and read ‘groupie intro’? it will help a LOT! go to the Introduce Yourself Forum and it’s the top post there…April 20, 2009 at 9:46 am #62189AnonymousInactive>>>How much mylanta can I give?
I honestly cannot remember exactly how much Mylanta to give. Talk to your baby’s doctor – I’m sure it goes by weight. I do know, though, that we used Mylanta often on both of our refluxers. I always kept a bottle of Mylanta and a dispencer in my diaper bags!
>>>My daugter is 9 weeks old and I think her
reflux is stronger than the prevacid we have her on.Than go with your gut instincts and talk to her doctor! My son, Jordan, was on a big dose of Prilosec. We had him up to 30 mgs a day when he was about six months old or so. Babies metabolize meds much more quickly than adults and that is why sometimes they need higher dosages.

magnesium. I heard alluminum isn’t good. What about magnesium?I always used the Mylanta Cherry Supreme because it doesn’t contain the aluminum (we actually still keep it handy around here).
I hope your baby feels better soon! It is so terribly difficult to deal with reflux…hang in there!

April 20, 2009 at 10:45 am #62190AnonymousInactiveThank you so much! We did buy Mylanta but have only tried it once. We now have her on prevacid and zantac and she is doing so great. Last week the doc wanted to take her off of zantac and it was horrible. So the poor thing needs both meds. Haven’t needed to use the mylanta since she is now on both. Thanks for your reply!!

I used to see laura’s posts about baby wearing and I can tell you that now I am an absolute convert. Get yourself and sling and put your bub in it…is all I can add to above. I am glad the meds are kicking in and things are on the improve.
