my ds started neocate 2 weeks ago yesterday and is having one of his worst weeks ever. he’s completely stopped eating and will only take a couple of ounces when he is sleeping. i think the past 2 days he’s only had 14 ounces each day. his symptoms have gotten worse- reflux seems worse- he is now spitting up 4-5 times a day where as before he was a “silent” reflux baby and we didn’t notice it as much, rarely spit up. he has lots of colicky fits and seems sooooo uncomfortable while eating. i’ve also noticed some rashes are back. my question- has this happened to anyone else out there? has neocate made things worse before making things better? i just dont understand how he isnt responding well to the neocate. the GI thinks he has a severe milk/soy protein allergy and will probably do an endoscopy next friday. i’m waiting to hear back from the dr. or at least a nurse regarding my son’s “reactions” to the neocate.

Also, it may take a good while(up to 4 weeks)for all the offending proteins to get out of his system. Is he on prevacid? I thought I might have seen you said he takes 7.5mg/day? If I’m remembering correctly, this could very well be his problem. That dose is awfully low and PPIs in infants work best given 2-3 times/day. Also, the spitting up isn’t uncommon when switching b/c neocate is much thinner than reg formulas. My DD is on elecare and at first seemed to do the same thing, but once we got her meds right she’s done much better. Hopefully all he needs is a good dose…Good Luck!
January 29, 2009 at 11:37 am #60674AnonymousInactivethank you so much- i hope you are right! i ‘ve been hearing that a lot, about his dosage being low. the GI didnt think his issues were from the silent reflux but they may be, in addition to the blood in stools/inflammation from the milk allergy. i just got off the phone with the nurse and she told me to wait until tuesday and discuss it with the dr.. it might be a LONG weekend…thank you again!

January 30, 2009 at 1:29 pm #60701AnonymousInactiveHi there –
Connor has been on Neocate since two weeks before Christmas and is doing great on it – but when he started, it DEFINITELY got worse before it got better. I remember after exactly one week of him being on it, I called his GI doc because he had screamed ALL. DAY. LONG. She kept telling me that we had to give it two weeks and I was doubtful, but after two weeks we really did see a difference – and he was a new baby around the 3-4 week mark.
I know it’s so so hard to wait, but it did take that long for us to really see an improvement in him. Now, most days we wouldn’t even know he has reflux/food intolerances.
I hope that helps!
