I almost hate to post this for fear of jinxing myself (a common fear around here, hugh?), but I so want to encourage people who have little ones with bad reflux because reading posts about babies getting better helped me tremendously when Myles was doing so poorly.
In the last few weeks Myles has been throwing up only rarely. I think only twice in three weeks. And his stomach capacity seems to be improving as well. He can take more in and keep it down. He still doesn’t want a bottle except at bedtime, but I think that’s just his personality, becasue his appetite is good and he’s eating larger portions at all of his meals. He also burps on his own more frequently, which must have something to do with improving reflux because whenever his reflux peaked he was impossible to burp. Now he seems to just burp when he needs to even without any patting.
He’s generally happy and sleeping very well.
He seems to be getting over some of his extreme separation anxiety and he is not as clingy. He’s not insisting on being carried around on mommy’s hip all day long anymore. He’s playing on the floor more and finally making some efforts to move. He’s scoots across the floor on his bottom since he still doesn’t like to be on his tummy much, but that’s a start!
Of course, I’m happy but cautiously optimistic. I’m not even thinking of reducing his meds yet and I’m a little concerned about his weight. He had his 9 month check up yesterday and he weighed in at 20lbs,4oz (45th percentile) and 29.5″ long (85th percentile). He previoulsy had been in the 70th percentile for weight. The doctor (not our regular doctor but one I trust and like) said that Myles’ rate of growth has slowed some. He said he is not concerned “yet” but that I should try to feed him more. Now I feel like I’ve been starving my poor baby! I am going to try to increase his meal size a little, but that’s hard to do when he doesn’t take a bottle and because of his prevacid schedule.
So, other than trying to increase his daily calories, I guess I’m doing right by my little boy! Thanks to all the help and advice I found here!
June 14, 2006 at 4:26 pm #9777AnonymousInactiveThat’s great news!! Don’t worry too much about the weight thing – I know, easier said than done. Seriously though, Owen was at the 99th percentile for weight for a long time and then at his 9 month appointment he was down to a little higher than 50th. They were a little worried because it was a bit of a drop for him, but he has since continued at 50th consistently and all of his doctors think that’s just where he’s supposed to be. They told me that it’s normal for them to start out kind of high and then balance out around the 9 month mark.
Congrats anyway – that’s a great start!
June 14, 2006 at 4:26 pm #9778AnonymousInactiveThat’s GREAT Christine – I’m so happy to hear it and not only do I have
my fingers and toes crossed for you but I’m doing an “anti-jinx” dance
as well. Can he eat fattening foods like avocado? Can he try meats soon?June 14, 2006 at 5:31 pm #9785AnonymousInactiveI am so happy to hear that things are going so well for you and Myles I hope it keeps getting better and better.
June 14, 2006 at 9:22 pm #9807AnonymousInactiveThat’s great news Christine!!! I’m so glad to hear that Myles is doing so well. As for the moving around on his bum, Hailey started doing that around 8 months. She kept doing it until she started crawling at 11 months. Our doc said that some babies really like to bum shuffle if they’re not tummy kids… I always thought it was so funny and cute to watch. Good news!
June 14, 2006 at 9:50 pm #9811AnonymousInactiveYeaaaaaa! for you and for little Myles too!!!!! It is great inspiration for others on the board, especially our newest members, to hear that it DOES get better – some sooner, some later – but it does!!
CELEBRATE even the smallest milestones and give him a hug!!

June 14, 2006 at 10:32 pm #9816AnonymousInactiveThanks everybody. Wouldn’t you know, he threw up his bedtime bottle tonight. I felt like crying but I’m still optimistic because three weeks is the longest he has ever gone without throwing up and he is eating so well. Hopefully it’s just a fluke. I did give him Motrin for teething this afternoon, and bananas which he hasn’t had in weeks, so maybe it was one of those “new” things which triggered it.
Thanks, Laura… Maybe Myles will settle in the 50th percentile range like Owen did. The doctor wasn’t very concerned, so I guess I shouldn’t be either. It’s good to know that other babies have dropped in their weight percentile and been o.k. So, thanks for sharing that.
Karen…thanks for the anti-jinx dance!!! I guess it didn’t work, but thanks for trying! As for the avocado…I forget to buy one everytime I go grocery shopping! Thanks for the reminder. I would like to try it and see if he likes it. It would be a good source of fat and calories for him. I haven’t tried any meats. I never gave them to my girls as babies. The jarred stuff looks so gross and we’re not big meat eaters around here anyway.
Lori, yes the bum shuffle is so cute! I do hope he crawls eventually like Hailey did. His doctor said that crawling is actually very important for developing coordination; something I didn’t know. Good luck with Hailey’s test tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes.
Thanks Katie and Robin
June 15, 2006 at 8:16 am #9827AnonymousInactiveWas the Motrin on an empty tummy? I can only give Motrin if she’s just
had a big bottle or meal – otherwise it definitely bothers her stomach.I agree with the jarred meat looking gross – although M LOVES the
jarred sweet potato chicken. I do have some really easy meat and
chicken recipes though if you’re interested.Hope Myles has a good day.
June 15, 2006 at 9:49 am #9829AnonymousInactiveHi Karen,
I gave it to him after his meal, and he’s had it before without any problems. So, maybe it was the bananas. Or maybe just a fluke. He’s fine so far today. Kept his breakfast down. A little irritable from that tooth cutting through, but that’s to be expected.
I’d love the recipes. I’m not very creative in the kitchen. My kids really need some “new” menu items! Do you want to post them here or email them? Here’s my email if you want to do it that way. [email protected] Thank you!
I hope Marisa has a good day, too!
June 15, 2006 at 10:25 am #9830AnonymousInactiveMy favorite one is from Wholesome Baby Food’s site – follow this link
to see J&J’s baby meatballs – you can make them with ground beef,
turkey or chicken. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/Meals.htmAlso more meat recipes here:
http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/MeatRecipes.htm
And Annabel Karmel has some good ones in her books. I want to try her
Baby Bolognese soon – I’ll email that one to you when I get some time
later today.June 15, 2006 at 12:51 pm #9834AnonymousInactiveThanks Karen.
I used to make meatballs out of ground turkey. My Eliana loves meatballs, any kind! I haven’t made them in a long time – Myles has been so been so much work, I’ve pretty much abandoned the idea of any real cooking. Now that he’s doing better I want to get back in the kitchen and make some real food for my little ones, so thanks for the links!

June 16, 2006 at 8:29 am #9882AnonymousInactiveChristine,
That’s wonderful that Myles is doing so much better! I hope things continue to improve for you guys. My first DD (no reflux) hated tummy time and was a butt scoocher. She never crawled. From what I’ve read crawling isn’t even considered a milestone… all that matters is that they are mobile, in whatever way suits them. My DD went straight from butt scooching to cruising around the furniture. It was fine with me because the butt scooch is much slower than a crawl so I could pop into another room to get something and I didn’t have to worry about her being on the other side of the room when I got back. LOL!

June 16, 2006 at 9:39 am #9884AnonymousInactiveThanks Karen,
Myles is doing well these last two days. So, hopefully that one throw up was a fluke and he truly is turning the corner with his reflux. He’s moving more and more but still gets MAD whe he’s on his tummy. Our doctor said he thinks crawling IS very important, so I’m anxious to see him crawl, but I also know that there are babies who don’t crawl and are just fine. And I agree, the butt scooch is much slower, so you have a short time before they get into trouble!
