I’m new here and struggling with my 6 month old daughter. We’ve
tried all formulas, besides neocate and many meds (zantac, prevacid,
mylanta, reglan, etc). I can’t get back into the gi doc until
April. I went down to their office to get hemocult tests and
asked if i could briefly talk to the doc about trying neocate.
needless to say, she said try nutramigen. but my dd refluxed
more, diarrehea, crying more, and sleeping less. so i said i
wanted to try neocate. she was hesitant and said fine and gave me
2 cans. Should i wait to see the gi doc or just give neocate a
try?Abby cries a lot. I carry her all day. her voice is gone
because i gave her a tsp of oatmeal (ped’s instructions to thicken
feeds) and she screamed on and off all night. She can’t tolerate
rice cereal, oatmeal but can tolerate fruits and veggies (the ones of
tried). She’s costipated on soy, refluxing and fussy. on
nutramigen she’s just a mess.We took blood tests today, also for allergies.
Should i fight it out with the soy until i get into the gi doc?
February 24, 2006 at 6:20 pm #2406AnonymousInactiveYou’ve tried Nutramigen but have you tried Alimentum? Worth a try before going to Neocate.
February 24, 2006 at 6:26 pm #2407AnonymousInactiveNo, we haven’t. I guess it’s worth a shot! But since she
was such a mess on Nutramigen over any of the formulas, do you think it
would work?Sulu2006-2-24 18:27:15
February 24, 2006 at 6:47 pm #2409AnonymousInactiveIt could – some babies do much better on one versus the other. You can
try the RTF and powder – they are different consistencies – to see if
one works better than the other.February 24, 2006 at 7:25 pm #2411AnonymousInactiveRTF? I’m new to this…….
February 24, 2006 at 7:28 pm #2412AnonymousInactiveSorry – ready to feed.
February 24, 2006 at 7:58 pm #2415AnonymousInactiveI would ask your doctor how she recommends you mix up the Neocate, but since you have the samples, it can’t hurt to see if it works. I wish you luck.
February 25, 2006 at 4:47 pm #2486hellbenntKeymasteris the cereal beechnut brand? gerber and others have soy in them…if you can’t find beechnut, then you can try your local healthfood market to find cereals without soy…or, you can just not give cereal! You can try 2wks of neocate only and then try solids again- your baby does not NEED solids at this moment…soon….
I would FAX the GI doctor and BEG for a sooner appointment- request that they PLEASE put you on their cancellation list- I say FAX bcse I truly believe you get ‘heard’ this way…

February 26, 2006 at 1:03 pm #2531AnonymousInactiveI’ve tried both cereals; with and without soy. All grains all
hard on her body. I’m not going to worry about the solids, like
you said. I just need to get her better.Faxing…..good thought. I’ll do that. I think showing up
at their office put me in their heads. Now I’ll fax them tomorrow.I started her on Neocate almost 2 days ago. Her mood is better,
throwing up a ton (not forceful) and her stool was black. But I’m
hoping that her body is trying to get used to it. I have a hard
time getting it to dissolve all the way. Thanks
February 26, 2006 at 1:22 pm #2532AnonymousInactiveHey just started the neocate. My daughter is mspi, on other formulas, its like her intestines blow up with gas and she is tooting bullets. It is so painful for her. I have to literally push her tummy to make it come out. She was on nutramigen and alimentum for a few months with some gas but i guess it built up in her system to the point where she could absoltely not tolerate it any more. I also new the milk proteins were getting to her because she has atopic dermititus (ezcema) on her eye.
Ryann’s only 1 day older than Abby! She is not on solids yet either. The only thing that she can tolerate is beechnut barley, 2 tsp. in her forumla each day. We are starting slow, with just a tsp. here and there. I had to thicken the neocate with simply thick because it is really watery. Good luck with everything!
February 26, 2006 at 1:34 pm #2536AnonymousInactiveI’ve never tried barely, but the oatmeal and rice are aweful on her
system. Does your daughter throw up a lot on neocate due to how
watery it is? Dark stools? Also do you notice it’s hard to
get it dissolved all the way? She can digest fruits and
veggies. Which is a relief.Abby’s never had ezcema but had a really bad rash on her face when she
was younger. We switched formula and it went away but other
problems started. Not sure yet if she’s MSPI. Waiting to
see the gi doc again and get test results back.February 26, 2006 at 1:42 pm #2537AnonymousInactiveRyann’s the same way, horrible with rice and oatmeal. I just noticed that the barley didn’t cause all the horrible gas like the other foods. I know on the mspi allergy chart, it says to introduce barley around 9 months, but it is a stage 1 food and a single grain so worth a try. I know alot of moms skip the cereals all together and go back to them later. that’s great that Abby can tolerate fruits and veggies. Ryann still hasn’t figured out that baby food is food, she only wants her milk right now. Hope she makes the connection soon. I want something heavy in that tummy!!
The neocate is so watery that i can hear more refluxing (silent refluxer) and reswallowing. We don’t have the dark stools that we did the first time we tried it, think its because we thicken with ST now. We are also on the new and improved formula, it smells better and tastes better (i had to taste test it ).
February 27, 2006 at 1:33 am #2563AnonymousInactiveSulu,
I just want to reassure you that you really can just not give any cereal whatsoever and give her the fruits she does okay with. At 6 mos it really won’t hurt her not to have cereal. With my lo, I started solids at nearly 7 mos, and by 8 or 8 1/2 months realized he might be MSPI, stopped all solids, put myself on a strict elimination diet and he bfed exclusively until he was 10 months old. Then we started solids again, very slowly. He is 17 mos now and eats very well. Of course he was a little behind our friends who were 10 months and had been having three meals of solids a day for months on end, but you have to do what is best for your baby, regardless of what other moms “normally” do.
I’m sure that in many other cultures and in the history of having babies, that lots of babies have not had too many solids during their first year, so I wouldn’t sweat it at this point. It’s always good to know that someone else did this and it didn’t make their kid weird or anything. haha. Hang in there, it’s so hard when you don’t have answers yet.
