Is mucus in the stool always a sign of a food allergy? I changed Dagney’s diaper after dinner, and there was visible mucus in it. I have no idea what it could be from, she hasn’t had anything new for a very long time, and we just stopped the Axid yesterday, but I didn’t think the Axid would have an affect like this. She doesn’t seem to have any refluxy-type symptoms, but her bottom is red as a strawberry, and it’s definitely bothering her today. If she has mucus today, and it was caused by an allergen, when would that have been ingested? Today or even a few days ago? I thought we’d gotten past all this mucus!!
We’re going to the allergist on August 1st, but i guess we’ll call the pediatrician tomorrow, or maybe the GI…Thanks in advance!dfb05 2008-07-13 19:55:53 July 13, 2008 at 8:05 pm #53837hellbenntKeymasterI think mucous from time to time is ‘normal’
so it might not mean it’s something she ate?however, this is different for someone like you (meaning a mama of a mspi baby), used to analyzing poop, LOL!!so maybe just take a wait-and-see approach? (easy for me to say)Has she eaten a lot of sugar in one sitting? jonah used to get bad rashes on the rare occasion he ate anything sugary (even too much watermelon or grapes or cake, etc)July 13, 2008 at 8:14 pm #53839AnonymousInactiveThanks, Laura! I’ve saved more poopie diapers for later analyzation than I’d like to admit to!!
She doesn’t really eat too many sugary things, and hasn’t eaten fruit in at least 1 1/ weeks (not by my choice or without my trying to get it in her!) She’s been getting diaper rashes a lot lately for seemingly no reason, I’ve been secretly blaming it on my MIL not changing her frequently enough, but maybe not…I guess we’ll wait and see. I have this diaper in a baggie on the chair in my bathroom, in case we make another trip into the doc tomorrow!July 13, 2008 at 8:21 pm #53841hellbenntKeymasterany chance the aforementioned MIL is giving her no-no foods?
July 13, 2008 at 8:27 pm #53842AnonymousInactiveAnother thing is teething. Cooper has only had one diaper rash (thank goodness) in his entire life and it what when he cut his first tooth. It was horrible and took forever to clear up. But it went hand in hand with the first tooth. So maybe teething and the extra saliva and mucous could be causing the rash. We love Boudreaxs and we also have this stuff called Calmoseptine. We got it from a wound care nurse at the hospital we work in but I bet you could find it somewhere. It has calamine and methol in it and it works wonders. Good Luck. I would just see if it keeps happening. Cooper will have a “bit” of mucous every now and then I just make sure it isn’t 2-3 poops in a row.
July 13, 2008 at 8:36 pm #53844AnonymousInactiveWell, there really aren’t any “no no” foods right now except striaght milk, cheese, or ice cream, and I don’t think she’s given her any of those (but, yes, again, i suspected that in the past she or my fil would slip no-no’s in before!). She’s been on hidden dairy for a long time. It could be teething, we’ve been waiting for the molars to come in for some time now, haven’t really seen anything popping out yet, but it could be contributing…
July 13, 2008 at 9:19 pm #53847AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to add that some peds like you to put the diaper in the fridge. They can’t do any testing on a diaper that has been left out at room temp. It grows things…..so it throws the test resluts off. Just thought I’d add that…LOL
July 14, 2008 at 9:31 pm #53944AnonymousInactiveThanks, Jessica, isn’t it just great the things you learn as a parent? Had I known 2 years ago I’d be analyzing and potentially refridgerating poop…
Her diapers seemed normal today, so we’ll see how tomorrow goes. I guess it could have just been an off-day for her or just tummy troubles. -
