Friday night Nathan woke at 10:30p in a pool of vomit. He puked violently about 2 more times, followed by several small pukes and then lots of retching. He had tons of gas during all this, the ended the episode with a HUGE explosive bout of diarrhea before finally falling back asleep at midnight. The next morning he vomitted a couple of times, then slept off and on until about noon. It was so freakin’ scary, but thankfully the ped has Saturday hours, so we didn’t have to take him tot he ER or any emergi clinic.
Anyway, he went 48 hours without puking, and then Monday morning vomited again (not huge, but he also hadn’t eaten too much since clearing out his system Friday night). This was maybe 2 hours after having 3oz of formula mixed w/ Pedialyte. The rest of the day he took in next to nothing, just a few oz of straight Pedialtye and some bananas and Cheerios. This morning he took 4oz of formula no problem (this is the most he normally takes 1st thing in the morning when he is healthy). About an hour later, he puked after eating 3 Cheerios. Then a few hours later, he fell and hit his head on a drawer knob in the kitchen, and cried so hard he puked AGAIN.
The ped said it could take 5-7 days for this to clear, but I’m so discouraged b/c he didn’t puke for 2 days and seemed to be getting better and now I just feel like he’s never going to be healthy again. I know that’s ridiculous, but I’m also afraid b/c so many of you all say that reflux babies take so long to shake this kind of thing.
He was never a big spitter, so all this puking is really freaking me out. I’m part venting here, and part asking for anyone to share experieces of reflux babies with stomach bugs. HELP!

He was FTT and so I’d get even more scared thinking, “He won’t ever make up for this because he already is losing weight!” It’s always hard when your baby gets sick, but with a refluxer, when you are already strug out, I think it’s doubly so. Hang in there!!!

I hope Nathan recovers soon! I know how scary it can be…. Matthew has been puking for 5 days now (no diarrhea though) and he had never projectile vomitted this way before (he vomitted a couple of times but that was it) and i freaked out when he took 3 ounces of food and then they ended up .5meters away from him!!
I hope he is taking the pedialyte… and this bug goes away soon!
February 8, 2006 at 2:27 pm #1145AnonymousInactivehey Sharon – hows the lo feeling? Have you ever tried probiotics? Acidiphilus is a probiotic that you can purchase in most major drug stores. Buy the capsule with powder in it and then sprinkle it over yogurt or put it on applesauce. Its a stomach enzyme booster that should get upset tummies back on track fast. My pedi recommended it after my dd had to be on antibiotics several times. I used it for the two times she got the stomach flu last year and it helps to make the recovery quicker. Its all natural and completely safe.

February 9, 2006 at 7:01 am #1201AnonymousInactiveWow, sounds like everyone is sick. Did I also mention that we are in the middle of a cross-country relocation, and Nathan and I are temporarily staying with my parents?? Yesterday we took him to my mom’s doctor (a GP) b/c he was SO listless. He’s dehydrated, and it’s just so hard to get him to take anything. The dr suggested sorbet b/c it has a high water content … but he hated it. He acted like I was trying to poinson him. He did seem to be feeling a little better last night, but he past few days have been such a roller coaster so I would be happy until he has a full 24 hours of improvement.
His reflux has been SOOOOO much worse the past few days, in fact his last couple of throw-ups have really been huge spit-ups triggered by a gag reflex. Yesterday morning he was feeding himself toast, andwhen I held a spoonful of Stage 1 apples to his mouth, he gagged and then threw up a ton of formula and a big wad of toast. But he just picked up another piece of toast and shoved it into his mouth without missing a beat.

February 9, 2006 at 8:51 am #1204AnonymousInactiveyep, 102 and the most yellow, watery poop i have ever seen. The reflux is projectile but doesn’t seem to bother her. Last night was horrible! Good thing you are with your parents! Hope he is feeling better today and can hold some food down. Sarah
February 9, 2006 at 9:04 am #1205AnonymousInactiveSarah – oh yeah, this water poop is just disgusting. It fills up his diaper like it’s pee. Sorry, TMI, but I just had to share.
