OK, so my family is in the middle of a cross-country relocation, and DS and I are basically living with my parents for a few weeks until we close on our new house. DH is staying in a small furnished apartment near his new work location.
Well, yesterday morning DS was playing in the babyproofed livingroom, and wandered into the dining room while I was in the kitchen but could still see him. He pulled up onto a corner table, as high as the dining room table itself, and somehow pulled one of those big candles in a glass container down, which proceeded to break and slice open 2 of his toes.
Long story short … he had some tendon damage in both toes, so he had to have surgery b/c otherwise he could have ended up with permanently numb toes that would have impeded his ability to learn to walk properly. I knew he wasn’t going to be an early walker, but now for sure, since he will have a cast up to his KNEE on for the next 3-4 weeks. We (DS, my mom and me) spent over 11 hours in the hospital yesterday. They couldn’t take him into surgery right away b/c I let him eat a bunch of crackers while we were waiting for the doctor to take a look. I never imagined he would end up in surgery, I thought he’d just get some stitches and they’d send us on our way. The good news is that since he has a mild eating aversion, he wasn’t overly upset about not being able to eat all day.
Meanwhile, DS’s 1st b’day party is tomorrow, and everyone will see him in his cast and think I am a bad mommy for letting this happen. I go back and forth between thinking it was just a freak accident and it was all my fault for not watching him closer.

though. You are a wonderful mommy and everyone will know that. And if
they don’t, shame on them! It really was just a freak accident – and
sadly, probably will be many more throughout his life. At least that’s
what I tell myself – like when Marisa fell off the bed last week…Hugs to you both. And happy birthday to Nate!

I thought I had it against the couch but somehow he got behind it, pushed it closed and smacked his head on the corner of the table (the table I bought b/c it had rounded edges), and ended up with 5 stiches over his eyebrow!!! if that weren’t enough the day after he got his stiches, his grandad took him to my sister’s high school gym to help with something after school and he fell and smacked his other eye on the bleachers so he had stiches and a black eye!!!! you should have seen the looks I got until he healed up!!! I just look back now and see those as kind of rights of passage of childhood, he’s 6 now and likes to tell the story about his “battle wound”.

February 25, 2006 at 10:13 pm #2502AnonymousInactivePoor little guy!!! Chalk it up to one of many “freak accidents”
that will happen! You’re a good mommy, those little ones are
sometimes just too quick for us! Happy birthday to Nate too!!February 25, 2006 at 11:17 pm #2507hellbenntKeymasterHappy Birthday Nate!!
Don’t beat yourself up over this!!!
February 26, 2006 at 6:13 am #2514AnonymousInactiveHappy birthday! It was just an accident… still waiting for our first one to happen… not soon i hope!
February 26, 2006 at 11:54 am #2520AnonymousInactiveHappy Birthday Nate! Accidents happen, even when you think that you’ve done everything possible to avoid them, so don’t beat yourself up over it. Before Kaelyn was even able to sit up on her own, she threw herself out of her swing while she was strapped in. A little girl that I used to babysit cut her head open on a round coffee table (the kind with no sharp edges that should be safe). The doctor said that it was just a freak accident — she fell and hit it just right and sliced her forehead open. I hope that the party goes well!
February 28, 2006 at 10:37 pm #2729AnonymousInactiveUnfortunately, every kid has to have their share of tumbles and accidents before they get big. Even the most protective moms I’ve known have had their kids have at least one major accident by the time they are grown. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad mom. You tried to take every precaution, but you can’t think of everything. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Emmy2006-2-28 22:38:36
