Isabelle- I think it might help us to help you if we had some more answers about your situation. How did you get the reflux diagnosis? Has she always vomited? Is she gaining weight okay? Do you feed her small quantities because they told you to do that, or is she just difficult to feed because of being irritable?
I think we can really help if you give us a little more info…although I know it’s hard to find the time to write! I hope all is getting better…
March 30, 2007 at 6:39 am #28995AnonymousInactiveHi Isabelle and welcome. This has been a great site for me…I can remember coming here feeling just like you and now I feel like I have at least some control over the situation.
Its great that she is vomiting less on the Zantac. I certainly found initially Zantac helped Alana…not so much with vomitting but with pain. Over time it helped less and we had to change meds but while it worked it gave me some breathing space to find this site and get some new ideas about how I could help her.
I was just wondering how much was small and what happens when you feed her a larger quantity? Is she on solids yet and does she vomit up those?
Hope to hear from you soon.

I’m fairly new here as well, even though this is my second reflux baby. I was much in the same boat as you with my first child. It took forever to really diagnose him with anything, and even then it was only because I did a lot of research about his symptoms and told his ped that I thought he had reflux and MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance). By the time we figured out what we were dealing with, he was beginning to outgrow it.
I agree with what some of the other ladies have said about the small and frequent feedings possibly indicating pain or discomfort. That is what my daughter has been doing. When her reflux was quite bad, she could only eat about 1-2 ounces, and then fuss terribly and not eat anymore. But then she would be hungry again in an hour or so. It got to be that my whole day was spent feeding her, or so it seemed. Does Alexa seem to be making any funny movements after or during her feeds, such as arching her back, stiffening up, drawing her knees up, turning her head to one side, etc.? And how does she sleep? As some of the other moms have mentioned, many of our little refluxers also have MSPI, so that is something to look in to as a possible contributer to her symptoms as well. What is she eating for milk/formula and is she on solids? Does she get rashes or eczema? What are her bowel movements like? I know, we are all asking so many questions, but hopefully you will be able to get some answers from all the wonderful parents here who have gone through the same thing.
Also, I see you are in Canada as well. Whereabouts? I am in Brandon, Manitoba.
Take care, and we hope to hear more about how Alexa is doing.
April 1, 2007 at 12:26 pm #29197AnonymousInactiveHello everyone !
Thank you for all of your comments and suggestions.
I’m sorry I have not been able to write more often. I feel like I am spending my whole day feeding Alexa.
So, to answer some of your questions, Alexa is now 10 months old, she weighs 16 pounds, she was diagnosed with reflux after a baryum test, she is taking liquid Zantac and Motilium (domperidone), she is still vomitting. She vomits about once or twice a day. But then again, sometimes she can go 4 days without vomit.
We have put her throught allergy tests. She is not allergic to milk, soya, eggs on anything like that.
She does eat solids. She drinks 500ml of Similac a day. She eats about 3 table spoons of rice baby cereal a day. She has one 59 ml portion of meat at lunch plus some veggies and for supper she has a bit more cereal. I’ve found that giving her meat for supper makes her unconforable.
As far as her sleeping habbits, she sleeps pretty well. She’s not cranky at all. She does turn her head to one side when I feed her. I wonder if that means that she is in pain or that she is just full.
I have chosen to feed her many times a day so that if she does throw up, at least, she will throw up only a small quantity.
One of the things that worry me is that twice in the past 2 weeks, she has woken up spitting up, having difficulty breathing. I will mention it to my doctor this coming friday.
As far as rashes, she use to get a bit of eczema, but it is gone now.
Her bowel movements are ok, about one or twice a day, kind of smooth.
And, to answer your question Sheri, I do live in Montreal, Quebec, I’m a french Canadian.
Nice to meet all of you ! Please send me more info. I could sure use the support right now.

I’m in Toronto, but originally from Montreal! Nice to see another Canadian around here…
Sounds like Alexa is doing well on her current regimen given that she eats, isn’t in pain, and is happy and sleeps. I personally would just keep doing what you’re doing, but would mention the vomitting at night to your ped if you’re worried.
About the head turning while feeding- my non-refluxer used to do this at the end of the feed to indicate that she was done (she would turn away from the bottle). It was very different from what Hailey did, which was more of a tilting of her head, while simultaneously fussing, arching her neck and back, and stiffening her legs.

April 1, 2007 at 6:32 pm #29235AnonymousInactiveHello ! It’s me again !
It’s very nice to meet you all Canadians and Americans Moms ! (sorry about the spelling mistakes, in my defense, I am french… hi, hi, hi)
Oh well, on a more serious subject, I value your comments.
To s&h mum, thank you for sharing your opinion about the way Alexa is fed. I’m happy to see that you agree. I also want to mention that Alexa has Similac milk, meat, baby cereal, fruits and veggies everyday. She has a pretty balanced diet. She does not seem to be in pain when I feed her. She does turn red when she throws up. She does turn her head the other way when she’s not ungry anymore. (at least that’s what I think it means)
As far as the testing for allergies, Alexa had it done a few days ago. They poked her with milk protein, soy, eggs, barley and at least 5 other allergens. They poked her with a small needle and she did not react to anything. Therefore, they concluded that she was not allergic.
On another subject, in your experience, at what age does a baby usually grows out of acid reflux ? I’m REALLY anxious to know. I’m counting the days until my daughter grows out of it.
Thanks for your help again. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Isabelle
