grace had a small constipated bowel movement tonight. then what looked like stringy stuff in the diaper. i couldn’t tell b/c her poop is a really dark color from the neocate. she is always constipated. she has been on the neocate for a week now. do you think this is mucus??? her exczema has gotten worse on her face. it’s not so much bright red it’s just very rough, slightly red and very dry around her cheeks ears what do yall think
October 19, 2006 at 11:58 pm #16169AnonymousInactivehmmm. neocate is hypoallergenic with no milk or soy. but that does sound like mucous. maybe she is still cleaning out her system from the previous formulas?
October 20, 2006 at 8:29 am #16174AnonymousInactiveMatthew had mucous and no allergies – just sometimes. BOth ped and GI said that mucous CAn be a sign of allergies and intolerances but is no proof of it…. Matthew had a ton of mucous on the Neocate and then his biospies came back clear and he did OK on it
October 20, 2006 at 9:14 am #16179AnonymousInactiveDo you think she could be allergic to corn? Isn’t there still corn syrup in Neocate? Just an idea.
October 20, 2006 at 10:32 am #16193AnonymousInactivei was told the corn syrup in neocate was cleared of all allergens. its not actual corn, so it should be okay.
October 20, 2006 at 11:02 am #16196AnonymousInactiveI would not give up yet on the Neocate – try for a while and then there is always Elecare…. some mommies have had more luck with Elecare, others with Neocate.
While a reaction to Neocate can happen, it is extremely rare – hang in there… hopefully you will see an improvement soon
October 20, 2006 at 12:49 pm #16205AnonymousInactiveThe Neocate does take a while to kick in, from what I understand. If the mucus keeps appearing, then maybe mention it to the doc.
I think mucus is a pretty common thing around here In our case it takes a lot of it for me to worry about it.
The exczema does sound like an allergy though. or does it run in your family? Keep in mind about the Neocate taking a while to work.
There’s a link about that somewhere. HMMM. Laura would know.
October 20, 2006 at 1:19 pm #16213AnonymousInactiveAll three of mine had eczema, two of them (Eliana and Myles) had very severe eczema on their faces which started at about 4 weeks of age and became worse until I brought them in at 6 weeks. Back then you could get an eczema drug for them, but it is no longer approved for infants under age 2.
If it gets very severe, they can treat it with cortizone ointment, so if you’re worried you may want to call her doctor and ask about it. We were told to use Cortizone 1% Ointment (not lotion); a very thin layer, twice daily for no more than two weeks. It usually cleared things up in just a few days for us. Of course, ask her doctor first.
October 20, 2006 at 2:20 pm #16228AnonymousInactiveTaylor is allergic to corn syrup that is why she was not able to tolerate the neocate and most other formulas since they usually have milk, corn starch, or corn syrup in it. They say most children whom are allergic to corn are not allergic to corn syrup but it is getting more common. Our GI have noticed more cases of children not able to tolerate the Neocate and Elecare due to the corn syrup. We know about the corn syrup for sure since we did have her allergy tested specifically for corn, and corn syrup. She started to develop bad excema to her ears and her BM issues became worse, very mucousy and she had even a harder time trying to pass them not because they were hard she couldn’t seem to process the long chain fats untop of the corn syrup allergy.
October 20, 2006 at 2:22 pm #16230AnonymousInactivehere is the link about neocate:

October 21, 2006 at 2:14 pm #16300AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t panic yet. I know that I’ve read of at least 2 or 3 people whose children took almost a month to clear all of the “old” allergens out of their system when they went on neocate.
