Just curious for those using Neocate…how many were able to STOP using reflux meds once you were on the neocate?
I am struggling with how to help Emma. Neocate is our next formula step and I just don’t know if she’s THAT bad…mucousy diapers that give her a bloody rash sometimes, diapers that smell like ammonia, fidgity, painful gas, and squirminess. BUT she doesn’t scream all the time. She’s generally a pretty happy baby, she just has trouble falling asleep. If starting Neocate would mean we could wean her from her meds then I’d be more than happy to jump on the Neocate bandwagon! I just didn’t know how common it was to be able to stop meds once on neocate???I am also trying to get our insurance to approve zegerid. I DON’T want to start both neocate and zegerid at the same time, but I DO think I’m going to push them for both just so I have them…and then pick one or the other to trial first. Not sure which one yet…(we’re currently using Prilosec OTC mixed with BB) My HOPE is that the Neocate might mean we don’t need zegerid AT ALL…but just in case I want to have it.January 15, 2010 at 8:53 am #65497AnonymousInactiveI think we already “talked” about this, but Evie went off Prevacid cold turkey the day we started Neocate. We never looked back!
January 15, 2010 at 9:12 am #65499AnonymousInactiveWait, I was just thinking. Is she visibly refluxing at all? It really kind of sounds like ALL MSPI. Maybe Neocate is worth a shot. Then, you could get ins. to cover it and just used BB if necessary. BB is cheaper than Neocate, so you’d probably rather have ins. cover Neocate.
January 15, 2010 at 9:18 am #65501AnonymousInactiveYes, she does visibly reflux…it’s silent though b/c she’s not much of a spitter. She coughs and chokes frequently, sometimes hours after she has eaten. Hiccups a lot. She also seems voracious with the bottle…like Sarah used to be…either she’s always just REALLY hungry or it’s soothing her throat???
Again though…she doesn’t scream all the time so I’m baffled! LOL!January 15, 2010 at 10:00 am #65503AnonymousInactiveWhich one do I order? DHA one or the one without?????
January 15, 2010 at 10:15 am #65505AnonymousInactiveThe pharmacy has been sending me the one with DHA and ARA, but if I had my choice, I would be ordering the one without. I believe it’s synthetic and there is some contraversy surrounding it. I’ve also heard some babies are sensitive to it. I’d rather just not have it.
January 15, 2010 at 11:10 am #65507AnonymousInactiveI would get the one without DHA. Kendra still needed Zegerid, even on Neocate (i belive the Corn Syrup did not agree with her), but every baby is different. I hope Emma feels better soon.
January 15, 2010 at 11:58 am #65509AnonymousInactiveThanks girls! When I was typing my letter of medical necessity for insurance the Neocate website had separate letters for the DHA and without. I’ll def ask for the one without! 🙂
January 15, 2010 at 4:07 pm #65511AnonymousInactiveI feel like singing the Dora “We Did It” song because I got an rx for Neocate! Woo hoo! I didn’t even have to take Emma in to be seen! I talked to the ped over the phone, explained the mucous and bloody rash. His response was “Wow, I’ve never had a baby need more than a hypoallergenic formula”. (YEP…I’m from a small town! LOL!) He asked what I wanted, I told him Neocate, he wrote an rx, I brought over the letter to be faxed to insurance, he signed it, faxed it, and I walked away with the prescription! Now I’m not sure what happens when I go to fill it today and it hasn’t been approved yet by my insurance…but I’m just glad to have it in hand! I’m ready to have a HAPPY COMFORTABLE BABY!!!
January 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm #65522AnonymousInactiveHey, our pedi never had any kid on Neocate before Dagney either! Now he’s got both my babies to look at! Anyway, Dagney was on the PRevacid and Neocate, and actually weaned off the Neocate before we weaned off the Prevacid. And we just had to up Harry to 45mg of Prevacid and he Neocate to hopefully do hte trick. That being said, hopefully Emma only needs the Neocate and you won’t have to worry about the stupid meds for long! Great news about the rx too!
January 17, 2010 at 3:52 pm #65549AnonymousInactiveWe had to use both, the signs were obvious, but never having had a refluxer before, I had no idea what I was looking for. We also weaned off the Neocate before the Prevacid.
January 17, 2010 at 4:40 pm #65551AnonymousInactiveWe can’t get the Neocate until Tuesday at the earliest. The pharmacy had never heard of it either, so obviously they didn’t have any in stock. Our pharmacist is going to call Monday to find out if it will be billed as major medical, prescription, or if I pay out of pocket and am reimbursed. I’m thinking it’s #3. Anyway…I’ll keep you posted! I’m definitely going to stay ON reflux meds for several more weeks before I try to drop it. It would be AWESOME if we could drop them though!
