I have a preemie with reflux and I am at about my wits end. My other two were also preemies, but I never went thru anything like this! While she was in the hospital they never seemed concerned about her reflux. They just mentioned she had it, but never said that she had any real complications from it. Now that I have her home she has episodes where she spits up and it comes out her nose. She chokes and has problems breathing. Sometimes she turns grey and goes a little limp. I have to pat her on her back pretty hard. I am terrified!!! The dr put her on zantac and that doesn’t seem to help much at all and he didn’t reccomend putting her on an apnea monitor. I can’t lay her flat at all. We bought the crib lift/wedge for under her sheet, but that doesn’t help. The bouncy seat doesn’t help either…..she still spits up and has it come out her nose. I am making the dr see her again tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions for me when I go? Should I push for the monitor, certain tests, or different meds? I can’t even sleep out of fear that she will stop breathing. Also, are there any good products out there that really help? We are considering the fisher price newborn rock n play sleeper. Please if there is anyone out there who has a moment to help me I would appreciate it so much!

first of all:arm yourself w/ knowledge and then you must TELL your doctor what your baby needs. How are poops?is baby breastfed or formula fed? which formula?I’m asking because sometimes, along w/ the refllux, there are sensitivities to proteins- the main ones are milk and soy- and, if baby is mspi (milk soy protein intolerant), then this can exacerbate the reflux.next:find proper zantac dose. how much does baby weigh? I can help you do the math. read here to know HOW I’ll help w/ the math, lol:Zantac dosing– my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):
once you have a PROPER zantac dose, then you can research and figure out if you must TELL doctor that it is now time for a PPI (proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec, prevacid, nexium, protonix)…I have a LOT MORE to say and most of it’s here, in a link called ‘groupie intro.‘
it’s loooong but TRULY will help you.Read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You’ll find yourself coming back to it!https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853after you’ve read Groupie Intro, and you’ve researched a bit, you can come to your own conclusions about what you must insist upon for your baby…as for products? Things get better once the reflux is under control. Please read about Sandifers (links to this information is from Groupie Intro, link above) and you can always use this to TELL doctors what baby needs…People have liked the fisher price papsan (is this still around?)…it DOES get better!November 21, 2011 at 11:02 pm #69424AnonymousInactiveA couple of products I really liked for positioning was the Fisher Price Soothing Motions Glider and the Nap Nanny. Both were a godsend. you can put them both by your bed and have a nose sucker thingy close by to suction her nose and mouth when needed. I looked at a Mamroo the other day. That things has a great position!! Spendy but worth it if you ask me. I wish that had been around when Ryan was younger.
Personally I would demand a apnea monitor. I used the Angel Care monitor for my son… Not as sensitve as a certified apnea monitor but it made me feel so much better when he was in his crib.
There are no drugs to stop the reflux… just to take the acid out of it. Only time can help with keeping the stuff down into her stomach. Unfortunately for premies its takes longer. Positioning is key even during dipaer changes.
November 27, 2011 at 4:09 pm #69456AnonymousInactiveafter tons of research we finally went with the ResQ wedge. It’s crazy expensive but was totally worth it!!! It’s the type that they use in the hospitals and you can use it for sleep and tummy time.

The exact cause is unknown, but may be associated with an immature digestive system, hereditary factors, food sensitivities, and other medical issues which results in weakening of the valve between the stomach and the oesophagus.
