Well, I’ve given it enough of a trial before finally coming to
the community. Jaylen has been on BufferBabies (using Prilosec OTC) for a 2 full weeks. While
the changes to her have been OUTSTANDING, it hasn’t come easy. My
first shipment arrived and everything looked great. The instructions,
while daunting, were easy to follow. I used it with the Prilosec OTC
(brand name) and it cost about $25 for a box of 42 tablets. I had to
use 17 tablets per bottle, which calculates out to be about $10/bottle
(for the meds). Adding in the cost of the BufferBabies themselves,
which is $13.50 per refill kit, makes it about $25 bucks (plus
shipping) for one “use” of the system. That would be wonderful if I
could get more than a week’s use out of one refill. Has anybody that’s
using BB gotten more than a week? Currently, Jaylen gets 5ml 3x day.
I can’t believe she’s already gone thru an entire refill and it hasn’t
even been a week yet. Also, we had major functionality problems with the whole system
to begin with. My first bottle didn’t work. It kept getting clogged,
wouldn’t pump evenly, and I eventually ended up going thru an entire
Side A refill (fortunately it wasn’t the meds side). The BufferBabies
folks were awesome, and sent me a replacement top to the bottle, but
that still ended up not being the problem as it didn’t fix my pumping
issue. Eventually they sent me a completely new bottle, which at first
seemed to be working, but I can’t imagine it’s working right if I just
went thru a whole bottle in less than 4 days??? Also, since I went
thru one whole packet of the refill with that first bottle that didn’t
work, BufferBabies (again, awesome) sent me another packet. This time,
however, the packet that arrived must have not been taped down
correctly and some spilled (how much, I’m not sure) because the inside
of the box was covered in powder. So again, they sent me another
packet, but I believe I indicated the wrong refill side and received
the wrong packet (I needed Side A but may have called it Side B so got
a Side B). So now I’m again back to having no more meds for Jaylen
until I get a check in the mail and order some refills. I may mix up
the BB according to directions but use some separate bottles to hold
the meds so that I can control the output of the mixtures more. I
found if I pour half and half I can make sure I’m getting the right
mixture. Being able to dose regardless of mealtimes has been great,
but what also has been a miracle is it seems that the switch from
Prevacid to Prilosec OTC has made all the difference in the world for
Jaylen. She sleeps SO much better now (thru the night most every
night, 1-2 hour naps a couple times a day) and is generally so much
happier the rest of the time. I just wish it wasn’t so hard to get the
meds in her. 🙁February 8, 2009 at 7:47 pm #60891hellbenntKeymasterI’m so sorry to read about your difficulties!
I would copy and paste you post and email the bufferbabies perople & let them know…I used it when it was caracream- two bottles of stuff & no pump…February 8, 2009 at 8:25 pm #60895AnonymousInactiveDon’t get me wrong, so far the good outweighs the bad (because I don’t care WHAT made my little angel happy & healthy), so getting her in better shape holds much more weight than all the negative aspects of it. I just wish I could get everything to line up so that it made getting her happy much easier!!
I feel so bad because I’ve bugged them so much already! LOL! And they’ve been so helpful so far, I don’t want them to think I’m trying to take advantage of them. I will email David in the morning.
I do feel like a total ass — I just figured out why my most recent refill has only lasted 4 days — when I made it the last time, I only put 40cc of water in it when it calls for 80cc (the directions tell you to put in 1 shot and then a 2nd shot, so I just forgot the last half of the amt of water). DOH! So that part was my fault. I hope I didn’t hurt her by giving her an incorrectly mixed dose. I’ll ask them about that tomorrow too. But the rest of the problems are still there.

My meds last 2 weeks per batch since my ped will only give 20 mg per day even though Marcikids suggests 30 per day. Every time I get the refill at the pharmacy, I have an argument with the pharmacist about dose. Argh!
February 9, 2009 at 4:52 pm #60907AnonymousInactiveHas anyone else preferred prilosec to prevacid? We just switched to prevacid from prilosec because of the compounding issues at the pharmacy, and went through the whole drug transition thing again and now I am sort of wishing we had just asked for prilosec tablets so we could use them in buffer babies. The prevacid seems to be affecting his mood or causing side effects that hurt him in some way because he has never cried like he does now.
