Ok, I think i have asked this before but can’t find it……..
Can reflux cause gas? AND/OR
Can gas cause worse reflux?
October 28, 2006 at 5:04 pm #16727AnonymousInactiveyes gas and reflux are connected and laura posted a link in one of your other posts explaining it.
October 28, 2006 at 6:32 pm #16730hellbenntKeymasterwhat’s the connection between gas and reflux?
Gas is created when something isn’t digested properly; for example,
beans are generally harder to digest than other foods, which is why
they are notorious for causing gas in most people (they are generally
not a common problem with breastfed babies through mom’s milk, though;
this is just a common example to help make sense.)Also, gas puts pressure on the esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the
top of the stomach that helps move and keep things down), making it
easier for whatever is in the stomach to be refluxed.October 28, 2006 at 7:00 pm #16731AnonymousInactiveI think gas makes EVERYTHING worse!!! Mylicon is great if you give it with every bottle(or whatever gas drops are cheapest in my case!!)
October 28, 2006 at 8:16 pm #16733AnonymousInactiveSo if gas is from something not being digested, what the heck could it be in Nutramigen? I hope someone knows!

the milk proteins?
October 28, 2006 at 9:50 pm #16738AnonymousInactiveWhat other formula could I use? Has any one had this problem with Nutramigen and had luck switching to another formula? I looked into Similac Alimentum but it looks the same as Nutramigen. I have looked (not extensively) at the Neocate and it’s only Hypoallergenic. Not sure how it’s better???
October 29, 2006 at 12:02 pm #16749AnonymousInactiveSome babies do better on one or the other of Nutramigen or Alimentum. There has been plenty of mom’s on here who tried one only to find out that the other one worked for them.
Neocate is totally different than both of them. Neocate is an amino acid based formula. It has no milk proteins or soy proteins in it.
Both Nutramigen and Alimentum have milk proteins in them but they are broken down much more than a regular formula.
Have you tried a formula without ARA/DHA? My son is 19 months old and was on Neocate until he was about 14 months old and then he went to regular formula. We had the hardest time finding a formula for him that didn’t cause major gas. I then decided to try Goodstart without ARA/DHA and it worked. I have spoke with others who had the same problem the ARA/DHA caused major gas.

like someone said, nutriamgen and alimentum are not truly hypoallergenic, Neocate is. neocate contains absolutely no milk or soy.
my son is just a gassy baby. he was gassy on eveything, and is still gassy on neocate. neocate contains long chain fatty acids which can cause gas. the neocate in combination with the PPI are in fact controlling his reflux 100%, where as the PPI alone didnt completely control the reflux pain.
nataliachick72006-10-29 15:2:58October 30, 2006 at 6:20 pm #16860AnonymousInactiveHmmm. Wonder if they could come up with a formula that is true hypo allergenic with no ARA/DHA plus whatever else babies do not do well on and add the PPI into it also. Maybe someday. Thanks everyone!
